Bama played them closer until the end. Michigan wasn’t in the game from the first snap.

There's our guy!
January 11th, 2022 at 2:35 AM ^
Michigan and Bama both have two loses and Bamas is worse. Played Georgia a little closer is a pretty poor metric. Bama does have a better best win.
January 11th, 2022 at 7:27 AM ^
Bama beat #3 and #4. #3 ended up being #1. We’ll end up being #3. We did not look good against GA.
January 11th, 2022 at 7:30 AM ^
I phoned it in after the 1st quarter, pretty much when Corum was caught from behind by a defender twice his size.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:14 AM ^
Anyone but Bama, sucks it’s another SEC team. If GA did this in the SEC championship game this whole playoff could have been different but likely the same result.

Is it legal in Ireland for Frosty's team to outhit others when Nebraska is NOT an Irish team?

This is just like dumping substandard goods into a gullible marketplace. The B1G will be able to sell this show this one time, but I wouldn't look for much repeat business.

Dawgs -3 didn't look good all night until the very end
January 11th, 2022 at 12:35 AM ^
I was so sure of UGA -3 that I doubled down live on UGA to win when they were down 5 points. Georgia looked like the better team for three quarters and if they had a QB that matched their talent profile they probably would've won by 17+ points.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:20 AM ^
They literally didn't do the best with the opportunity they got. They got the opportunity to win the SEC and they didn't.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:25 AM ^
And the record will show, they were not the SEC Champion. Alabama won the SEC Championship fair and square.
But there was nothing fluky about Georgia's National Championship. They beat Michigan and then Alabama convincingly. They are the legitimate National Champions.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:28 AM ^
But Bama beat them even more convincingly the first time and very recently. Is one victory more legit than the other. I don't know. They're tied as far as I'm concerned.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:34 AM ^
I think Georgia will gladly take the national championship trophy over the sec championship trophy.

But yeah..I have nothing on this one. You are so right.

Is one victory more legit than the other.
That's one of the awesome things about football—it's not possible to play 7 game series so luck will always be a factor when two teams that are close in talent play. Look at Tampa Bay's playoff games against Green Bay and the Saints, for example.
Look how much talent it took for Alabama to dominate the last decade and despite that, they still didn't win it all every year. When NBA teams have that type of talent advantage they are almost a lock to win it all (okay, sometimes luck can stab them in the back, too, such as when the Cavs and Raptors beat the Warriors).
Football doesn't try to figure out who the best team is. Sure, the analysts blather on about it endlessly because it provides endless fodder for them to blather about. The only thing football determines is a victor. This is why football does such an excellent job of simulating war, unlike other games that attempt to do the same. It's not like your bishop might tear his ACL, or your knight won't quite be able to complete his L. In football, al victories are legit. They reflect reality, whereas the NBA and MLB models seek an idealistic and unrealistic notion of crowning "the best."
This is also why March Madness > NBA playoffs.
January 11th, 2022 at 3:58 AM ^
That and Alabama lost their best two WRs.
I do wonder how Alabama does if they keep Metchie and/or at least Williams, they combined for 2,600 yards, Williams torched Georgia in the SEC-CG, and both players were Day-2 and Day-1 guys respectively.
It doesn't take away anything from Georgia, their defense is insane and they are a complete team, and a part of winning football is keeping players healthy and on the field.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:26 AM ^
I mean we blew the MSU game too. We just got lucky and lost the "right" game.
January 11th, 2022 at 1:07 PM ^
The opportunity being: going to the playoffs without winning their conference. Didn’t think I needed to explain that
January 11th, 2022 at 12:21 AM ^
And congrats to them. Georgia was the best team in the country this year, and they demonstrated that in the playoff. They earned it.
Very proud for Michigan's squad and what they accomplished this season; and it was a lot. But Georgia was the best team in college football this year. That wasn't handed to them. They earned it.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:25 AM ^
Were they? They got blown out by Bama earlier. Now they evened the series. They were better . . . tonight.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:36 AM ^
Correct, tonight they were better. But that's all that matters though right? Just like Bama was better six weeks ago.
That's just kinda how it works. If Michigan had played MSU 10 times this season, I bet they would have beat them 8 of those 10. Doesn't matter though, the week they actually played MSU won.
I don't think Georgia won either of their CFP matchups on some controversial bullshit. They beat both teams because they were better than them on each particular night. When you can do that against two excellent teams, you've earned it, IMO.
January 11th, 2022 at 7:19 AM ^
There is no series. There was a national championship game. GA won.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:21 AM ^
At least it was not Alabama! Just proves how good of a defense UGA has. The only Alabama TD occurred after a fumble recovery in the red zone.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:25 AM ^
I hope Harbaugh realizes he can win a national championship at Michigan. Those who stay will be champions Jim!!

