Hockey CC: Mike Babcock
let's look at some of the info here.
- Contract expires after this season.
- Made spontaneous comment out of nowhere about being on the Michigan bench a year ago, later dismissing it as a joke.
- this posted in a front page post by Brian back when those comments were made-
Red Berenson has two years left on his contract and says this will be his last one. Speculation about his replacement has been rife. Veritably so. Folks around the program have been chattering about Red Wings coach Mike Babcock taking over for a few years now, primarily Michael Spath at the Wolverine but also from guys at the Daily:
@MichiganHockey @YostBuilt @cdbarker FWIW, in 09 I heard from multi. ppl. closely tied to Red when I covered UM that MB would be successor.

people jumped up and down on here and all over the country saying Harbaugh to Michigan was a pipe dream. And it happened. Could Hackett pull it off?

Common sense says, "It isn't happening," but that doesn't mean it's impossible. It certainly doesn't really make anyone "stupid" for thinking it could happen. Berensen was an NHL coach of the year once.
I would put the odds at 200-1, but there is still a "1" there.

I'd rather the Red Wings be good than M hockey. Neg away.

never favor a pro team over Michigan....Ever!!!

This is the wrong choice. That is not up for debate.

I've got to admit the Red Wings is the only sports team I'll root for over their Michigan counterpart. I feel so dirty...
I hope my laundry beats your laundry!

I hope my laundry and piece of paper beats your laundry and piece of paper
yep, sounds so much more important when you put it that way

Is it possible to catch lightning in a bottle twice?

If Hackett pulled that off I would assume, in addition to Interim AD, he also acts as Chariman of the Pentaverate.

We'll have to run the Milky Way part past Zoltan.

So you have no new information*. Let's at least wait until some random person tweets something about this in 2015.
*I suppose Harbaugh coming here got you thinking all things are possible.

I understand that hockey has been iffy the last couple years, but I think Red has earned the right to retire on his own terms. Our only duty is to have a succession plan in place for when he does.
March 22nd, 2015 at 10:49 PM ^
that put football in this position.
March 23rd, 2015 at 11:11 AM ^
It's the execution of the thinking; i.e. we let Lloyd retire on his own terms (sort of...probably stayed on a couple years out of devotion to UM) but we utterly failed in the part about having a succession plan in place.
March 22nd, 2015 at 10:56 PM ^
I think many of us are pretty whatever about his retirement date now because he's got max one more year. If his contract were for 3 or 5 more years, I'd be thinking Hackett needs to make a move
March 22nd, 2015 at 11:56 PM ^
I imagine he signed the three year deal intending to retire once it is complete. So basically the AD has had this period of time to get its act together, and there is still another year left. I would be shocked if they don't pull off a great hire whenever it happens.
Everyone gets all up in arms about this subject, but Red is the one who said he would step down if he wasn't the guy to lead the program anymore.

Jim Hackett will pull it off.

I think if Babcock wasn't going to Toronto he might mention it in the media? Or just sign the extension offered by the Wings...lot of money on that table.
March 22nd, 2015 at 11:22 PM ^
Yes he should say something to the media because coaches always say what they mean. Right Miami Dolphins coach Nick Saban?

tongue Mutt (with the Oakland Toronto comment that is)

Toronto is a tire fire. Babcock isnt headed there anytime soon.
March 22nd, 2015 at 10:37 PM ^
If anybody can get him, it's Hackett. However, college hockey isn't as prestigious as college football. Mel Pearson or bust.

Anything is possible with Hackett. If he does this right after hiring HARBAUGH, he deserves a building named after him.
QUICK, someone make a gif of Babcock leaving the Joe and riding I-94 to Yost ala

People just want to believe...
Whatever.

The only difference between Harbaugh-to-Michigan and Babcock-to-Michigan is what happens after you pinch yourself.
So I don't pinch myself and just go w/ it.
