Does anyone remember if Harbaugh was this exuberant on the recruiting trail while at Stanford? I'm guessing he hasn't changed much, but that the media is significantly more interested this time around.

His "personal belief system" is rooted in Catholicism. De La Salle is a Catholic High School, so I assume there were very few there he had to convert. He was probably "preaching to the choir" as the saying goes. (But no religion on the board please, or am I too late?)

Yes, no religion on the board, per se. However, to the degree that the beliefs of the coaches and athletes are out there publicly, in the current news cycle, it's at least of some interest to some of us.

In John Bacon's book, he talks some about the faith life of many guys on the team, and how important that is to them, particularly many of the black players.

Interestingly, I don't know if you remember the coverage (it was here on the board), but it becomes clear that some of the faith perspectives and support for the athletes on the team were extremely important to Rashan Gary's mom, and to Rashan. It's none of my business, and I'm not asking, but I could easily believe that while you'll never see it covered publicly, faith is going to be an important factor for some of the recruits as they consider where to go to school. They would want to be on a team where they aren't the only one who has a strong faith life.

The 30 for 30 on Bill McCartney went in depth on his recruiting philosophy. He definitely used his faith when recruiting. Many of his rival coaches tried to use it against him. I don't think Harbaugh is as outwardly religious as McCartney (who is? The Pope, maybe?) but he's not shy about it either.
