Football Every Day Posbang / Halloween recap

Submitted by Blueblood2991 on

With MACtion returning on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, there is football on TV every day from now until November 28th. This obviously includes NFL on Sundays and Mondays. Say what you will about the NFL, MAC football, and the crappy December bowl games, but I always find myself wishing I had watched more once the offseason hits. Soak it in folks.

Western starts it off tonight at 8pm on ESPN2.

Slow morning at work. Everyone seems to be hungover or in a sugar coma. Anyone have any good Halloween stories to share from either last night or the weekend?

I saw this on the interwebs:

Sports broadcaster Joe Buck lavishes so much praise on 23-year-old Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Schwarber during this year’s World Series, it prompted one fan to open up a wedding registry for the two at Bed Bath and Beyond.

My wife timed it Sunday night.  For 17 straight minutes in the botom of the 8th innining the Fox broadcasters spoke about the Cubs and the Cubs alone.  Every camera shot was of the Cubs (unless the Indians made a play in the field) and every discussion was about the Cubs.  Go back and listen to his end of the game call in game 3 (1-0 nailbiter) and it's a staight up "indians win and have regained home field advantadge".  Zero emotion.

Then listen to his end of game call Sunday night.  "CUBS WIN....CUBS WIN...CUBS WIN!"  He was so excited it was actually funny given it was only game 5 and they were still down 3-2.

Oh well - as Lebron put it so well last Tuesday night during the Cavs champtionship ring ceremony "it's Cleveland versus the world."

last year about half way through the season.  ESPN wanted to call off the NBA tournament and just hand the trophy out.

Same with the Cubs this year.  They typically start out fast and have a great record in June.  Then the World Series talk begins in earnest.  Since they didn't fold by August, they are sure to win it all this year (after all, it's only fair).

I'm looking for Cleveland to do the the "Cubbies" what they did to the Warriors.

Interesting question on who was "right" last week.  While we dominated the game (or at least the first 3 quarters anyways) the final score sure didnt look like it.

Boy was everything in my power to not post an "i told you so" thread after State's first drive that's for sure.

After State's first drive, I was befuddled,I did not expect them to come out and drive it down our throats. Brown staying in base defense the whole drive (was he trying to figure out how little tricks he could use to get pressure?) was a bit annoying, I wanted pressure right out of the gate. Also, the Delano Hill penalty flag was a poor choice. This drive was the only drive I thought MSU was dominate the entire game.

The 4th quarter was an interesting mix of Staee playing to make it close (I dispute that this game was ever in jeopardy for us) and Michigan setting the cruise control. In the Baumgardner article, he said "you have to tackle for 60 minutes", I couldn't agree more. Thought the boys took bad angles and figure if they blew on Scott he would fall over, far from it in fact. The skipped completion to Price didn't help our cause, should have been 4th and 15 instead of 4th and 5.

I have to give credit where credit is due, it was a dominant win, but not dominant in the fashion that I hoped for. So, you were right. I'm hopeful they learn from this performance and realize nothing is promised and continue to put the pedal to the floor. I wonder how much of this was Harbaugh trying to impose his will by running up the gut and trying to break State's spirit, or toughening up his defense for the games ahead.

I've literally watched almost 50 years of us playing MSU.  One of my earliest football memories in fact is seeing my dad and brother all pissed off back in 1969 after our new coach Bo Schembechler lost his first game to the Spartans and over the years I've come to accept a few things about the rivalry:

1. MSU will save plays and formations exclusively for the Michigan game.

2. MSU would rather go 1-10 with the only win over Michigan than 10-1 with the only loss being to Michigan

3. That wierd shit happens during these games (officiating, clock, etc) and almost always goes agains Michigan

4. Most if not all of their players have a major chip on their shoulder from not being considered "good enough" to play for Michigan (that's changed somewhat lately though)

5. And finally, while they may not always get our best effort (see 4th quarter last Saturday) we always get theirs.  And that can sometimes overcome the usual talent gap between the two schools.

Anyways on to Maryland.   I think Mr Durkin needs to be reminded that his effort in the OSU game last year was not forgotten.....

We live on a street that is shut down for Halloween. Most houses have parties, and kids come in from everywhere to trick-or-treat.

This year wasn't as crazy as last year, but we had at least 1600 kids come by before we ran out of candy around 8:30. The two best costumes I saw were Dark Helmet and a burning Galaxy Note 7.

Learned that there are some seriously attractive women living in my neighborhood. More than I expected anyway. Might be time to trade up. Kids did very well with their candy haul.

For me this year. I decided to enjoy the day by doing nothing while a) I have no kids and b) I live in an apartment. As for football every day, that's cool. I'll switch on MACtion if it's a close game and/or exciting and/or WMU and/or EMU looking for bowl eligibility.

Above all else, I'm really looking forward to Thanksgiving - now THAT'S a holiday!

happened to all the kids in my area, understandably my sub-division is accessed of a main road, so it makes sense that kids wouldn't walk to it. However, the back side of the sub is easily accessed (I know that's weird string of words, I couldn't figure out how to make it any better) from other neighborhoods and streets. We didn't hand out too much candy, I have an entire Sam's Club size bag that I will work until probably the new year. My little one is too young for trick or treating, or else the haul could have been better. I more of a fan of sour candies anyways compared to chocolate.

or treating on a Monday is literally the worst day that it can fall on.  I am sure some people skipped it, and I know a couple of people personally that just hit a couple of houses and then mailed it in.  Not only do parents and kids have to go to work and school the next day, but they have to go the next four days.  Especially for kids, it is kind of unfair.  It is literally one hour per year that is supposed to be devoted to an entirely child-driven activity and having it on a Monday night is absurd.  Part of Halloween is the after-trick or treating play time with friends, neighbors, etc., and that just does not happen on a Monday.

There is a fairly loud outcry this year to move Halloween to the last Saturday in October.  It's not like the Holiday celebrates a specific moment that occured (allegedly) on a certain date or has to be on a specific date to signify something (New Years Day).  It is more Labor-dayish.  Move it to when it makes sense and have it on a Saturday every year.

Yea let's have it on a Saturday every year so I can miss even more college football!

Let loose on a Monday night, or whatever day it falls on! It's not that big of a deal. I don't see how trick or treating and staying up later one night ruins the rest of anyones week.

you have kids?

The holiday and your perception of "a week" consists of changes quite a bit when you do.  You go ahead and "cut loose" if you want, by my alarm goes off at 4:45 AM regarless so it is not an option for me.

The actual act of trick or treating takes about an hour, you don't miss much college football and it can be worked into the day quite nicely because people will have radios on and even tailgates set up outside.  And there are Saturdays like last year, when you come home to a 7 or 8 O'Clock game and it just makes the holiday even better.

[Edit, I see below that you do have kids.  Hmm, your response surprise me a little bit.  I guess I don't see how having on the last Saturday in October presents that much of a logistical problem.  I see it as a solid move].

are you so defensive about halloween, brah?  I edited once I saw you had kids.  Congrats on being the most awesome, care free, cut-loose-on-a-Monday and WHO CARES-badass dad alive.

It was just a suggestion and not just mine.  Quite a few people kind of see how having Halloween on a Monday pretty much sucks for all parties involved, parents, kids, and teachers, and are discussing whether it really makes sense.

I'm not the one saying it's a stand alone Hallmark holiday.  It would be pretty hard to have it float dates when the only reason it exists is All Saints Day.  Whether that is how it is celebrated these days or not, I don't think it would be a simple thing to move the dates.
