Hollis cancels upcoming selection committee road trip, returns to MSU

Submitted by LS And Play on

You would have to think more information will be coming out regarding last week's allegations.

Tourney sel. chair Mark Hollis has canceled his 2-week CBB road trip due to obligations as Michigan St. AD that require him to be on campus.

It's like the MSU beat is pretending none of this stuff exists. The posts in relation to most of this gets deleted over at RCMB. The suspension news was literally broke by some random message board poster before any journalist had it. The Only Colors has barely mentioned it. Literally it's this type of behavior that leads to Baylor situations. Cover up everything, no transperancy, no consistent communication. Hopefully it burns MSU's program to the ground.

Some of what you write above is correct but a lot is not correct:

- There is a lot of chatter on RCMB and a 30 page thread dedicated to this

- Hondo Carpenter has been all over it

- One of their guys did a whole podcast on the topic and used alarming language

And I disagree on wanting the MSU program burned to the ground.  I want UM to pound them every year on the field but I don't think another major program in the Big 10 burning is good for anyone.  Especially to players on the team that had nothing to do with this.

Sparty's football team's time has come and gone. M, OSU and PSU are all at the top of the rankings and Maryland is emerging. Durkin is in a great spot. MD turns out decent talent and there is no in-state school competing for them. DC also turns out great talent with no local school competing for it. Then there's PA and VA right next door where there's a ton of talent. That's too many teams at the top of the division for MSU to remain a highly ranked team.

I have been through this process many, many times.

Feels like a very big something to me, with some potential serious criminal consequences.  We are going to find out soon, but Hollis canceling the trip fits in with the pattern so far.

Only people really in the know are probably attorneys for alleged victims, the investigators, select university officials to some degree, and the alleged victims and targets of the investigations themselves, both of whom I am sure have been advised not to discuss it in any way.

Could the silence be the result of, say, a federal crime where it has to do with crossing state lines and being federal.... or....  as not to spoil the jury pool for the upcoming trial?  Im talking out of my arse here, but trying to say that maybe its so serious and thus, some sort of forced silence.

Tip of the proverbial iceberg.

Most reasonable fans thought Spartan football was not going anywhere.  Looks now they are going the way of the Titanic for a while.

It happened so fast it's shocking.

ijohnb

of the iceberg into what, though?.  Widespread institutional sexual abuse?  A generalized lack of institutional control involving athlete behavior, PEDs, etc.?  I tend to agree with you that this is the tip of something, it is just odd that there are so few details or even informed speculation as to what it might be.

ijohnb

February 13th, 2017 at 12:57 PM ^

course I agree with that.  Any of this stuff is too much, but you would think with that investigation still on-going, that they would come out and say this has nothing to do with that if they were unrelated.  I guess if I was an MSU fan, at this point I would be terrified that no details have come out yet.  It may be because of privacy of victims, and if it is that, to this large of an extent, Michigan State athletics may be in a world of hurt.

The data points cited in the case by the media and I would say "yes" to all the above. The Nasser case has to rip apart the AD - not just his actions, but all the MSU staff that supposedly knew and even counseled girls/women to not report it. Criminal sexual complaints occurred years ago. The VP of Student Affairs supposedly overturned with vague rationale a handful of students expulsions/suspensions on sexual assault. Title IX investigators now on campus. Independent law firm review. FOIAs discover Cooper's arrest (never suspended and maybe not punished). Previous Title IX review found serious flaws. 3 football players and a staff are suspended weeks after a complaint was filed. MSU gymnastics coach suspended. This situation could easily be "worse" for MSU than Sandusky for PSU (in no way am I comparing the victims' suffering either way) because the system might have enabled Nasser to hurt more people, lack of enforcement in other cases, and Title IX violations. I just don't see an escape route for MSU.

Attorney for one of the alleged victims in the latest sexual assault incident(s) said Friday that arrests are expected this week.

Public does not know at this time even what the allegations are, but as others here have concluded, university officials are justifiably on high alert after Dr. Nassar proceedings. Stuff that may have been swept under the rug in the past will be taken very seriously, perhaps to the point of prosecutorial overcompensation.

As you know, once the microscope is on, more things tend to arise.

Spartan community has been vaguely warned to brace itself.  We'll see.

Needless to say, the optics of going to the selection committee meeting while your football program is showing signs of self-immolation is a bad look.  It's an even worse look when there's a ton of allegations that your Women's Gymnastics doctor is a long-term sexual predator.

That at least partially explains the decision.  Hollis needs to both concentrate on the home front and appear to be concentrating on the home front.

I hate to see this happen. I'm not a Sparty fan, and was thoroughly pissed by the Assholes that gave me crap during the Rod/Hoke years. But this is a train wreck; and its a train wreck with innocent victims.

