He’s gone.

I mean, there is no way he's coming back. He is behind 2 true freshman + Benny.

It seems like one challenge with the portal is players entering, but not getting interest or attention - resulting in their not being picked up.

Rooks will get picked up for sure. I will take this as a sign Jenkins is returning.

I think if you enter the portal and don't get picked up you're fucked 6 different ways and twice on Sunday. Joel Klatt was talking about this and made it sound like you could lose your scholarship and some kids get bad advice to enter.

Rooks will easily find a home, but there are a lot of kids that won't. It's going to be a HUGE problem.
And they're not going to be able to go back because their roster spot will be gone.
Some guys are in the portal to leverage better NIL deals, but this ain't that.

Rooks to Transfer Portal 4. Check mate…

Unfortunate. He hadn't played a ton, but it seemed to me that when he was in there he knew what he was supposed to do. Best of luck to him.

/scours portal for players named Pawn, Bishop, Knight, Queen, and King

It's time to get used to this. If a player is not seeing the field and not in your two-deep after two years in the program (except for maybe OL given their development curve), he might be motivated to evaluate his options in the portal.

I want the guys who want to compete and win the job, even if it takes 3-4 years
December 12th, 2022 at 6:59 PM ^
Players at this level want and need to see the field eventually, and some kids need an opportunity to play in order to grow. Rooks fell behind two true freshmen this year--what are the realistic odds he was going to eventually win the job?
In my ideal scenario, kids like Rooks would stay at least three years (redshirt sophomores) and try to get a degree before leaving, but I get why he would leave now.

Jump in that portal, and do whatever you gonna get
December 12th, 2022 at 6:57 PM ^
Bummer, the trenches are the spots where giving guys time most often pays off. But in the portal era guys aren't often gonna wait for that.

Wish him well, and thank him for contributing to the team.

Unless a player talks s*** on the way out (in which case they're dead to me), I wish them the best.

No great loss; he could move well in a straight line, but his capacity to move diagonally was nonexistent.
ba dum tss…

Seems like a good use of the portal for everyone - Rooks gets a chance to compete for a spot elsewhere and UM has some clarity about depth at tackle. It sucks to lose him but UM has depth there and can also recruit from the portal for it. Wish him luck.

MgoBlog is going to have to change the boilerplate in the section "PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE" for Hello posts to something like this:
"Will probably redshirt and bulk up as a freshman and compete for a starting position in his sophomore year. If he doesn't earn a starting role by then, he will probably bail for the portal and try it somewhere else."

Sucks, think he had a shot to contribute next year with Mazi leaving (please stay, Kris), but with Graham, Benny, Grant all already ahead of him and Benny in particular primed for a breakout next year it looks like a tough depth chart situation. Rooks will have no shortage of suitors.
