Heisman - Did Championship weekend impact voting?

Submitted by Amazinblu on December 5th, 2022 at 11:39 AM

Any thoughts on the Heisman?

A week ago, it seemed like Caleb Williams at USC won the Heisman after their game against ND.  Of course, that was before an egg was laid against Utah.

Corum did not play.  The Buckeyes and Bama were spectators on Saturday.  Duggan and TCU came up short.  Bennett and Georgia were solid in a win over LSU - but, it doesn’t seem like he was in much consideration.

Who will, or should, win the Heisman?  Your thoughts?

Biggest disappointment (in a season with very few to be fair) is that, if Corum plays the last 2.5 games at his usual level he probably wins the Heisman. He was on pace against Illinois, and you have to believe he would have broke a couple big ones against OSU and Purdue (although Edwards is faster, so maybe Corum gets caught on the first of the long OSU TDs where there was a safety with a bit of a shot at it).

The way the season has ended, feels like Corum had the best chance to finish strong among the Heisman contenders.

If you caught Caleb Williams interview yesterday on ESPN, he seemed pretty confident that he has already won it. Olu has been the best player in America this season IMO.

Williams will most likely win it.

Just imagine, Corum does not go down and puts up Edwards stats vs. OSU and Purdue.  He would be the front runner for sure!  Really feel bad for him as his has played his heart out all year long.  He should get a NYC invite.  Hopefully he gets back to 100% real quick (CFP potentially??)

I keep seeing Caleb Williams popping up as the front runner for the Heisman but I can't for the life of me shake off the fact he wasn't able to get the job done against Utah, twice, this season.

On top of that, his "Fuck Utah" nail polish the other night kind of goes against the mission statement that the committee/voters looks for when deciding who to vote for. The whole Integrity to the game is kind of lost with his maturity level that was displayed last Friday night.

I'm laughing as I type this because it's not like the NCAA/CFP cares about integrity anyways..

Just my 2 cents, but what do I know..

I would still give it to Caleb. He made a valiant attempt at playing through injury and made quite a few good plays despite the loss. USC's terrible defense is the reason they shit the bed, not Williams.

I do not think Blake will win the Heisman (though I think he deserves it) but I would like to see him get invited and I think he has a shot. FWIW from what I saw yesterday BC isn’t even on the board in terms of players with odds to win the Heisman. They have betting odds on Williams, Duggan, Bennett and Stroud in that order with Caleb Williams being the overwhelming favorite.

Earlier in November Corum was on the board and had the 3rd best odds

I originally heard a version of this theory on a Bill Simmons podcast a few years back but when there is no deserving candidate for an annual award, it should be held over like a skin in golf and worth double the next year.  So, JJ would get two Heisman's next year.

If I had a vote I'd still give it to Williams. He didn't exactly lay an egg on Friday night, it was USC's defense that did that.

You watch him play and he's the most dynamic player I've watched all season when healthy.

Wide open. I think Caleb Williams, Bijan Robinson, and Michael Penix should go to NY. A year like this you can definitely make the case for Clark Phillips or Sydney Brown.

It's just silly at this point, given to the QB with the best stats by default.

After Stroud, Duggan, and Williams failed to win their rivalry/championship games its clear Corum is the best of the bunch.

My guess is Williams still wins it since his stats weren't awful against Utah.

Caleb is probably still going to win. A lot of the votes came in last week before the Pac-12 title game so USC's stinker of a performance has been rendered largely irrelevant in that regard.

Its truly a shame that Corum got injured. If he didn't, he could've (probably would've) won the thing. He and Williams probably would've split the votes a bit evenly last week, and then whatever was left would've likely gone to Blake.

Oh well. Is what it is.

If Corum hadn't been injured, put up the numbers in the second half like he did in the first half v Illinois and put up the numbers that Edwards did against OSU and Purdue, he'd be solidly in the mix.

But, apart from not playing, the last two weeks hurt his Heisman chances because of the perception that our O Line is so good that anybody can do it - just plug them into the backfield and let them run.

That said, I think it's Williams in a runaway.

I realize I have my Michigan goggles on right now, but the only player who is yet to play themselves out of winning the Heisman is Blake Corum.  Stroud lead his offense at Home to 3 points in the 2nd half against us in his biggest game of the year.  Williams was held pretty much in check in a blowout loss to Utah in their Conference Championship.  On the other hand, Blake Corum had over 100 yards in the first half against Illinois before he got hurt.  With how Michigan has finished this season, you have to think Corum would be running away with the Heisman if he does not get injured.

I still think it's Caleb based on the difference he has made and the body of work. The guy clearly was lame but tried to rough it out after the long run. This year, no one player was so incredible that the winner was a worthy match to the best of the best Heisman winners.

Nevada has a voting system that allows you to choose "none of these" - this year I don't see a great player but can't pick none of these if I were a voter. This isn't like picking Jason White or Gino Torretta.

USC finished 11-2 with wins at UCLA, vs. ND (when portal guy Pyne was lights out), and a close loss at Utah when Caleb had 5 TDs passes.
