Fourth of July Weekend Drinking/Grilling Thread

Submitted by tylers48 on

Subject pretty much sums it up. What does everyone have planned for the weekend? Awesome forecast for those of us lucky enough to be spending it in Michigan.

Bell's Oatsmobile. I think this is a new one because I had never heard of it before, but it's pretty darn good, especially if you're drinking all day. On a similar note, I discovered that the Meijer on Jackson and Zeeb has one of the best beer selections in the area. Cheers.

Lots of yard work today and tomorrow, have to make it look nice(r) for he guests on Monday. Just grilling and drinking on the fourth. Burgers, brats and dogs. On tap is Yuengling. Went down to Ohio for a family reunion a couple weeks ago. Bought a case then just for this weekend. Anyone know why they don't sell it in Michigan? It's not the best beer ever made or anything, but it's a family thing for me, so I always enjoy it.

I think states and local jurisdictions (like counties, at least in Maryland) control the distribution. That may be why it's tough to get a certain thing. That said, holding out for Yuengling is like waiting with bated breath for Bud Light. I live in suburban DC area and I can't easily get Bell's but Yuengling is plentiful, blech.

Make this for guests, and you'll be known as Chef  Boyardee ...

Colonel’s Barbeque

Ingredients                                                                                      Alternative Recipe

·   1/4 cup soy sauce                                                                 ¼ cup soy sauce

·     3 tablespoons honey                                                          3 Tablespoons honey

·     2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar                              2 Tablespoons Red Wine                                                                                                                      Vinegar

·     1/2 teaspoon ground ginger                                              1 ½ Teaspoon Ground Ginger

·         1/2 teaspoon garlic powder                                             1 ½ Teaspoons Garlic Salt

·         1/2 cup vegetable oil                                                          ½ cup vegetable oil

·         1 ½ - 2 pounds flank steak                                                 1 ¾ - 2 lbs Flank Steak

Directions

  1. In a blender, combine the soy sauce, honey, vinegar, ginger, garlic powder/salt, and vegetable oil.
  2. Lay steak in a shallow glass or ceramic dish. Pierce both sides of the steak with a sharp fork. Pour marinade over steak, then turn and coat the other side. Cover, and refrigerate 8 hours, overnight, or for 24 hours.
  3. Preheat grill for high heat.
  4. Place grate on highest level, and brush lightly with oil. Place steaks on the grill, and discard marinade – or pour on the steak to create a smoky flavor. Grill steak with the lid down for 10 minutes (5 min each side turning once) or to desired doneness.  Cooking for 5 min each side will produce medium cooked steak on the ends, and medium-rare in the middle.
  5. Cut meat into 1/4-3/8 inch strips.

Nice catch! I was cognizant of that post as I replied in this thread. You'd have been a formidable contestant on Concentration. I love meat, and ethically speaking have nothing against its consumption, but I believe a high-nutrient vegetarian diet is best for optimum health. I (now) try to eat as vegan and wheat-less as possible. I will still grill/smoke meat for the family. Will. Power. Pull up a chair... I originally went V cuz I refused drugs to manage the type-two diabetic high blood sugar result of my shitty diet. I reversed the disease, lost weight, never felt better. I then fell off the V-wagon, blah blah regressed, and recently climbed back on that wagon. Watch the documentary Forks Over Knives (Netflix I think). Life changing stuff everyone should at least be aware of. Sorry for the tl;dr, TMI soapbox, but to defend my honor, and be true to the stereotype depicted in the post to which I snarkily replied (your exhibit-A above), I had no choice.

like that, so kudos to you.  i hope you keep off of all the T-2 diabetes drugs.

we farm, and i'm with you on healthy food.  we raise/process all of our own beef, lamb, chicken, corn/wheat, dairy and eggs, grass feed our livestock, and we don't have pesticides, herbicides, vaccines, etc. on the farm.   that said, you might unfortunately be surprised what they do to all of your veggies.  keep the faith and don't forget to have some animal protein - lean meat, no drugs (for the livestock), in moderation is ideal for most folks' health.

and always regularly exercise.

Vodka and orange juice.  Lots of it this afternoon.  A sentimental favorite.  First thing I ever got drunk on.  While camping on the Muskegon River when I was 9.

Beautiful weather in northern MI. Started the day with golf. Got home and fired up the smoker for ribs and now floating on the lake. Coors Light/lake beer weekend, but the Sailor Jerry will be coming out later.

Never had so many drop from the one damn pine tree we have along side our driveway. Got here last night and there were pine cones everywhere. Contemplating cutting that bastard down while drinking a Brickstone Forbidden Wheat sitting on the deck overlooking Lake Huron. Much calmer now. Time for round 2. Maybe a nice Lakefront Brewery Maibock this time around. Dinner is at nice local restaurant up the shore from here. Tomorrow is grill day.

New Mexico to see my wife's family. They have a big farm and there will be four wheelers, a zombie shooting course , and boating on the Pecos river.

RV trip in the Black Hills. Wouldn't drink anything but Bud for this occasion. Bison burgers on the grill at my KOA for the night

I would foil that sucker for the last couple hours.  I've done a few briskets over the years and foiling it seems to keep it juicy.  The last one I didn't foil turned out like a football.  Here's a mop sauce recipe to that I just love with brisket and pork-butt:

1 cup distilled vinegar

1 cup beer

1 tbs garlic salt,

1tbs brown sugar

1 tsp red pepper flakes

1 tsp black pepper
