HBO's The Rivalry

SIAP: HBO On Demand is offering reruns of The Rivalry. I still tear up every time they show Jim Mandich being carried off the field.

It's like it jumps from Bo to Tressel, and everything in-between is covered in like a minute. You don't need a stop watch. Just check out the last national title mentions.

Agreed.  I don't like this documentary one bit, particularly because it repeatedly refers to the Michigan contingent as "arrogant" and TSIO as "scrappy underdogs," along with glossing over the nineties, etc.

I don't remember which one, but one of the local newspapers confirmed Lloyd Carr was never contacted.  I think it was even asked in a presser.  At any rate, it was definitely confirmed that the HBO folks didn't even bother with Lloyd.  Unfortunately, it's not that easy to find those articles 4 years later.

You have my curiosity piqued now.  I have only watched it once and don't recall noticing the bias but will see it again tomorrow and take note.  I didn't see it when it first came out because I don't have HBO, but several, non-UM people mentioned it to me, and how much they liked it, as they didn't know much about the rivalry beforehand.  They were not biased either way but seemed genuinely impressed with the whole thing.

To an outsider I think the big revelation is in the early years, which they knew nothing about, so they wouldn't pick up on any slant related to the later period.

I suspect it will look at least somewhat different to me this time around.

When it first aired, I remembered many posters on OSU message boards acknowledged it was shown more from their perspective.

Even such, it's a pretty backhanded portrayal. There's a definite undercurrent of "these poor hicks from Ohio have nothing else to aspire to than beating Michigan."

While the Lloyd era was largely omitted, the first 20 minutes of the show focused on how Michigan created big time football.  So I would say all and all it is pretty balanced.  It's just that the heavy Michigan content comes so early.

I was hoping it wasn't going to be as ohio slanted as some here suggested but it is. Yes it talks about the early years of UM footall but it spends far more time talking about Woody, Bruce and Tressel as well as their last NC. It doesn't talk about the back to back Big Ten Chamionships under Bo's tenure. It doesn't talk about the 97' NC. And it would be nice if for once the media would recognize, when they talk about UM recruiting ohio players, that UM has another major in state University to compete with for in state talent that ohio doesn't. Just another example of the media perpetuating a false reality.
