1. Proud of the players he recruited and coached.

2. Happy as a fan.

3. "Holy shit - that dude can coach. What's he doing that I can use next time?"

I haven't met many coaches that do that broad comparison thing that fans like to do. It's all concrete--what's he got that I'm not doing? what's he doing that I want to avoid?

Year of Revenge II

As I stated above here, he seems a bit hurt and bitter to me.  I think that will subside in time, and he will look upon his time at Michigan as something postive, even beyond what it did for him financially.

The old girlfriend is never going to say how hot the new girlfriend is, and we should not expect Hoke to be fawning over Harbaugh.  In his heart of hearts though, he has to recognize this turnaround was not going to happen under his regime.

Hoke was always a fish out of water when it came to this job.  For myself, I would just like to hear him say he is grateful for his chance, and hopes the team does well under the new coach.  I think if he became more proactive in that, the community would embrace him instead of making him the butt of so many jokes.

nor for that matter was his recruiting until his teams started to head south.  you don't have to love michigan though to know that sparty is walking into a mine field come saturday.  so looking forward to that game.

I don't know, man. There seems to be some revisionist history going on. Sure, you guys won big last year, but the prior two were real dogfights. However Hoke coached during the OSU week, it worked better than usual for him. Oh well, scoreboard OSU I guess. I can also understand not wanting to have to face a Harbaugh-coached team year in and year out.

Good to see people aren't going off the deep end in regard to Hoke. You have to admit the guy left a load of talent here. It's been hashed and rehashed but that defensive front is just incredibly talented and the dropoff behind them isn't significant. The OL is probably the same but those are places where it will take more scrubbing. The defense was already being coached competently.

There's no reason to sit on this board and bash Coach Hoke. He didn't produce the results we wanted on the field but he loves Michigan and always represented the university with class. I'm proud he's associated with our program, lack of football success or not.

He won 60 percent of his games with guys who didn't necessarily work with want he wanted to do and very young teams. He likely would have had a decent team this year and recruited almost every single guy on the team this year. He didn't meet Michigan's standards but he wasn't a "fucking disaster". Ask USC, Tennessee, Oregon (now), etc. what a "fucking disaster" looks like.

That would also mean Shane Morris as starting QB.  Probably Derrick Green as starting RB. Maybe Nussmeier couldve made something happen...But we wouldnt have Drevno developing the Oline nor Baxters wizardry on special teams... ugh don't even wanna think about that. I'm gonna go watch Harbaugh gifs and highlights of last weeks game now.

I am not saying he or his coaching staff was good at many of the aspects of their jobs or that they are even in the same league of Harbaugh's staff. I am just saying the Hoke was not the Chernobyl-type disaster many make him out to be. He went 7-5 and 5-7.  That was pretty bad. Oregon is probably going to miss a bowl game when they were in the championship game last year. Tennessee hired DeBord, who hasn't coached in years, and DeBorded harder than ever. Even Gus Malzahn (who many on this blog think is some sort of offensive genius) may miss a bowl this year after being picked as a preseason playoff favorite. Mike Reilly is "coaching" at Nebraska

Those are only examples from this year. If you want to see some absolutely disasters, look at Washington football from 2003 to 2008, Wazzou under whatever coach they before Leach. Beckman. Hazell.

Granted, Michigan has a higher floor than many of the schools that these guys were at, but RR proved you can go 3-8 at Michigan (he could have easily gone 3-8 again in 2010 as well).

I give a fuck. And I'll be the first to admit it: he was a bad coach, period, I have zero doubt about that. But I'll maintain that everything I've ever heard about him indicates he is a good man, and doesn't deserve to be mocked on Michigan blogs for no reason at all, especially when he's going out of his way to say nice things about the team that just fired him. Making fun of him just feels like needless grave dancing. What's the point?

Honest question: What does "represented the university with class" mean?

Does it mean not breaking the rules or having a personal scandal? If so, dozens of coaches can say the same. That's nice but I'm not sure how much that means. And although the later PR part of Concussiongate wasn't his fault, I don't see how anyone can say that staring out onto the field while Shane Morris hobbled around concussed represented the university well.

Honest answer, it means a lot of things, including, but no limited to: not oversigning, not paying players, not making incendiary comments to the media, no embarrassing scandals or major NCAA violations (I sort of give him a pass on concussiongate after reading BLL, but I'm not sure we will ever know for sure what happened there), promoting an atmosphere that graduated an awful lot of his players, etc. etc.

Sure there are dozens of coaches who fit this description, and I think they deserve to be lauded by their respective fanbases as well, not mocked. There are also dozens more who in no way fit this description and I'm not sure how much I'd like them to be the coach of my favorite team, win or lose.

I'd also add that post NFL Harbaugh is vastly superior to Stanford Harbaugh. Stanford Harbaugh was great, but in the end he was still a college coach. The NFL experience he got is invaluable in terms of scheme, preparation, organization. It is also a tremendous recruiting tool. Of the three superstar coaches in college today (Meyer, Saban, Harbaugh) only Harbaugh can say he was a success in college and the NFL.

Hoke recruited a great group of smart, hard-working, and talented kids. He helped developed a DL stable where the second string guys are future NFLers. He was a poor game day coach and didn't know how to make the spread to "manball" work (and was possibly harmed by an AD trying to dictate the offensive identity).

I know the team can't control any of it, but it makes me somewhat nervous to see everyone picking Michigan this week. This is what MSU feeds off of; the idea that it's them against the world.

I'm sure the team is blocking it out and just focusing on improving, but you can bet your ass that MSU has this all posted around their facilities. And we all know how Dantonio gets when he feels even slightly disrespected. I just hope the team comes out ready to match MSU's intensity, because even though they looked sloppy against Rutgers and Purdue, MSU will likely play its best game of the year on Saturday.

Dude! Every post you enter expresses some kind of nervous/fear/anxiety or is stamping out optimism. Get a grip man! You're gonna wear holes in your hands with all the fretful wringing you do. We get it, you've not "bought in" yet and you're terrified of Sparty. You know what. Fuck Sparty! Their reign of terror is OVER!

Then I come in all over confident with reality and drop that 34-7 winning score and people think I'm a little off my rocker but in the end I wasn't. If you've watched all the games and if you look at the coaches and what they've done this year it's right there in front of us. Just breath, it's going to happen.
