Freep: Harbaugh waiting to see if NFL teams make offers
According to the Free Press, Harbaugh is waiting to see if the Jets or Chargers make an offer before signing a multi-year extension with Michigan.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:56 PM ^
We already know what he’s doing. An extension is on the table. Harbaugh either can sign it, or he can walk to the NFL. It’s up to him how he decides to handle that. He can sign with Michigan and end it, or he can wait and see what he gets in terms of NFL offers and pick his route. There is nothing Warde can say that changes any of that. It’s literally a waiting game at this point. That much is clear.
What we DON’T need is conflicting media reports of Harbaugh about to sign and Harbaugh waiting to see what the NFL offers.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:17 PM ^
I don't know that he has put an offer on the table or not. He has not publicly stated it either way. All of the info. we are debating is from "sources". Warde needs to step forward and clear it up. That is his job.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:24 PM ^
But we do know an extension has been put on the table. EVERY source has confirmed as much, while details may be being negotiated. The extension offer exists. We don’t need a statement from Warde explaining every minute detail of what is going on. It isn’t our business. It doesn’t happen at any school or team at any level of sports. Fans aren’t privy to contract negotiation details.
But again, we also don’t need conflicting reports from the media citing soft sources without confirmation either. Which is ultimately all we’ve been getting
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:19 PM ^
Ward could have actually fired him over a month ago or put a due date on signing the extension and not give Jim Harbaugh all the power to determine Michigan's fate and possibly miss out on coaching candidates. He's putting Harbaugh's career before the program.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:44 PM ^
Bingo!!! Harbaugh could drag this out, bolt to the NFL, and leave Michigan in a mess (all decent coaching candidates have moved on). Not that he will, but he shouldn’t have all the power in this situation.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:28 PM ^
But he’s not, and the top candidates are all still available and I’m sure Warde has put feelers out to gauge interest in the job to those candidates should it come open.
Everyone wants to act like we’re in some late stage of the coaching carousel. Most of the time coaches coach in a bowl game and are then let go. Bowl season is still going. This isn’t the MSU-Mel Tucker timeline we’re looking at. It’s January 2nd. Calm down.

What else are we supposed to do? It's the off-season... for us anyway.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:01 PM ^
It fits what (little) we know so far.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:05 PM ^
Please NFL, save us! You're our only hope!

Please do the right thing and drop the bag for Matt Campbell.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:05 PM ^
Campbell seems like a good guy... is this who we want? Or Hafley? I say Hafley, and have a rivalry with two former guys who coached together on OSU.

By tomorrow?
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:13 PM ^
According to MLive, Harbaugh all but signed with Michigan for 5 years:

Isn’t that the Feldman report?
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:54 PM ^
It’s been “close” ever since Balas and Bacon were talking about it a damn month ago. Manuel does not give two shits about the publics perception of him. This is like a month long press conference where he doesn’t say anything except flip us the bird.

The Freep - always a reliable source of information
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:30 PM ^
He would know by now if he is getting a significant NFL offer.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:32 PM ^
This report i believe. I think he's waiting till Monday to see what else might be available before he signs any extension.
If the rumors are true that he's been offered a paycut my guess is that's a pretty bitter pill to swallow for a guy like Harbaugh-even with his less than stellar results to date.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:37 PM ^
As the Freep's higher education reporter, this guy's source is likely someone like a regent. I would put more faith in Feldman and Angelique, who likely have sources that are closer to the situation.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:30 PM ^
How are they in conflict tho? An extension could've been worked out (Feldman report) but not signed yet (Freep report).
I don't see how both stories can't be true right now.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:43 PM ^
I can't believe they let this guy even post this article without someone else closer collaborating on it.
But hey clicks!
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:38 PM ^
Think I’ll believe Feldman, Angelique, and Baumgardner over the Freep.

