Glad I ain’t that guy (FSU version)

Submitted by Larry Appleton on
Boston Goll Darn College is working FSU to the tune of 21-0 late in the 2Q, and well on the way to dropping the ‘Noles to 2-5. With only 11 games on their schedule, FSU’s odds of even making a bowl game are razor thin. So … it could be a lot worse! BEAT BUTTGERS!

Yep, and they started the season #3 and then lost their starting QB. We've lost our starting QB, our best WR, and also began the year without our would be starting LT. All that plus we returned the fewest starters in Div 1... and we're 5-2 and they'll likely be 2-5 after tonight. The season isn't such a disaster when you really look at it.

Then we get to hear how Harbaugh is such a shit coach and hear how all he is is an attention whore, when it's finebaum amd every other idiot that keeps talking about him just for doing his job. Oh, but Jimbo gets a pass bc he won a title with a stacked Florida recruit roster and a number one overall raw talent at quarterback. I know enough about football that I can easily tell the Dabo's, Jimbo's and even Saban's of the world are enhanced bc the top level southern talent they receive that is in abundance unlike up in Michigan.

right? You act as though he lucked into that roster.  For a HC, one could argue your most important responsibility is to recruit a good roster.  2nd most important or 1b is to hire coaches that can get the most of that roster.  Your ability to help your coaches out with actual coaching is obviously helpful but not necessarily required if you can to the first two tasks well.

There's a pretty big difference between a "roster" and a "starting 11/list of consistent contributors."

Some guys are ready to contribute on gameday starting in week 1 of their freshman year.

Some aren't.

It baffles me how quickly people dismiss legitimate reasons for teams to disappoint or underperform because of some platitude in their minds about what a coach's "job" is, or "getting the most out of your roster", etc.

whipping up and down on FSU last night. And the best division in college football, irrespective of the southern mystagogy, happens to be the one we play in. Time to hit the re-eval button on some of these cliched suppositions.

I live in FL and am aware you've got two football seasons here, how much the game permeates the culture. So when you come back with arguments, let's move beyond those. What FSU faces is something a little like what we face--there used to be just two big football programs in his state, and now there are four or five, each with increasing resources and populations to work from. We're probably beyond big two little eight forever in the B1G. . . .

and until tonight they actually hadn't been that bad.  They were ranked 28th in F/+ rankings which is probably the best tempo-free opponent adjusted ranking out there.  That's only 4 spots behind us.  And of course they lost their QB in the first game.

They've played an absolutely murderous schedule thanks to hurricanes.  Their only non-conference game: Alabama.  No cupcakes to prop up the record.  Before tonight, all their losses in confence were close and to good teams: 6 to NC State, 4 to Miami and 3 to Louisville.

So their record was a lot worse than their quality, and then tonight happened.  Might have just given up it seems like.

I'm not on the ledge like a lot of people, but just because their problems appear to be worse doesn't mean we don't have anything to be concerned about.

I'm not confident we beat them heads up. So, there's that

But he disappeared before that. Imagine if Ulizio got benched every time he gave up a sack. We may have had a serviceable run game from week 1. I know fumbles are real bad mistakes, but it seems the punishment for doing that is more severe than for other drive killing offenses (pun intended).

Yet Speight only missed a series after his second pick-six and O'Korn threw 3 picks against State and they didn't bench him. Ulizio graded out at -7 week after week in UFR and he kept starting.
