Sorry, but when I heard Karsch, I was immediately surprised that he got the job. He doesn’t have the voice and his descriptive abilities aren’t much better. After this year’s OSU game, someone posted highlights that featured their announcing team, and their guy is great. He sounded like the kind of announcer I would’ve expected Michigan’s broadcaster would’ve hired.

It's unbelievable how pathetic ESPN is with that shit.

I don't love Fox as a company, but damn their college football and World Cup broadcasts are far better than anything anyone else puts out there. They actually act like we're in 2022 and have the capability to broadcast in 4k...

Even the damn superb owl wasn't in 4k last year because it was on ABC. But this year, it's on Fox and it will be (as it obviously, absolutely should).

As a heads up, the "broadcast" part that Fox did for the World Cup was the studio show and the commentary. Which, not coincidentally, were the worst parts of the US broadcast of the World Cup. The in-stadium cameras, game production, replays, etc. that was all "world feed" and produced by FIFA for the whole world to share.

I agree with your basic point that this game should be native 4k. Seems like a given in 2022. But also there were networks still broadcasting SD shows (CBS / Big Brother) as late as 2013. So, I don't put it past a broadcast network to penny pinch when having to upgrade their broadcast production. Surprised they're pinching on this level tho.

Karsch seems like a good dude, but his voice sucksssssssss.  I'm guessing we'll have to listen to him for a long time though right?   I miss Frank Beckman. Too bad we had to run him out of town for the fried chicken comment and now he's dead.  Got dang his voice had a exactly what Karsch is missing in the higher octaves while still being gravely and distinct.

I agree, Karsch’s voice is NOT suitable for announcing. It squeaks and cuts out when he gets excited. It’s so bad.
Man, I really miss Frank Beckmann. What an amazing voice. And when HE got fired up, hoo boy, it got YOU fired up!!

Why in the hell did they give the job to Karsch? A safe, lazy choice IMO.

I don't want to say voices are overrated, but ... it's also possible to get used to "our guy." I personally couldn't stand Bob Ufer's incoherent screaming -- nor his phenomenally consistent ability to not actually know what was happening on the field. But he's "beloved" by the Michigan fan base.

Nobody -- no announcer of any team anywhere, so help me God -- knows more about the team he's describing, its history, its traditions, and the passion/dedication of its fans, than Karsch does. His voice isn't ideal, no doubt, but ... screw it. He's one of ours, and he's WAY better than Brandstetter, so ... I'm a fan.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the only Michigan fan alive that has heard Bob Ufer and doesn't love him.  DennisFranklinDaMan, folks!

LOL!! Incoherent screaming...  You knew exactly how the offense was aligned, where the ball was going, who had it, how far a pass went, and who tackled.  You always knew the down and distance, clock time, play time, and whether it was a 'routine' play, a good play, or something spectacular.  In every down moment there was a story to keep you entertained.  He may not have been the classically trained PBP guy that maintained composure, and I'm sure his over the top raging homer-ism pissed off a few opponents.  But he is responsible for creating more Michigan fans than any alumni could ever hope for.

Do they still do the coaches room for these games? That’d be something cool to record and go back and watch.

edit: for those who don’t know the coaches room is a room of 4-6 college coaches watching the live broadcast and breaking it down live, rewinding plays, so on.

I always synchronize the game to UM radio. I'll watch the TV feed after the fact.

A great Karsch call on Loveland's 1st TD catch, paraphrasing, touchdown from last year's co-MVP of the Idaho Sawtooth Central Football Conference :)
