The Game - 4K Options?

Submitted by macgoblue10 on November 22nd, 2022 at 4:47 PM

Direct TV does not appear to be offering The Game Saturday in 4K. The 4K channels have been filled with World Cup instead.

Anyone know how to view in 4K with DIRECTV or other options? Go Blue!

YouTube TV offers 4k, and I believe The Game is being broadcast in 4k on Fox Sports.  FuboTV might offer the same, and there is a free trial available with them.

I double checked this and Youtube TV does show that the game is being streamed in 4K.

Note: You'll need an additional $20 subscription on top of standard Youtube TV. I've also had issues with very bad lag / skipping when trying to stream Youtube TV in 4K (I have 1Gb fiber internet so that's not the issue). I'd say don't even try it if you're using the built in apps in your smart tv, both my Vizio and Samsung smart tv's skipped so much it's infuriating. Using a Google TV works better, but there are still occasional skips that aren't present in standard HD. I've heard that using the Fox Sports App works better, but have yet to try it.

If you watch it directly through the Fox Sports app, you can watch in 4k. It will ask who your normal provider is, but that hasn't affected me before.

FuboTV maintains a rotating list of upcoming 4K games and The Game is on it. Just make sure the trial package includes 4K.

Anyone have thoughts on YouTube vs Fubo's 4K quality? Random People on Reddit say YouTubeTV is better image quality than FuboTV, but I trust random people on this corner of the internet more. (I know it's all upscaled from 1080p anyway.)

I have yet to try Fubo TV, but have had issues with the 4K quality of Youtube TV. Biggest issue has been skipping, especially if using the built in smart tv apps. It seems they do not have enough processing power. Using a chromecast w/ Google TV has worked a bit better for me, but it still skips occasionally. I also tried watching a feed the other day and it was very washed out looking.

I've heard that using the Fox Sports App may fix these issues, but I haven't tried it yet. You can log into it with your Youtube Tv or Fubo credentials and it should be the same experience for each.

I have watched several games that are broadcast on FOX in 4K.  I have a 4K TV and a 4K Apple TV box.  I stream it through the FOX Sports app signed in to TV provider.  Be sure and select the 4K broadcast of the game.  I think if you are just watching the pre-game and it rolls over to the game, it might not be in 4K.

It is a noticeable difference.  The bigger the TV, the better it is to watch in 4K.

FIOS cable usually carries the FOX 4K feed but as of right now, the guide isn't showing it available. Looks like it may have been bumped by World Cup too.

Bet the 4K on the run heavy road team.

But seriously the first response was correct, you can get a free month of 4K on YTTV. I've been saving this deal all year and now is the time to take advantage.

Easy peasy. Fox broadcasts over the air in 4K. So just use broadcast, and stay away from Cable or Direct TV or any of those things. That's how I'll be viewing in 4K.

Because broadcast isn't dependent on any wires or fiber optic, there is absolutely no reason not to broadcast in 4K. So many if not most of the sports TV and movies I watch on CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, and Fox are in 4K.

Fox Sports app will have 4K. However, I tried their World Cup stream for Team USA yesterday and it was AWFUL. The 720p/1080i (whatever fox uses) was much better.

I'm 50+ and still have VCR tapes (and a VCR to play them on) and old DVD-Rs of 1990's and early 2000's Michigan games so I understand. I agree even the average production value now vastly exceeds the older era... but a 4K HDR signal still shows a "pop" that noticeable over the standard 1080p production.

Then again, i still buy physical media because the higher bit-rate outshines the streaming equivalent.

I have a 1080p projector. When watching, YouTube TV seems to be 720p. At that scale, 1080p would be nice. Does the Fox Sports app default to that when you aren't hooked up to a 4k TV?

Just sat down and did a little test. Looks like my preferred streaming device (Xbox One) defaults to 720p, no other options. Switching to a Chromecast 4k, picture looks a little sharper. More definition around the details. Maybe that's the move for me. Might see what other devices I have around that might improve the experience...
