Hello: is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
through all those lonely, lonley, lonley nights....ELO, Telephone. Telephone? That was a device that usually hung on your wall in the kitchen, or on a table in the den. Some days you would have to wait for it to ring when you were expecting a call. That, alot of times never came.
If you had to leave you could set a device that was called an answering machine and also if you wanted you could leave your house and call from a device we called a telephone booth. Like a see through out house with a thing we called a pay phone in it.
We didn't have no damn fancy answering machine thingy back in the day. If you wanted to know who was calling, you had to pick up the phone.
I made this mistake during the '88 Michigan - Notre Dame football game. The phone rang in the middle of the game with Michigan holding on to a tenuous lead. I made the mistake of answering it.
The guy on the other end was an old co-worker friend who I had not talked to for a long time, so I could not just hurry him off the line. The dude went on and on while I was trying to pay attention to the game with the sound off. He would not shut up.
During this time, ND ran back a punt or KO, I forget which, and momentum swung their way. We lost on a field goal at the end. Had we beaten them, we would have likely wound up ranked #1 at the end of the season after beating USC in the Rose Bowl.
I blame myself to this day. DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE DURING MICHIGAN GAMES!!
Priorities, man.
