he and Rumler for G/C spots - nice
Guard should be set now. Get Harrod and another tackle (Keegan/Truss/Anyone else) and we should be good on OL for the year.
that would be a solid class
2-3 guys ready to contribute sooner and 2-3 to develop
Love any O Line commitment.
Need Harrod for OT now and I'll be very pleased
Welcome, young man! We hope the absolute best for you!
Great size and looks like a good kid (and from MI). Congrats!
I believe Barnhart is being recruited for center. He has really good mobility, reminds me of Mason Cole. Solid pickup.
But in my opinion, there's a very real chance he gets on the field before Ruiz is gone. He could definitely start at center as depth, but I really do see him playing guard in a couple years.
He has a great frame and can move, so being a pulling guard definitely isn't out of the question. I expect it will take some time for him to add weight, but he looks like he could play at 315 lbs with ease.
Don't overlook the fact that he played Tight End as a Junior, after playing on the interior line as a freshman and sophomore. I don't live in Michigan anymore, so I have no clue what position he's going to play as a senior. He also plays basketball. But to me that shows not only does he have great athleticism, but he's underscouted and underdeveloped as an interior lineman. He performed alright at camps, but he just didnt have the technique or size to beat elite level DL consistently and got put on his ass a couple times. I'd imagine Barnhart is a definite, no doubt redshirt, but I could see him developing very quickly.
Magnus liked Rumler more at C than G
but between these 2 we have a C and G so that is good
It's not so much that I liked Rumler more at C than OG, but I did say that he doesn't really have the athleticism for tackle. I have heard that the coaching staff wants him primarily for center. Center and guard are pretty similar spots. Rumler is more of a drive blocker than a puller.
What?
You leave early if you're an OL that is like All-American level good. Jake Long had to make a decision to come back for his senior year because he was the best OT in the country. Lewan didn't even have that big of a decision to make and he was also a top 5 OT in the country as a junior.
Neither Bredeson or Onwenu have proven to be that yet. Onwenu wasn't even a starter all of last season. If either of those guys leave early, it would be the most out the blue thing I've seen in a while. Like Donovan Warren leaving early type weird, and even then he was a Freshman All-American/All-Big Ten first team guy.
You say potato...
his program has emboddied over the past few years at UM (not to mention his captain lobbing N bombs around).
Gotta get small victories somewhere.
Welcome, Karsen!
Someone send out the Magnus bat signal.. Magnus, where is Barnhart slated to play, and whats your educated opinion of him ?
Since I can never decide if I like the pickup until he chimes in.
Sometimes I can make a decision pre-Magnus by going against Maizen's opinion, but I hate basing my outlook that way.
Going about your day in an anti-Maizen way is probably a good idea.
but I do remember Magnus was pretty damn high on Barnhart and I think he liked him a lot more than Stewart. Hope I'm not putting words into his mouth though.
My opinion, Kid is tough and mean as hell. He's athletic and definitely got the athleticism for tackle, but he may not have the pure size. Personally I think he's a guard, and I think he has a very high ceiling for a prospect in his rating range.
a trend of the coaches going after underscouted and underdeveloped two sport athletes. I'm not saying the coaches aren't attempting to reel in the big fish, but I feel like with Barnhart, Velasquez, Jack Stewart, Gabe Newburg, Ronnie Bell, Michael Barrett, and Luke Schoonmaker are all very underrecruited dudes that excelled in multiple sports. Guys that play multiple sports can sometimes be underrecruited and underdeveloped because they don't spend as much time at recruiting camps and on the recruiting circuit.
I do like Barnhart. I'm a sucker for tight ends-turned-linemen. Those guys can usually bend and move. I'm not a big fan of recruiting mammoths on the offensive line, because they've often already come close to hitting their peak.
I think the coaches like him more at guard, but he's a guy who can play all five spots. I think he's a lot like Mason Cole, but he's not as polished yet, because he's a tight end in a run-heavy offense. Cole had some of the best technique of any OL coming to Michigan during the time I've been following recruiting.
I like Barnhart. I don't think he's going to turn into a 1st round draft pick or anything, but I think he's going to be a very solid player. If we can find a Mason Cole-like player within the state of Michigan, I think that would make most of us pretty happy.
Always good to see a commitment! Welcome aboard, young man, I'm sure you'll see the field in no time!
Michigan building that pipeline to follow Ruiz.
Awesome News, Welcome Aboard Master Barnhart!
