Extensive Recruiting Updates from Sam Webb on WTKA 1/9/17

Submitted by ColeIsCorky on

This might be lengthy, so we will see how it goes. I'm going to link the first Michigan Insider segment only as he pretty much discusses recruiting for the first 2.5 hours of his show along with the coaching changes.  Most of this information comes from segment 1 and segments 4-7.

Those of you who have been dying to hear what Sam had to say on Najee's recruitment, I believe it is in the last half of segment 5.

Aubrey Solomon 5* DT

Brian discussed a lot of this on the "Monday Recruitin'" post, but I will go into further detail here. There was discussion as to how Michigan possibly could have made up ground right after Solomon's video was posted since it was a dead period, and Sam cleared that up. Basically Aubrey asked his Mom the day the video was posted for Jim Harbaugh's phone number and in turn contacted him and for sure Chris Partridge to apologize for what went public. His mom also talked to other coaches including Devin Bush Sr., who she referred to Sam as "her dawg." Aubrey clearly had remorse after all the hooplah, and it sounds like this was more a result of peer pressure (being around Georgia recruits) than anything else.

As Brian mentions, Aubrey's Mom now clearly (both directly to Sam and also behind the scenes to other individuals as Sam states he talked to "lots of people") favors Michigan - This again was the major hurdle to clear before and after the "letter" was sent which publicly was claimed as the reason for his initial decommitment. While Sam is not ready to believe that Aubrey will be heading to Ann Arbor, it is clear that Michigan is still in this thing, especially if you combine the other evidence that Brian mentions in his post. But just for clarity, I will quote him as saying "I can't say and won't say that's enough[for Michigan to secure his commitment]."

I am going to also put this quote here because I feel like this maybe puts this general thought about tweeting at recruits like Aubrey into a much deeper context. Let's just say he has a "gut feeling" about what the coaching staff feels about these tweets to Aubrey...

"My gut tells me it's not a help. My gut tells me they hope it stops with Michigan fans and going after him. That's what my gut tells me, Ira [WTKA co-host]. Strong gut feeling. They're like, 'Dammit, please stop doing this.' My gut tells me they think they have a helluva shot. A helluva shot... As much as you can affect in your favor, you try to [regarding not negatively tweeting Aubrey and their desire for Michigan fans to leave him alone]."

So there you go. If any of you have been tweeting at Aubrey Solomon in a negative fashion, Jim Harbaugh is mad at you. And we all want Jim Harbaugh to like us, so stop forever negatively tweeting recruits.

Austin Jackson 5* OL

Sounds like he's probably going to take an official visit as there has been renewed mutual interest, but it is not set in stone. And even if he does, Michigan is clearly not the favorite to land him. That does give them a "puncher's chance." One other note on him is that he does not believe he's a guy that would be able to contribute as a Freshman because of his lack of size.

Paris Ford 4* S

Struck up a "rapport" with Jaylen Kelly-Powell and seems receptive to the idea of visiting Michigan again. "Think it's something that will be explored." No visit is set, so we will see if that official visit gets rescheduled. One side note, Sam loves him as a prospect and says the guy "can ball."

Willie Gay 4.5/Future 5*? LB

To go along with what Brian said in his recruiting post, Sam believes the LSU chatter was legit and probably had to do with the fact that LSU lost a LB commit (which was where the chatter started with Gay) and also the fact that Michigan had secured Singleton and Anthony. Definitely doesn't see this thing as over as he knows Michigan will pursue him (and has already been in contact with him) with the notion that he could start immediately.

I will also add this for you as hype as to the kind of Player Sam sees in him. He compared him (once again) to Jaylon Smith in that he could be dominant at multiple positions. Could play Safety, Linebacker, etc. Here's the piece that made me a bit giddy... "IF Jabrill comes back AND Michigan gets Willie Gay, I think Jabrill is playing safety. I don't think Jabrill Peppers is your SAM next year." In other words, he sees Gay as Jabrill's replacement regardless as to whether or not Jabrill comes back. This would allow Jabrill to play his natural Safety position that he's pegged at in the NFL, which he's publicly stated as is desired position. Both are "ifs" at this point, Jabrill even moreso, but there's that. Combine that with what Brian mentioned in his post, and this is probably the guy I want in this class the most right after Solomon - at least as far as guys Michigan has the best shot with.

Sam also mentioned some words on some of Michigan's other OL targets like Toryque Bateman, Mekhi Becton and Kai-Leon Herbert (committed), but nothing really that we haven't heard before. Toryque has an academic hurdle (public), Kai-Leon wants to play with his teammate Tedarrell Slaton (who is trending towards Florida), and Becton is a Signing Day decision (will there be room?).

Sorry for the long post. The Aubrey stuff stuck out to me the most, so I wanted to be pretty thorough with that.

Link to the 1st segment.

I highly recommend listening to the first 2.5 hours or so. Very informative, if not only for the recruiting stuff but also the coaching transition discussion. But again, the recruiting stuff is all buried within segments 1 & 4 (mostly regarding Aubrey) and also segments 5-7.

Have a good week.

I suggest try listening to the quoted part on tweeting at Aubrey. Sam's tone of voice/vocal expressions made it clear how pissed off the coaches have been as that has had an effect on not just his recruitment but probably others as well. I thought that was a great quote, so I made sure to include it.

When I joined Twitter in 2009 there were "only" 20 million users -- not the 300+ million there are today.  You used to be able to view the public timeline -- which was the realtime stream of everybodys tweets.  Even then, the unfiltered public timeline was a cesspool of ignorance, illiteracy, and racism (and scum and villainy, etc...).  With all the additional users that have joined in the past eight years, I can't even begin to imagine what that timeline would look like if you could see it today.  Unfortunately, these are the people tweeting at recruits.