I've really disliked Dantonio; and all that 'chip' bull$hit. But I always hoped and thought he was a decent guy who kept tight control of his program.

This is A) Bad for the innocent victims and B) bad for college football. This sucks all the way around.

don't even think we can say that at this point.  I don't think we can say anything, really, except that a couple of players are suspended and a coach was taken into custody.  It could be as simple as an isolated incident wherein one of the coaches found out about something and did not report it.  It may have nothing to do with Dantonio and nothing to do with Nasser, et. al.

I am reading too much into things to determine culpability yet; but from what I've heard there was a sexual assault that took place, and that really bums me out.

And the Gymnastics Doctor thing is a complete f*cking nightmare.

I hope they are not true or at least highly exaggerated but it doesn't sound like a minor incident.  I can post links to the rumored information if the Board thinks I should, but otherwise I will keep it off this board.

You guys are right.  Let's not add any fuel to the fire.  There was an MSU podcast that covers the public information if anyone wants to look it up for themselves.

I think there's been enough conflicting information on player names that they aren't effectively out there.  You could probably give a rough outline of the rumors regarding allegations, absent any names, without feeling that you've potentially tarnished anyone's name.

I for one would like to know what the hell the story is without having to wade through the internet.  Completely understand if you don't want to be the one to post it, however.

I am trying my best not to go over a line here but mods please delete if you think this is inappropriate...

Podcast summary:

- Alleged attack is "heinous"

- If true, this is a "game-changer for MSU"

- Anyone with a daughter is going to be enraged when they hear this

The host of the podcast is a Sparty and sounded truly upset and frazzled when he was speaking.

If this is even close to the truth, there should be no joy or laughter on this board or anywhere else.

Suspensions can mean anything.

And I am skeptical of the "taken into custody" rumor.  If and when somebody is arrested and taken into custody, you're going to hear about it, and be able to verify it.

If it is coach Curtis Blackwell then his 06-2016 tweet shade on us "Those who have stayed are already champions". Makes me wonder champions of what? All kidding aside, i truly hope the victims are getting all the support they need and will not be trashed by the media.

The mouth breathers that committed the alleged act were not intelligent enough to don their knit headgear as pictured above. What a sad state of affairs. I wonder if any of those ugly license plates will find some white tape over the logo until renewal time...

I don't mean to make light of the situation, especially if this involves something truly serious. But hard to believe that only a year ago, that program was almost on top of the world. Sure, they got their asses kicked by Alabama, but they were playoff contenders, Big Ten champions, beaten us 7 of 9 times, beaten arguably the greatest OSU team ever assembled, on the road, with a backup QB. All with a bunch of 2-3 star nobodies.

Now they're a 3-9 laughingstock, recruiting has plummeted, a coach got arrested, players are getting suspended. Something appears to be coming to a head in the next few days to a week, and I'm guessing we're not going to like what we see.

So I took a quick peak over at RCMB.  A poster there itemized some of stuff they've had to deal with in just the last year or so: A softball player accused a coach of having pitchers throw at her as retaliation for having reported something; this investigation of three football players and a staffer for some potentially serious wrongdoing; the gymnastics team doctor who is apparently evil incarnate; and the band director who made inappropriate advances to at least one student.  Holy crap.  Having to deal with just poor on-field performance would be a welcome luxury right now.  3-9 is the least of their worries to say the least.

Although I can understand why someone would spit on a meter maid given some of the experiences that I have had with them.

Best story re: meter maid was in Ann Arbor.  I was paying my rent to the property manager - they had a collection box on the front door of their office on the 1st day of every  month.  The driveway was short so when you parked your car, the back end was in the sidewalk.

So I drop off my check and turn around (could not have been more than 25 seconds) and there is a parking ticket on my windshield.  I looked around - nobody was around.  Same thing happened to my roomate and one of our neighbors.  The lady was literally hiding behind some bushes knowing that everybody would be dropping off their checks that day.  She must have gotten 50 cars that day.

I probably would have spitten on her had I seen her do it.

Don't forget Cooper who just in the last week was charged with spitting on a parking officer. The band one was weird. It didn't sound that bad if you read the story. The band leader is an old dude and asked one of his students to send him a picture of herself in the dress she wore to some concert. Discreetly. Then send a followup text apology for being a creepy stalker. Sure it is weird but I don't think that ranks real high on the worrisome scale. Aren't all band people weirdos?

how is it that they are keeping all of this crap under wraps for so long. I know minors are involved but MSU always seems to find a way to hid their atrocities for a long time. Reminds me more of PSU and Baylor than anything else.  The top of an iceberg and nothing passing the cone of silence until the whol thing comes crumbling down.
