Had to listen on radio

Happy for Brandy that he is retiring

Hope the next play by play guy remembers to mention, where the ball is spotted, what is the down and distance, how many yards are gained on a play. Understand which player made the play.

my wife said, I don’t know what is happening in the game, he is just talking and giving no info… I could only say…Yep

Yeah, it's long past time for a change.  Was traveling during the Rutgers game and he didn't even try to paint a picture, just gave his reaction to every play without describing it.  RPOs baffled him ("no, wait!...").  Was like sitting next to an old man watching the game on a TV I couldn't see or hear

Yeah that sucks.  I’ve been in that spot a few times.
He’s always asking questions too. “Did he catch that?” We don’t know, Jim, you’re the one at the game.
I’m looking forward to hopefully a great new radio crew next year.

This was the Roman Wilson catch in the second half. I heard the same thing. And I thought, did he score? He did it! Did what? Catch? Touchdown? Shoot a deer?

Joking aside. I’ve loved Brandstander as color guy for lions and Michigan for a while. His play by play is not a good representation of him. I wish him a happy retirement.

Father Time is undefeated, I wish him best in his retirement.  His play for, and enthusiasm of, Michigan is much appreciated from a 1999 graduate.  I got a bit choked up at the end of his radio call today.  He and Dierdorf are true Michigan Men, thank you, love you.

I appreciate that he and Dan played for M and Dan was at one time a good color comments but Brandy was never good.

he isn’t good on inside Michigan football and he isn’t good describing plays in a football game which is his primary purpose as a play by play man

so many talented people were passed over for play by play once they let Beckman go to be PC because he had been around for so long.

as I said, happy for him that he is retiring and I am happy he is retiring because that position deserves better

In fairness to Brandy, his work for UM after Frank Beckman (an excellent PbP man) was the first time in his career that he was called upon to do PbP work.  It was never going to go well, he’s always been a ‘relationship’ guy, not a professional broadcaster.  Bless him, and remember him fondly for all his ‘boy, howdy’ work with Bo and Lloyd on Michigan Replay and as a long-time color sidekick for Beckman.  I hope he has a long and happy retirement.

My initial years at U-M were with Ufer, and of course I thought he was fantastic. When Beckmann took over after Ufer passed, I realized that Ufer actually wasn't nearly as good at describing exactly what was going on down on the field as I'd been thinking—Beckmann was far superior to Ufer in that respect.

I think Beckmann had lost a little off his fastball by the time he stepped down, but IMHO he contributed greatly to his own retirement with his non-sports commentary.

If you listen to the old Shutdown Fullcast episode where they spent a good 30 minutes doing affectionate, good natured satire you’ll understand the appeal.  That doesn’t mean you can’t have your opinion, just that there’s a lot of other people who feel differently

Always pathetic when announcers who should have retired years ago hang on when they have no business being in the booth anymore.

Retire ontime and give some younger, competent, and hungry announcers a chance.

I thought he was fine as a color guy with Beckmann (I last listened to games on the radio in ca. 2005). Definitely a voice that made you instantly recognize you're listening to a Michigan game, and I suspect that nostalgia is what will make people miss him more than anything.

However, given his style, it's not surprising at all to me that he has been sub-par as PBP guy. PBP requires some very specific skills, and it's often quite offensive when they put in people into that position who don't have them. Leah Hextall calling NHL games on ESPN+ is another example of that.

My 5-year-old daughter said tonight while listening to Brandy, “what’s going on Dad?”  I simply replied “Michigan is playing.  No idea how they’re doing”

I still listen to a lot of Michigan football game on the (via Internet) radio because I live out of area and like to do other things on Saturdays (chores, work, hobbies, etc) during some of the games but still want to be involved in the spectating of the game's live happenings.  I don't think of listening on the radio as a negative because it lets me get stuff done and TBH vs. TV announcers, the audio announcers seem to be more knowledgeable and in tune with the team, and if I am listening to our announcers it make up for a lot not watching it on TV.

Brandy and Dierdorf are the Elder Statesmen, and at my age (45) I will miss them.  I am sure Jon Jansen will do a great and proud job for us going forward.

Brandy is a great Michigan man and was a great color guy. I enjoyed him for both Michigan and the Lions.

He does not have the skills for Pbp and never has. And that is not a knock against him: play-by-play requires a specific mix of skills and voice that is unique and simply not something that everyone is gifted with. Even excellent broadcasters in other areas can be bad play-by-play commenters, people who are skilled public speakers, you name it. You have to be built for it.

Brandy isn't built for this. He just isn't. I don't resent him for it in the slightest, but the radio broadcasts are not good listens because he is not in a position that is suited to his skillset.

I would love for Brandy to get an opportunity to be a guest color guy for a quarter in the next season or two after he retires, to remind people of what he's good at and what he has meant to the program for the entire lifetime of many of us. But it is definitely time to get someone else to call the games.

As many have said, Brandy never should have been the PVP guy.  He’s not good at it at all.  He was a solid color guy, but he has been bad at PBP from day 1 and has not improved.

Brandy and Dan are the best in the business. I often listen to them rather than the TV announcers. They are way more informative and paint a much better picture. The job of the play-by-play announcer is not to describe every minute detail but instead to paint the picture. Brandy is excellent at this. Along with Dan, their knowledge of the game and of Michigan sets them apart.

I wish Jim well. Going back to when I lived overseas and couldn’t get the TV, I’ve listened to dozens of games he covered, at least. He filled big shoes by replacing Frank Beckmann. But he was a far better color commentator than a PbP guy.

That said, we have pretty high standards in these parts. Ufer, Beckmann, Abel, Ernie.

I listened to the Penn State game and had no trouble following along.

Was Brandy a good pick for PBP?  No, but he improved tremendously and his and Dierdorf’s chemistry and love for Michigan have the broadcast charm.  And I never thought Beckman was that good.

In any event, this blog’s constant attacks on Jim are tiresome and gratuitous.  We all know what people feel about him and knifing him after his second to last regular season game is an odd choice

Ha. I listened while in the car during that crazy span in the 3rd quarter. I had no idea what was going on and Brandy could barely breathe.

Listening to Blaha was equally hilarious for the state game. Trying to talk tough gos beloved Spartans as they are being led to slaughter.
