Why do Detroit teams (except for the Red Wings) always end up hiring shitty coaches? Who in their right mind thought the Tigers could win a WS with Brad Ausmus? How about the Lions hiring Jim Caldwell... yep this Jim Caldwell. Don't get me started on the Pistons, wasted away chances to win another title by hiring Flip f'n Saunders.

I think the Pistons have a good guy now! Glad SVG will be getting a lot of time.

But you're right. The Lions are the Lions. Dombrowski has some weird blind spots to say the least. Hiring managers seems to be as big a bugaboo for him as stocking a bullpen or getting quality hitting through the draft.

I didn't think the Tigers had a shot regardless of the manager. Not a great bench, best pitchers are gone (Fister, Porcello and Scherzer) and the bullpen is a nightmare yet again. 2006 - 2013 were the years to get it done and they couldn't.

This team is 19-13 because of our talent not managerial tactics. His insistance on throwing Joe Nathan out last year to blow save after save was frustrating. It's amazing that the Tigers haven't won the world series yet with all the talent on their roster for about the last 10 years and SF has won 3 in the last 5 years without the players we have.

When your lineup of hundred million dollar hitters can only muster up 3 runs (1 unearned) in consecutive games against 2 well below average mid-30's pitchers, the manager is the least of your concerns.

The issue is that the rest of the league has adjusted with the sabermetric age.  Meanwhile, Detroit is trying to go all early 2000's-Yankees and just buy all the big hitters and free agents.  Problem is, the high powered offenses get shut down against good pitching in the playoffs 99% of the time.  All of this while Detroit has a single A-quality bullpen and an increasingly average starting rotation.  We're fast approaching the point where we just dump the high-priced, yet largely worthless, sluggers and rebuild this thing from scratch with prospects and quality pitching.

All I can say is that I went to bed when the rain delay started and then wondered if they would ever finish the game as it was also pouring downriver and I expected it to go on for a while. Right before I saw this thread, I saw both the highlights and the box score and that was probably not how I should have started my Monday. Ugh.

in a clutch situation again is deplorable.  He tried it in the playoffs last year and it failed, so he tries it again last night only to have the same result.  Ausmus must be confused with what Hernan he has on his team.  This is Heran Perez a minor league baseball player NOT Hernan Cortes the guy who conquered the Aztecs.

"While I do agree he is not the greatest manager. He did not know Cespedes and JD were going to just flail away in the ninth with no outs. And he's been given nothing to work with out of the bullpen by Dombrowski again. Taking Miggy out is debatable, hindsight is 20/20."

JD has struck out a ton in the last week or so. I think I saw it was 12 K's in 20 at bats or close to that. The scouting report on Cespedes is that he swings at everything, ala Vlad Guerero(sp?) . Your comment suggests you watch even less Tigers baseball than Ausmus himself.  They took out Miggy for speed and yet didnt even try to steal a base, that is brutal managing in itself. He is in over his head and he is evidence why rookie managers dont get handed jobs like Detroit with a ready made roster.

While the bench players and bullpen fall on DD, Ausmus has to have his head out of his *** when making decisions like the ones he screwed up over the past week and nearly all of last year.

I think his point was Cespedes is a 300 hitter, and Martinez has been showing some signs of breaking out of his slump.  Thus, you don't expect them to flail away in the ninth.

Brad Ausmus is not.  Dumb hire from the very beginning.  You don't bring in rookie managers to teams that are expected to win the World Series.  Secondly, his use of the bullpen in the ALDS last year was the worst I've ever seen.  Third, for a guy that has an Ivy league eductation, he has no interest in modern stats or Sabermetrics.  If he would look, he would realize that our OBP, SLG and BABIP are all quite high compared to the league, however we are still aren't scoring that many runs.  Maybe it's because they are tied for the 2nd most caught stealing's in the AL (in with great company like the Rays and White Sox) and Fangraphs also has a stat for toal Baserunning, which assigns a WAR number to the entire team for their baserunning.  The Tigers are -4.8, and the sad part is there are teams right near us in this stat with good records (Cardinals to name one).  So what does this mean? The Tigers are morons on the basepaths, which is double-bad because we have two of the slowest non-catchers in the American League on our team already.

Ausmus makes some bad moves.  I don't know that pinch running for Miggy was one of them.

It was certainly a very aggressive move.  But it wasn't by any definition a "terrible" move.  With no outs, having Davis on first intead of Miggy increses your chances of winning by quite a bit, and you don't know if Miggy is even going to bat again in that game.

Sure, it didn't work out, but it was an aggressive move to play for the win.  It didn't work, but that doesn't mean it was a terrible move.  If he leaves Miggy in and there was some sort of play where Miggy couldn't score because of his lack fo speed, we'd be having the exact opposite discussion.

Their offense I don't think is perfroming up to expectations yet. The relievers are always a question mark. Alburqurque or Chamberlin can pretty much only be used in a 4 run game either way. Sanchez hasn't been very good.

I think there is enough talent on the team to do pretty well, but they all have to click and it doesn't take much to throw all of that out of whack.

They potentially have a first six in their batting line-up as good as any team. I think they are planning on winning with offense this season and if the top of the lineup isn't crushing it, then it may prove difficult.

General feeling on this board is that a 10 inning 2-1 loss to a decent team in early May has officially closed the door on this team winning a championship.  Is that correct or am I way off base?

Some posters on this thread claim that hiring a rookie manager like Brad Ausmus was last year, is a sure fire way of not having success.  While the move may prove to potentially be the reason this Tigers era produces zero World Series titles, I say look to St. Louis.

While, yes, the Cardinals are the Cardinals, look at Mike Matheny.  He was a rookie manager after taking over for Tony LaRussa.  Since 2012 he has taken St. Louis to three straight playoff appearances including getting the WS in 2013.  He hasn't yet a won a title but they're 22-9 now without any real star power.

My point is...hiring a rookie manager doesn't necessarily mean it's a death knell.  I'm not here to claim Brad Ausmus will be like Mike Matheny, either.  Dollars to donuts the Tigers will be in the playoffs again this year.

How is it his fault that JD is batting .200 Victor batting .230 Costellanos batting .200 plus he has a terrible bullpen. He has a SS that can't stay healthy. How is any of that his fault? Fire Wally Joyner maybe

Glad I didnt wait out the rain delay.

Overreacting to 1 loss in a 162 game season is what makes baseball great.

JD is breaking out of his massive slump Victor is getting healthy. Greene pitched great last night after I was ready for him be sent down. Verlander is getting close. Theres a ton of reason for optimism. And Ausmus, IMO, is fine at manager. Not flawless but Leyland wasn't either.
