Footballscoop: Don't Bother Reading This
[Edit] Brian has addressed this post on the main page as well as on Twitter, sounds like most of this report is bunk. I posted it because Scott Roussel is typically pretty reliable, I'm glad it looks like he's at least partly wrong in this instance.
Viva Harbaugh!

turn my tix in. Greg Schiano would be a complete fucking disaster here.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:30 AM ^
As discussed whe his name came up a few weeks ago, his job at Rutgers was outstanding. That is a simple matter of record. His job at Tampa as awful, that too is true. But there are many examples of excellent college coaches failing in the NFL, Holtz for one. Schiano is well down my list of preferences, but anyone saying he is a bad coach simply doesn't know what they are talking about.

Schaino's record at Rutgers was .500. He had one flash in the pan year a decade ago then went 6-6 every other year.

The idea that Harbaugh was coming was always a farfetched idea. I work with gentlemen who has known the Harbaughs for a long time and he thought it wasn't going to happen.

Now gearing up for a protracted roller coaster of a search.

If true, this is terrible news. Les Miles needs to be the coach if Harbaugh is not a candidate. We are assuming Carr is the ring leader of the "no Les to Michigan" campaign, and if so, he needs to GTFO. He's hurting the program by doing this.

He has plenty of friends around that already had their opinion of Miles. They don't need any prompting from Lloyd or anyone else to share them.

The media is being played like a violin. This is a very complex negotiation with a lot of moving parts.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:12 AM ^
First and foremost, I hope these "sources" are not true.
But if they are, wow. Talk about deja vu. If the Michigan administration fails to bring home Les because some people within the AD have a petty grudge against him (ie. Carr cronies), then this University gets whatever it deserves. You have a top flight coach who wants to come here, and we can't get the deal done because of some people's "feelings." Makes me sick. This should not be that hard.

BREAKING NEWS: It's almost lunch time.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:14 AM ^
This report suggested that Michigan may be inclined to hire someone outside of Michigan. If this is the case would anyone actually consider coming to Michigan, considering the outlash and fire RR took?
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:14 AM ^
Unless Harbaugh wanted his current team to quit on him now, or he intended to quit on his team now, of course this is the message he and everyone is putting out. I would put more stock in this report if the 49ers season was over. For now, it's just another fart in the wind.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:14 AM ^
Listen people, unless the prime target just falls in your lap because he's out of a job (like Urban Meyer), or is in an obvious situation where he would be looking to move up in the coaching world (like Charlie Strong) a coaching search isn't as simple as just pointing at a guy and saying "I'll take him."
At the end of the day, we're going to be in a better position after hiring a new coach than we are today, assuming we hire someone with a proven track record and give him the unconditional support of the administration. Basically if we combine what we did in the last two coaching searches.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:18 AM ^
I get what you're saying, but it's funny to read "combine what we did in the last two coaching searches" considering the last two coaching searches are why we're even in this mess to begin with.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:16 AM ^
There's going to be articles saying Harbaugh isn't coming and articles saying he is coming everyday for the next month so I'm not concerned. If the part about Les Miles is true then those people need to be fired from the Athletic department ASAP.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:16 AM ^
Sounds like even if MIchigan does hire Miles there will be a faction in the athletic department that wants him to fail and be gone. We know how that worked out last time.

Now I know this is a little crazy, but hear me out. I think we might actually have a better shot at landing John instead of Jim.
1- He has already won a Super Bowl. There is nothing left for him to accomplish in the NFL, unless he wants another ring. And speaking of that ring, has anyone seen the inscription inside the band? The Team The Team The Team. So the guy obviously has some affection for Michigan Football (or at least for Bo).
2- When he was asked about taking the Michigan job a few months ago, he didn't outright deny it. In fact, his statement seemed to leave the door open quite a bit. I'm paraphrasing but it was something to the effect of "I won't pursue that job while my friend Brady Hoke is the coach".
So maybe Jim stays in the NFL until he gets his ring, and John comes here to beat the ever loving crap out of sparty and urbs.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:32 AM ^
I don't think winning one SB translates to "nothing left to accomplish in the NFL" for any coach. SB winners (players and coaches) usually say it just makes them want to win the 2nd one that much more.
The only time "well, I already got one" seems to be in play is for retirement talk or when the other option is a near equal dream/desire. I don't get think John has ever really talked about coaching in college since he got to the NFL...and why would he while he's young and successful?
December 2nd, 2014 at 12:01 PM ^
would make sense if he viewed coaching Michigan, as opposed to any other college program, to be on par with coaching in the NFL.
The opportunity for glory is great at Michigan. Yost has been dead for 70 years and fans still march to his grave every November.
A long term, successful coach at Michigan would be remembered as long as the University stands.
Just my two cents.
December 4th, 2014 at 10:44 AM ^
That's a good 2 cents. I agree with the point, but have never heard/read about John thinking along these lines at all. It could be he does, or would, but I think this is mostly wishful thinking by fans.
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:18 AM ^
Of course it would be nice to have Harbaugh. But a definitive "no" now keeps us from pissing away weeks wondering whether he would leave the NFL to come coach here. So I'm choosing to view this as "goat rodeo avoided". Again, if true.
Assuming Hoke is let go, I think there are other suitable candidates out there who would like the job. We'll be OK.

Am i the only one that took a bit of good news out of this?
"Multiple sources we spoke with feel Michigan will ultimately wind up going “outside the family” for their next head coach."
our family is obviously disfunctional and not capable so let's clean house
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:26 AM ^
I actually agree with you quite a bit. It's like, "Oh no, we have to broaden our search to highly qualified individuals such as Jim McElwain, Dan Mullen, or Tom Herman. What hell hath you brought?"
December 2nd, 2014 at 11:19 AM ^
One of two things is going to happen...
1. You'll hear Michigan insiders start trickling out that he is not as interested as people might have earlier thought very soon
2. You will hear the 'status quo' or even a refutation of the football scoop article...
We'll see. It's sometimes tough to understand how much of the pessimism about Harbaugh is that he's not interested vs. a lot of these sources being 'NFL sources' with a bias towards the league.