January 11th, 2022 at 12:32 AM ^
I would have thought you would be more focused on throwing serious milk at them
January 11th, 2022 at 12:30 AM ^
Congrats, UGA. It was a well deserved national championship.
Alabama played UGA tougher than Michigan, for sure. But they had the advantage of being an in-conference foe where the head coaches know each other really well. And they played each other one time before. But some of the plays that Alabama ran that gashed Georgia are not plays that Michigan has really executed in games, like the read option pitch to the RB. Alabama optimized the east/west game and could take advantage because of their speed. We aren't quite there yet. And Bryce Young is better than Cade without a doubt, and ahead of JJ...at this time. On top of that, Alabama's defense has complete NFL level football players at pretty much each of the defensive front 7 spots. Georgia is the same. Michigan just doesn't have the team speed there...yet.
Anyway, it's a long way of saying Michigan did moderately well with what they had to compete against the eventual national champions. But even mighty Alabama succumbed to this UGA juggernaut.
Great season, and I hope the ratings on the game sucked tonight. And sorry for the rambling. Not sure where I was going with all of this.

Only Coach Kirby would call his shot on damaging property in my hometown immediately after hoisting the national championship trophy. ?
January 11th, 2022 at 12:34 AM ^
Did anyone else detect Nick Saban say to Kirby Smart at the end-of-game embrace “they think he’s got an ACL” regarding Jameson Williams? Sure hope not for that young man.

Yes, ? loud and clear
Hopefully he can bounce back like Pickens and countless others within 6 months.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:36 AM ^
It sure looked like an ACL to me. You can still walk on a torn ACL, it just is going to swell up a lot after a while.
January 11th, 2022 at 1:37 AM ^
Clearly an ACL dude also looked like he had giraffe legs running the whole time. It was only a matter of time before that happened.

Phil Mickelson coaches the a college football team too I guess, heh. My kids just loved him in Disney Channel's "The Jersey"
January 11th, 2022 at 12:34 AM ^
This one feels a little unsatisfactory as a fan of the game. Are these the two best teams? Yes, without question Bama and Georgia are superior to everyone else this year. However, they split the games they played. One game just had a different title. A team that finished second in the SEC won the NC. If Georgia and Bama play 100 times, I’m guessing it would cut somewhere 55-45 either way. After this year, I’m in favor of a Conference Championship requirement to be in the 4 team playoff. The reason that won’t happen is because ESPN/ SEC won’t let it happen as they are the only conference that will ever have two teams in.
January 11th, 2022 at 1:21 AM ^
Call me old fashioned, but I don't think this is was as entertaining or enjoyable as the old way, where bowl games were non-conference, intersectional games of fairly evenly matched opponents. If we had to argue about who the better team for the next seven or eight months, so what?
January 11th, 2022 at 1:39 AM ^
Just make the playoff 16 teams and eliminate major bowl game all together. Also a single elimination tournament doesn’t always yield the true result.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:36 AM ^
I'm no fan of UGa or Kirby Smart - but I'm happy anytime someone other than 'bama, osu or clemson wins the championship.
New blood is a good thing - Georgia hadn't won the thing since 1980. Congrats to them.
January 11th, 2022 at 12:55 AM ^
I'll take a small Wolverine victory here by noting effing Bama only managed one touchdown vs this nut case of a Bulldog defense. We also manged just one td. We got beat vs a better team. I'm still proud of our season.
Keep building the roster, negotiate with the university for better transfer portal and NIL opportunities and on a near- future, meant to be night, Harbaugh can win a Natty.
If anything, this season brought back my Wolverine pride and optimism.
January 11th, 2022 at 1:02 AM ^
We were the only team to beat Georgia in the second half all year.
So, um, there's that.
