It's time to get used to this. If a player is not seeing the field and not in your two-deep after two years in the program (except for maybe OL given their development curve), he might be motivated to evaluate his options in the portal.

Players at this level want and need to see the field eventually, and some kids need an opportunity to play in order to grow. Rooks fell behind two true freshmen this year--what are the realistic odds he was going to eventually win the job?

In my ideal scenario, kids like Rooks would stay at least three years (redshirt sophomores) and try to get a degree before leaving, but I get why he would leave now.

Seems like a good use of the portal for everyone - Rooks gets a chance to compete for a spot elsewhere and UM has some clarity about depth at tackle.  It sucks to lose him but UM has depth there and can also recruit from the portal for it.  Wish him luck.

MgoBlog is going to have to change the boilerplate in the section "PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE" for Hello posts to something like this:

"Will probably redshirt and bulk up as a freshman and compete for a starting position in his sophomore year. If he doesn't earn a starting role by then, he will probably bail for the portal and try it somewhere else."

Sucks, think he had a shot to contribute next year with Mazi leaving (please stay, Kris), but with Graham, Benny, Grant all already ahead of him and Benny in particular primed for a breakout next year it looks like a tough depth chart situation.  Rooks will have no shortage of suitors.
