Going to Ann arbor - things to do
Don't care about the negativity sans ND game. I wanna watch our beloved team live and go back to the city I loved as an undergrad.
Am taking a good friend with me. What are the best resturaunts and things to do there per this board? Yes I know Zingerman's and things I did as undergrad but wanted to crowdsource opinions for the best time for me friend.
Thanks guys and go blue!

Are you trying to show off the campus? Eat the best food? Get the most drunk? What you want to show your friend impacts what people will suggest.
September 7th, 2018 at 11:24 AM ^
Additionally, if you want to both get the most drunk and eat the best food we will need to know the order in which you wish to do these activities.

Show off campus (I'll show Law quad, the diag, Union, heck even north campus - I was an engineer) + eat and drink. Both.

I always liked the Red Hawk and Dominick's

Yeah a walk through campus the down state st and a right on Hoover is the the best way to get to the game. You can stop for a drink at dominiks between campus and the walk to the stadium. You have to be a foodie to like zingermans because the experience is about way more than just getting a sandwich and the line is too long for a gameday. If you want a sandwich call and order one for pickup Sunday morning.
its a noon game so you are really doing breakfast beforehand. As a student my go to breakfast was afternoon delight but people like other places better. After the game Frita Batidos is great and a great scene but also involves a long line. Ann Arbor has some really good food you’d need reservations for but Ashley’s and red hawk and grizzly peak are all good.

If it's someone that's never been to Ann Arbor...
Pre game: Mr. Spot's.The Diag (For Campus sights). A Street you lived on (For me it was Division & Greenwood) for Game Day Parties.
Post Game: I always head to the North side of Main St. and hit up Jolly Pumpkin, Grizzly Peak, Arbor Brewing (BrewPub).
Just my $0.02

I love Ann arbor brewing company! Will take him there. Thanks for the concise post...really and itinerary.

Skip Zingerman's unless you have $80 for a sandwich and chips.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:05 PM ^
Honestly, Zingerman's is great. BUT, who has time for that line? I used to just head to DiBella's and get something that was CLOSE and be done with it. Then again, I was [and still am?] pretty impatient.

DIMO'S for sandwich's (not quite downtown--but a nice little green old westside walk)
Wolverine Brewing has a great pork nacho dish, and more townie vibe (sorta)

Last time I had Zingerman's was the only time in my life I've had food poisoning. Anecdotal, I know. But, between that, their prices, and the long-ass wait even when you're the only one there, I can't believe people still rave about it.

I'd skip ABC and just hit Ashley's and The Beer Grotto. Fritas for sandwiches (and beer) after a bunch of beer at Beer Grotto is always a good idea.

The Chili's on Washtenaw Ave is one of the best Chili's I've ever been to.

I'm partial to the Black Rock on S. State St.
September 7th, 2018 at 11:37 AM ^
I like to have lunch at Knight's (Liberty and Maynard) on game day. The food is good and for some reason it's not usually that crowded. Also a Michigan cheerleader at the next table spent 30 mins talking to my son the day of the Colorado game. He was pretty excited that his girlfriend was on TV later that day.
Also, if I'm not tailgating I park at the Maynard garage and walk to the stadium. Yeah it's far, but the parking is relatively cheap and I like the walk.

Strongest cocktails in town, too

Tape the game and go camping.
September 7th, 2018 at 11:39 AM ^
Like you did for nd.
September 7th, 2018 at 11:47 AM ^
I didn't tape it. I just youtubed extended highlights. Been wanting to go visit Ann arbor, so thats the bigger motivation. Game is a bonus!

Rick's
September 7th, 2018 at 11:55 AM ^
Maize and Blue, Dominick's, Rick's (if you aren't too old), Law Quad, B-School, South U, Main St. are what I generally do when back in AA.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
How old is too old for Rick's?
Asking for a friend.

Yell at some Trotskyites
September 7th, 2018 at 1:28 PM ^
Pizza Bob's for a shake and chipati
September 7th, 2018 at 12:10 PM ^
Go for a walk around the old favorites early, and then grab a pint of some cheap liquor and a 20oz of Coke and walk around the party scene en route to the game.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:22 PM ^
Frita Batidos. Homes Brewery makes the best beer in town (not very close to campus though). Blank Slate for ice cream, even though it's not gonna be a warm day.
September 7th, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
Can either of you block?
September 7th, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
Brian has a pretty good write-up under the "Useful Stuff" menu, so check that out. Personally, if you're looking for decent pub food and a beer near campus, it's hard to beat Ashley's. That's usually the place I try to get into first when hitting Ann Arbor for gameday, but getting a table can be difficult sometimes.

There is a hotel that used to rent by the hour down near main and depot....maybe get a hooker and take her there with your “friend”.
Memories that would last FOREVER!!

Is penicillin still a thing?
September 7th, 2018 at 2:18 PM ^
Oh...they have way better shit than that. A gram of Zithromax and a shot of rocephin will cover damn near everything!! ‘Cept for Herpes...and who cares about that because you can only get that once!!
September 7th, 2018 at 2:26 PM ^
Are you, me?
September 7th, 2018 at 1:32 PM ^
45-50 minutes before game time, watch the band run out onto Hoover, play The Victors and walk to the game with them. Before that - Dominicks
September 7th, 2018 at 1:33 PM ^
Gameday morning you definitely want to see the drumline performance outside Revelle (sp?) Hall band building near the stadium. They come out before the full band probably around 10:30 for a noon game. There's usually a crowd but you can still get pretty close, and there is even a nice hot dog/hamburger stand right there so you can have your breakfast. Then the band comes out and you can follow them right up to the entrance to the stadium tunnel. Best way to show off the Michigan football tradition.
September 7th, 2018 at 1:58 PM ^
If you want to show him north campus, go to Northside Grill for breakfast before the game. It is a big time gem lots of folks never check out due to location.
September 7th, 2018 at 2:29 PM ^
Can confirm. They don't fuck around. Excellent breakfast.
September 7th, 2018 at 2:37 PM ^
I'd like to piggyback off of this. I am taking my 10 year old to his first game tomorrow. What are some interesting sights/activities for someone that age that we could do before or after the game.
Thanks!

Goin to the city, gonna eat me a lot of peaches
September 7th, 2018 at 8:21 PM ^
If you have a tailgate to go to great, if not head to Hoover Street. There are food trucks (Slows BBQ usually) and craft brews. Beer sales support a cancer support charity so drink up!
