Going to Ann arbor - things to do

Submitted by Mgoczar on

Don't care about the negativity sans ND game. I wanna watch our beloved team live and go back to the city I loved as an undergrad.

Am taking a good friend with me. What are the best resturaunts and things to do there per this board? Yes I know Zingerman's and things I did as undergrad but wanted to crowdsource opinions for the best time for me friend.

Thanks guys and go blue!

Are you trying to show off the campus? Eat the best food? Get the most drunk? What you want to show your friend impacts what people will suggest.

Yeah a walk through campus the down state st and a right on Hoover is the the best way to get to the game. You can stop for a drink at dominiks between campus and the walk to the stadium. You have to be a foodie to like zingermans because the experience is about way more than just getting a sandwich and the line is too long for a gameday. If you want a sandwich call and order one for pickup Sunday morning.

its a noon game so you are really doing breakfast beforehand. As a student my go to breakfast was afternoon delight but people like other places better. After the game Frita Batidos is great and a great scene but also involves a long line. Ann Arbor has some really good food you’d need reservations for but Ashley’s and red hawk and grizzly peak are all good.

If it's someone that's never been to Ann Arbor...

Pre game: Mr. Spot's.The Diag (For Campus sights). A Street you lived on (For me it was Division & Greenwood) for Game Day Parties.

Post Game: I always head to the North side of Main St. and hit up Jolly Pumpkin, Grizzly Peak, Arbor Brewing (BrewPub).

I like to have lunch at Knight's (Liberty and Maynard) on game day.  The food is good and for some reason it's not usually that crowded.  Also a Michigan cheerleader at the next table spent 30 mins talking to my son the day of the Colorado game.  He was pretty excited that his girlfriend was on TV later that day.

Also, if I'm not tailgating I park at the Maynard garage and walk to the stadium.  Yeah it's far, but the parking is relatively cheap and I like the walk.

Go for a walk around the old favorites early, and then grab a pint of some cheap liquor and a 20oz of Coke and walk around the party scene en route to the game.

Frita Batidos. Homes Brewery makes the best beer in town (not very close to campus though). Blank Slate for ice cream, even though it's not gonna be a warm day.

Brian has a pretty good write-up under the "Useful Stuff" menu, so check that out.  Personally, if you're looking for decent pub food and a beer near campus, it's hard to beat Ashley's.  That's usually the place I try to get into first when hitting Ann Arbor for gameday, but getting a table can be difficult sometimes.

There is a hotel that used to rent by the hour down near main and depot....maybe get a hooker and take her there with your “friend”.

Memories that would last FOREVER!!

Gameday morning you definitely want to see the drumline performance outside Revelle (sp?) Hall band building near the stadium. They come out before the full band probably around 10:30 for a noon game. There's usually a crowd but you can still get pretty close, and there is even a nice hot dog/hamburger stand right there so you can have your breakfast. Then the band comes out and you can follow them right up to the entrance to the stadium tunnel. Best way to show off the Michigan football tradition.

I'd like to piggyback off of this. I am taking my 10 year old to his first game tomorrow. What are some interesting sights/activities for someone that age that we could do before or after the game.

Thanks!

If you have a tailgate to go to great, if not head to Hoover Street. There are food trucks (Slows BBQ usually) and craft brews. Beer sales support a cancer support charity so drink up!
