Holiday Friday What's In Your Cup/On Your BBQ/Plans Thread

Submitted by xtramelanin on September 4th, 2020 at 6:55 PM

Mates,

End of summer Labor Day Weekend thread.  We have slight normalcy leaking back into our lives with some college football being played this weekend and also the genuine hope that in 2 weeks we'll be watching real live high school football in various places in Michigan.  Oh the heart jumps in anticipation.

Earlier, a number of you laid out your plans for the weekend.  I have it on good authority that mgoblogger Scanner Blue will be visiting the farm tomorrow for a bike ride and run, joining the 'Daddy-daughter duathlons' that me and one or both daughters have been doing 2-3x/wk for the last 6 months or so. Trying to entice robf to join us as he hinted at a possible trip up north.  For those that visit, bring a cooler so we can send you down the road with some farm goods - beef, eggs, and maybe we'll go berry picking at the north end of the farm.

You've got CFB tomorrow starting at 1:00.  Of particular interest is a game at 1:30 where two of last year's opponents, Memphis State and Army square off.  Holding out hope for Mr. Yacht to pull a rabbit out of a hat and actually tilt us toward B10 football.

So what's in your cup, what's on your grill, what's on tap for you this holiday weekend?

'no trigger' can't be true.  you took the time to crap post in a thread that is devoid of politics or controversy.  what 'slog' is there here?  and if it's so difficult, go on to another thread.

kids in general and kids athletics have been severely affected by covid.  its natural to have that as part of many of the discussions.  do you have any, and if so, what age(s)?

No trigger is absolutely true, are you that full of yourself to think that a logical person cannot think that you suck?

I absolutely did not crap post. I said that you personally are boring and that other people are more entertaining.  Is that so hard to believe? If so, you are the definition of a psychopath., congrats.

Dont preach to me about kids and athletics. I coach a spring sport that was cancelled last year. I have seen kids cry about the loss of a season. Have you? I bet not! Because your season has not been cancelled. It has just been pushed into mine!

you certainly can think i'm not that great of a guy.  heck, you'll have a lot of company.  but the issue is that you would bother to mention that in such an innocuous thread and completely without provocation.  i'm sorry that it eats at you so deeply.  triggered, i guess.

and fwiw, our season didn't get pushed to the spring since the warden changed her mind yesterday and let the inmates play this fall.  lots of smiles, but nobody shed tears here prior to that, a little stronger fabric than that around here.

triggered is you.  see definition:

Triggered

An emotional/psychological reaction caused by something that somehow relates to an upsetting time or happening in someone's life. This reaction is often found to happen in war veterans, people suffering with PTSD, depression, and other mental disorders.

"Jim gets easily triggered."

you are the 'jim' in that definition.  and the mild mention of the warden a few minutes ago wasn't what triggered you a half hour ago.

this is a place where you can build some genuine friendships.  two of my favorite mgobloggers will be visiting the farm tomorrow.  maybe if you were up north sometime you'd stop by and find out that i'm not the worst guy in the world.  who knows, you might actually enjoy meeting me and my family.

I hate to tell you, but i have no ptsd. You are far more likely then I to have taken too many blows to the head.

Quit drinking and goto bed.

I do not want to goto your farm. If i have not made this clear enough,  i find you creepy. I am not your "jim." I just find you creepy.

Stop inviting me to your secluded land.

I'm sitting on my deck on this beautiful evening, enjoying bourbon in my glass and PREPPING FOR OUR WEEK 1 OPPONENT. Can't believe the whirlwind that went on the past two days, but so excited for my players and athletes all across the state.

I'll be working a couple hours overtime in the morning, but then the kids and I will be making a stop at Westborn Market in Dearborn for a few things for dinners this weekend. As for the rest, we're doing a little grilling and a lot of sitting about doing very little of note.

Pork butts and bourbon. Gotta feed the neighborhood. 3  8lb pork shoulders started at 7am with hickory, Apple and jack Daniels whiskey oak wood chips. Went to work. Stopped off at Earnest Brew Works in Toledo Oh on the way home. Some of the best local beers. Wife texts about 7pm that the pork is almost done. Come home, and shred and serve with some bourbon on the deck. Life is good even without football. Neighbors stopping by for their samples.

Depressed drinking! Probably just whiskey, gin, and rum straight. No Michigan football this Saturday. Even if we were to lose @ Washington it would have been fun watching. Now I have nothing.

Went to my mother-in-law's 80th birthday party tonight at my brother-in-law's house. Normally I don't dig these kinds of events but this time was different. My nephew has a turtle he got in Chinatown who he named named El Chapo. El Chapo escaped several weeks ago, and my nephew claimed he had only walked away for a few seconds (he's a turtle -- how fast could the getaway have been?) They found El Chapo days later, nestled in the cucumber garden. My sister-in-law lamented about how they're all immunocompromised and worried about how Covid might affect them (my husband's brother lost his spleen and his wife's son has Down's Syndrome) and yet they smoke like chimneys, lighting up one cig after another. There was one guy there with bright green hair, taking photographs, and another whose name was Paul and had no discernible relationship to anyone there. I have no idea who these people were. There was a cat named Buddha wandering around, eating cheese and crackers off the buffet table. And then everyone made toasts to my mother-in-law after inhaling helium from all the balloons. Most fun I've had since this whole Covid thing started.

To add to the turtle story, the turtle was one of two purchased in Chinatown to make soup. Turtle #1 succumbed to the soup kettle months earlier. Turtle #2, El Chapo, was saved the agony, and has now grown to be the size of a frisbee. The only potential foe in the house is a 28 pound orange cat named Taco, but so far, he's left El Chapo alone. I'm glad I wasn't invited over for the turtle soup because I would have vehemently declined. I avoid eating anything that could also be a pet.
