Harbaugh's record through 31 games.

Submitted by bo_lives on

First off let's dispell with any notion that Harbaugh himself will ever be on any hotseat. We wanted him more than anything and we got him, signed him a huge contract, and realistically there are not better options out there. The day Warde Manual fires Harbaugh and hires Dan Mullen or some other shot in the dark is never. Harbaugh has a better track record than anything out there.

That being said, let's compare two coach's records through 31 games. I think you already know where this is going but when you look at the blind record without context (and I admit context matters a LOT) it's still disturbing.

Coach 1:

24-7 overall

Two 2nd place finishes in the division

1-1 vs. Rival #1, 1-1 vs Rival #2

13-4 overall in Conference (0.765 win percentage)

1-1 in Bowl Games (BCS bowl win)

Coach 2:

24-7 overall

Two 3rd place finishes in the division.

0-2 vs. Rival #1, 1-2 vs. Rival #1

14-5 overall in Conference (0.737 win percentage)

1-1 in Bowl Games (New Year's Day bowl win)

After his 31st game, Coach 1 went into Happy Valley at night, ran the ball 27 times for 27 yards, and forever lost the faith of the Michigan faithful. Coach 1 had a crappy track record and did a lot of other incompetent things that got him fired.

As fate would have it, Coach 2 is going into Happy Valley at night in two weeks, with a chance to regain the faith of the Michigan faithful. I am not holding my breath but that would be a big win to say the least.

First loss to MSU was a fluke w/that punt.  This was in a rainstorm, 5 TO and still only lost by 4.

If you can't tell that this team is better under JH than under the previous two coaches, I can't help you.

It was 1) a bad game 2) in a rainstorm 3) with another big fluke play (the last Lewerke first down).

It sucks to lose. But to act like there are no factors to the loss outside of Harbaugh's control is stupid. The playcalling was dumb in the rain. Some of it is on Harbaugh, but Isaac's fumble? McKeon's fumble? Lewerke's first down? The team STILL had a chance. Or was McDoom's drop on Harbaugh too?

Negging you? What part of your comment is not 100% accurate? People are insane. Fickle fans. I place my football trust in Harbaugh. If he needs to make a change on offensive side he will, if he thinks Speight is the best QB to start, he is. I get it people are just frustrated with a loss, any loss. In fact, there is never any good loss for a coach at Michigan. I want to see how this team responds. But my god people get some perspective.

1-4.  Drevon is not an OC.  The Drevno, Hamilton, Frey and Jay Harbaugh combo has been a disaster.  Sam Webb has hinted on his show that Isaac didn't see the field much when Tyrone Fucking Wheatley was here because he didn't deserve it and he proved Wheatley right tonight.  Hold on to the fucking football!!!!  And I will again ask the Speighters to stand up and be counted becasue he was never the problem with the offense.  Speight gives us the best chance to win, period.   FUCK EVERYTHING.

The difference between the two is the Don Brown hire. Harbaugh needs to make a similar one for the offense.

The honeymoon should be over though. And 2018 recruiting has been very disappointing.

Recruting the previous years wasn't amazing, either.  You can count on one hand the number of players UM signed over the last 3 years that Alabama or Ohio State really wanted (DPJ, Gary, Solomon, and ?).  There might have been some miscellaneous 4* that they would have happily accepted, but those are the only 3 guys I can think of that they weren't able to replace with another equally good 4* anyway.

In contrast, Ohio State had *at least* 10 players in the class of 2017 alone that the Michigan coaching staff would have shit themselves for a chance to sign.

So yeah, the fact that 2018 recruiting isn't shaping up as well as 2017 is... concerning.

You’re on to something which is extremely concerning and the bigger question is whether there is a sufficient pool of talent anymore with the decline in the number of kids playing ball? It’s difficult for me to reconcile why wouldn’t a kid want to play for a guy who was an NFL qb, NFL coach, and whose bro is an NFL coach?

I’m all for Harbaugh, and I believe in him. I’m happy he is our coach. But the honeymoon is officially over. The cute stuff he does on the side isn’t so cute when you’re 1-4 against MSU and OSU, and are showing no progress, or regression in certain sections of the team. Time to take the MSU game and every game personal. Stop the podcasts and all the other extracurricular stuff, recruit, develop, and win. Take a hard look at your program , especially on offense, and make the tough decisions for the betterment of the program (coaching loyalties). He’s paid handsomely to do so, now it’s time to earn it.

I don’t think Harbaugh will have a Hoke like decline but it is a valid comparison. You have to be a serious homer and possibly delusional to not start questioning Harbaugh. Michigan will probably have a lot of 8-10 win seasons under Harbaugh but I don’t see how they will be elite. I don’t see Michigan beating OSU for a long time unless Meyer up and leaves for some reason.
