And to hell with the rest of Ohio as well.

To hell with the NCAA.

"Beilein has run model programs in college, free of scandal and impropriety. In recent years, he's become increasingly frustrated with the nature of college basketball recruiting and the retention of top players."

Of course not and we all know why.  Two of the most honest college coaches in the last 10 years or so - JB and Thad Matta (I hate to admit this) are now both gone due to the underhanded, widespread cheating going on. Slime balls like Calipari, coach K, Sean Miller and yes, Izzo are now  the norm.

Yikes, I'm cringing on your behalf at this post. Guess you don't care if you reveal yourself to be willfully fact-agnostic in your homerism.

Izzo is extensively well documented as a) being a completely above-board recruiter, b) having [and, sometimes, publicly venting his] deep frustrations about pay-to-play and the state of college basketball, and c) having lost out on your most celebrated player of all time, Chris Weber, because your program was willing to get dirty with the recruitment and ours was not.

MSU *always* loses the recruiting battles where shenanigans are involved. Not only has nothing ever surfaced suggesting Izzo recruits improperly, but people in the know (of any number of school affiliations) have repeatedly vouched for his total unwillingness to play that side of the recruiting game.

Hate the guy because he coaches at another school, fine, if you're into juvenile and petty things like that knock yourself out. But come on a public forum and trash a guy's character in obvious ignorance of an avalanche of evidence to the contrary... you kinda just look like an asshole with an axe to grind.

Read your entire comment and I'm still waiting for all these facts you're talking about. As for Chris Webber, Ed Martin was equally frustrated as Izzo then that he didn't go to MSU, so your overall lack of understanding of that scandal kinda negates everything else you claimed.

I did lol at your remark about how I'm an asshole with an axe to grind while inferring that Lurking Spartan is an unbiased observer.

FUCK OFF to ALL THE GILBERTS in the whole fucking world: Gilbert Gottfried, Gilbert Arenas, Gilbert O'Sullivan, both Gilbert and his co-composer Sullivan, Gilbert Grape, Beaver Cleaver's friend Gilbert, even the town of Gilbert AZ.

BUT ESPECIALLY DAN GILBERT!!!

If I was Dan Gilbert and was looking for a good man and a good coach.....I would do the same thing.

PS.....Gilbert Gottfried has always been nails on the chalkboard but I know Rod Gilbert and he is a good guy and could play hockey too.

Now that guy Gilbert Arenas bringing his gun in the Washington Bullets....err...Wizards locker room--I think the jury is out on him.

John Beilein did not make a 'beeline'  to the NBA.and the $ (see Detroit Pistons).

The Cavs and NBA $ made him a deal he couldn't figure out why to refuse.

The NCAA basically blesses the "one and done" system so why not coach them in the NBA for more time and more money?

John Beilein did M proud--he ran a clean program and won with challenging and youthful personalities in the 'drive by' culture top NCAA programs support and promote.

I do remember when Gilbert was going after Izzo some years ago and thinking that was a bad idea because Izzo, frankly, seems like the type of asshole who would flame out in the NBA almost immediately.  So of course Gilbert pulls his head out of his ass enough to figure out that getting a Michigan guy to coach your team is the best bet.

Nobody around these parts knows how to do negbangs.   Here's how it works:

-Beilein was never an assistant coach because his ego couldn't handle it

-Brian Ellerbe was a much better in-game manager than JB

-Tommy Amaker's turnover-allergic offensive system was the best thing about Michigan basketball in the past 25 years

Neg me.

Dan may own a Cleveland team, but he’s Michigan through and through. What’s he’s done for Detroit has been pretty incredible over the past 6-7 years.

Yeah Gilbert has been great.  This post if like half-jest, but as the guy below notes, he also tried to hire Izzo.  And this is a no brainer for Gilbert.  He just increased fan interest (to the extent any exists) and the level of professionalism and skill in his organization.  Why wouldn't you do it.

It, of course, is a terrible decision for Beilein given the team will go nowhere barring extreme luck.

Well, as for the MSU conspiracy theories, don't forget that Gilbert originally wanted to hire Izzo.

And, let's not change the facts.  Beilein DID NOT turn down the Pistons.  The Pistons never offered him the job.  He waited around and decided to stop the speculation.  If the Pistons had made him the same offer the Cavaliers have, he may have taken it.  We will never know.

I get the anger but Gilbert has the right (and responsibility to his fans and team) to hire who he thinks is the best available coach.  Beilein has the right to try to see if he can be a successful NBA coach.

I'm not angry at either of them.  I am just sad to see Beilein go.  And, now, we have to move on and hire the right replacement.  My main concern is that Warde Manuel will be doing the hiring.

Carol Hutchins did play college basketball.  Hmmm..... (only kidding)

You really should.  Gilbert made his money on predatory loans.  His only real saving grace is he sees the money to be looted in fixing up buildings in Detroit rather than the insane method of buying them to let them rot & run values down further for speculation like the littlest caesar (& others.)

Said this in another thread but it still rings true: better to be known as the school where your basketball stars leave early and head coach bolts for the NBA rather than be known as the school that allowed the sexual assault of hundreds of young women, attempted to sweep it under the rug, and then when that didn't work, bring in an interim president who instead tried bullying and belittling said women into silence, and telling the world that its all a conspiracy by money-hungry opportunists.

I know what I'd rather be known for......