I want matt campbell. This program is a dumpster fire going on year 7
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:52 PM ^
What was it after RR and Hoke, then?
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:59 PM ^
A dumpster fire. It’s come full circle.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:16 PM ^
If this is a dumpster fire, then what was concussion-gate, 3-9, 5-7, App St followed up by Oregon, apologizing to MSU to planting a stake in their turf, losing to a 7 win OSU team in their coach's first season while ranked 11th in the country, etc?
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:41 PM ^
Well, 2-4 -- which would have ended up as 3-6 or 2-7 depending on the Iowa game -- seems pretty similar to 3-9, 5-7, et cetera.
Our AD publicly rooting for our main rival to go to the CFP with all the positivity that brings them is pretty similar to apologizing to MSU.
No concussion-gate, but we did leave Cade out there when he had no business out there.
So yeah, this is a dumpster fire too. Our AD should not be contemplating extending it.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:48 PM ^
If it was a full season, Ambry and Nico (maybe even McCaffrey)would've played. How many points does that swing in the MSU game? Since that's the real root of all the bitching about this truncated season. How does the development of the younger players change with warm up games.
January 2nd, 2021 at 11:13 PM ^
Keep playing the if game all you want. Every team every season has players get hurt for periods of time.
January 2nd, 2021 at 11:25 PM ^
Like the if game you always play with Campbell scenarios?
January 3rd, 2021 at 12:32 AM ^
What if game is that? Campbell's results speak for themselves.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:43 PM ^
This amazes me. I could not imagine going to an employer and saying, “Hey...I know you offered me that extension...and I realize things haven’t been great recently...and I realize I’ve put the company in a pretty bad position during a major strategic period for our growth and trajectory...and i know you’ve been really good to me, treated me well, and compensated me better than ever...BUT I am kinda interested in going back to my old industry. It pays pretty good too, and I get to live in some cool cities! But - hey - if I don’t get a better offer from them, I’ll totally re-sign with you guys! Just let me check with them first and I’ll get back to you! Mmmmkay...thanks!”
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:57 PM ^
Same things works for any MLB starting pitcher with an ERA of 4.25 or better.
Turns out in some fields 'not elite but still decent' is actually a rare enough skillset to have all kinds of bargaining power.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:11 PM ^
Sounds 100% reasonable. It's business. But I don't believe he has any interest in going to the Jets.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:20 PM ^
Chargers, all the way... Lions are the plan B.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:46 PM ^
Next by the Freep, Jim Harbaugh will be the next football coach at the University of Michigan to replace Brady Hoke.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:55 PM ^
There is no way that Jim Harbaugh willingly leaves Michigan at this point in his tenure. There is also no way that Jim Harbaugh handles a contract discussion with his alma mater in this fashion. Anybody that truly knows Jim Harbaugh knows this.
Say what you will about his coaching and performance since he has been at Michigan, but the man’s integrity, honor, and love for his school cannot be questioned.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:06 PM ^
Didn't he shit all over our academics when he was at Stanford?
Losing changes people's beliefs
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:41 PM ^
He is not at Stanford. He is at Michigan now. He has never nor will he ever negotiate in this manner. The man’s integrity has always been above approach.
Those rooting for a specific outcome should not be slandering the man to further their goals. Not cool.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:34 PM ^
?Found Jack Harbaugh's account
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:07 PM ^
He has only one year left... he and Warde will do whats best for the program, and that might include leaving now, knowing he won't coach here after his contract expires....
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:44 PM ^
If you believe that he is gone or should be gone, fine. I have no proof otherwise. But to say that JJH would negotiate with Michigan like this. That is not right.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:06 PM ^
You do realize that Bo negotiated similarly with Canham, using Texas A&M as the leverage, right?
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:03 PM ^
Then what in living fuck is taking so long? Sign the extension or fucking resign
January 3rd, 2021 at 5:23 PM ^
Just because you are in a hurry does not mean Harbaugh or Manuel are in the same hurry. There are $8 million reasons why Manuel is willing to wait, and JH may well have reasons related to assistants and other items we are not aware of yet. Patience is called for here, we should know far more tomorrow.
January 2nd, 2021 at 10:29 PM ^
Oh, please. He's a weird guy. Maybe he feels unwelcome or it's just time to go. And the timing is unmistakeable -- you think it just so happens he's waiting to sign a completed contract offer until the day after the NFL's regular season ends? You really think that's a coincidence? You're a very naive person.
January 2nd, 2021 at 8:57 PM ^
“Harbaugh hasn't signed it yet because he's waiting to see if any NFL teams have interest in him as a head coach.”
If he stays and this is verified, how do you support a coach who puts Michigan as his back-up and an AD who knowingly tolerated it? Being loyal to a coach who had one foot out the door over the program itself? Surely, this can’t be true.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:08 PM ^
He has been here awhile, and this is how these things end... if you look at all the smoke lately, its quite clear, especially the top players all going to the NFL.
January 2nd, 2021 at 9:13 PM ^
Because that's how every coach in football operates. It's simple negotiation. When you graduate, consider using other offers as leverage.
