Hoops Hello: 2021 3* PF Wil Tschetter

Submitted by MGoChippewa on July 6th, 2020 at 7:45 AM

Juwan Howard added his second commitment in what should be a large 2021 class. Tschetter is the 149th ranked prospect according to the 247 composite. His ranking has been hurt by the lack of a recruiting evaluation period this summer, as he's only been a "national recruit" for a short period of time.

Building a good base for this class. Two quality, 3-4 year players. Probably take a couple more like this and hopefully top it off with a few one or two and done types.

Depending how his body develops and how he adapts to college ball, he could either be a poor man's Moe Wagner or a poor man's D.J. Wilson. He looks to be about 6'7" or 6'8" and shoots the ball well at the 3 point line. He likes slashing to the hoop and dunking hard, but he's going against a bunch of 5'11" munchkins in small town Minnesota.

He also shows some nice post moves and passing on his highlights. He has high upside as an offensive player, but probably not the frame to be an amazing defender. To me, he has the kind of athleticism that Stauskas had, in the sense that when he's on the attack he looks like a good athlete, but reacting probably isn't his strong suit. His highest upside is probably at the 5, but it will depend on whether he is big enough and can hold up in defensive situations.

If we're looking for a Michigan comparison, I think it's DeShawn Sims.  Not an elite athlete, but a good one.  Shoots the ball well and has a good array of post moves.  Sims played more 5 than you would have wanted to because of roster deficiencies at the time, but Tschetter should be a 4 throughout his career unless he gets taller.

I think there's some similarity in their size and game but Sims was a top-30 recruit and Tschetter is around 140 (though rising fast).  I think Sims was a much better athlete overall but Tschetter looks like a plus-shooter (something we need).

I tried to think of some other comparisons over on UMHoops in the comments.  Initially I offered up Evan Smotrycz, but Dylan shot that down because Tschetter is a legit D-1 Tight End who is comfortable mixing it up and Smotrycz really only wanted to shoot corner threes.  I don't like Bielfeldt (less offense, mobility), Donnal (less toughness & shooting), etc.  I think his role will be a lot like Brandon Johns initially.  Johns has the athleticism to defend 4s and 5s while Tschetter has to prove if he can defend either - but Tschetter walks on campus as a high-volume 45% shooter from three.  (One deep-cut comparison is Chris Young, who was an undersized 4-year center for Michigan that was also known for being a hard-working guy who did the little things and played in a ton of games for us.)

What he really reminds me of is one of those guys that Iowa or Wisconsin brings off the bench as their 6th man who can play the 4 or 5 and before you know it he has dropped 8 points in 10 minutes on you.

Great pickup! 2 of ~5 slots taken. So what's the board look like now? I see it something like this:

PG:

  • Top priority: Jaden Akins/Angelo Brizzi

SG:

  • Top priority: Jalen Warley/Trevor Keels/Matthew Cleveland
  • Other targets: Kobe Bufkin

SF:

  • Commit: Isaiah Barnes
  • Other targets: Harrison Ingram

PF:

  • Commit: Will Tschetter

C:

  • Top priority: Charles Bediako/Chet Holmgren/Efron Reid

I'm not sure which of the center prospects is realistic at this point, but a class of Brizzi, Warley, Barnes, Tschetter, and one of those would be outstanding

I think the key to this class is which 2-3 players we sign at the PG/SG positions.  I like Barnes and Tschetter as multi-year program guys, joining Zeb and Williams in that regard.  Dickinson has a chance to be a star even if we don't get one of those big-name centers.  But what we really need is some star offensive players with the ball in their hands.

I like the pickup but I wouldn’t expect him to rise much in the rankings after becoming a more national name, at least on 247. Brian Snow kinda shit on him and doesn’t even agree with his current ranking.