It us even more creepy to tweet negitive things at a kid while pretending to be a fan of our rival. Like, what possesses a person to do this?!? I mean, it us bad enough to be so emotional about a kid choosing our school to tweet negitive things at him. These people need to get their emotions in check. But people that decide to pretend to be fans of their rivals and say hateful things to kids to make our rivals look bad is calculated and just so much more horrible imo

OSU and MSU have been doing this for years. They have accounts that are made to look like big Michigan fans but all they tend to do is bash MIchigan recruits.

There no doubt are real (dumb) Michigan fans that do this as well. The fake ones are just much more hostile and unforgiving.

why would these kids care what is said on social media? those remarks could be coming from anybody.  a msu fan could pretend to be a um fan and say horrible things to the recruit. they must realize this, right?

isnt the relationship with the coaches and the players on the team the most important things to listen to?

Sadly most of them check out (through a profile dive) from what I've seen throughout this process with Soloman, Najee and Wilson. I work extensively in social media and I'm comfortable with my recruit-stalker stalking and IDing. Some of it is the landscape (people think they can @ anyone the world and it's fine) and the fact that we have such a huge fanbase. Even as a recruit social media lurker/board commenter I feel like part of the problem sometimes. Fans are even harassing CMH about every uncommitted kid because he put in the extra time and effort to positively influence the class. I don't know how we make it stop but this is an issue with our fan base nearly as much as with any other. It would be a huge boost if we can solve this and figure it out (as fans) - Harbaugh can't say anything in public without that quote being used against us by the jive turkeys ("even Michigan's coach says their fans are dicks!"). Denial won't get us anywhere.

I was on a Facebook group for a bit called "I hate Ohio state" and had to leave because of the absolute stupidity and general asshattery. Some guy posted a pic of Najee Harris and asked someone to Photoshop him into a Michigan uniform so he could "send it to Najee." I like to think the Michigan fanbase is a little less delusional than some, but I can assure you they have their fair share of assholes.

Geez, cant believe I never thought of that. That's how morally sound I actually am. I bet them worthless sons of bitches OSU fans do create accounts that look like Michigan fans. I can so see them doing this. I hope this is told to recruits? I mean, they cheat and manipulate young men so doing something like this isn't out of their realm.

The unfortunate part about that is the most everyone reading this gets it. We don't tweet at kids. Its those morons (like that guy who was fighting with Isaiah Wilsons mom) who show up here, get negged to Bolivia and back, return to Mlive/facebook and continue to tweet recruits. I think if Jim Harbaugh himself told those idiots to stop tweeting recruits that they wouldn't listen because that's how stupid those guys act and how sure they are that what they're doing is justified in some way. Its kind of a helpless feeling for me (and I'm sure the coaches even more so) because you cant stop these morons from themselves and they literally cannot understand why they shouldn't be allowed to yell at a 17 year old over twitter. So frustrating.

I am very aggravated. I don't tweet, don't have a twitter account, and am fine with that. I would never THINK of contacting a kid I don't know. Positive or negative. Heck, I have contact with 15 and 16 year olds because of my own teenagers, and even that is a bit odd. Let only kids I don't know.

However, the only way I can see to effectively deal with this is to publicly name this kind of idiot. I don't see why the names, phone numbers, employers, photos, etc., of idiots like these aren't publicized. When people are held accountable for their stupidity, it can make a difference. When you see mug shots, when there is a "walk of shame," people think twice about what they do.

WolvinLA2

It's not that simple.  First of all, many people don't use their real name (or any name at all other than a handle) and don't list any other contact info so there is no way to actually "out" them.  Publicly shaming "UMFan4Lyfe" doesn't do any good.  And for many of these people, they tierh don't have employers (they're young, are students)  or their employers couldn't care less what they're tweeting so long as it isn't illegal.  I have a very legitimate employer and I'm not sure how much they'd care if they were informed I tweeted "who cares we didn't want you anyway" to a football recruit.  Maybe they wouldn't like it but I'm sure they wouldn't do anything about it.

And for those who don't fit into any of those categories - they wouldn't care if you publiciszed them.  Some people are idiots, they do stupid stuff, and they do it publicly because they don't think it's stupid.  They don't care if you call them on it, again because they don't think there's anything wrong with it.  And like it or not, there's nothing illegal about being a moron on the internet.

I comment on mlive every so often. I don't think many of the Michigan fans there would send negitive tweets at michigan recruits. Although, I'm sure there are some that do. However, that place is a cestpool of msu and osu trolls that hate Michigan enough that would for sure create an acckunt to pretend to be a Michigan fan.

We need to change our mindset from "don't tweet at recruits" to "don't tweet anything negative to a recruit". It's obvious that many recruits care what Fans tweet them. Tweeting encouraging and positive things makes them more likely to come to Michigan.

WolvinLA2

I agree with this.  There's really nothing wrong with tweeting "Great choice, can't wait to see you in Maize and Blue" after a recruit commits or tweeting something like "Go Blue" when a recruit tweets his top 5.  I even see a lot of "Would have liked to see you on (my team) but good luck"  when a kid picks a different school.  It's a little weird to do a lot of that, but there's nothing wrong and certainly nothing harmful in that.

that has an official position with the football program (so has that cache)  that tweets at dumbies on twitter who are harrassing prospective recruits/commits and parents.  They wouldn't contact recruits, just the Michigan fans trying to be "helpful" and telling them to stop. Harder to ignore someone from the program than random Michigan supporters who are trying to do the right thing.

The weirdest, and most annoying, part about the Aubrey Solomon recruitment is that when he was committed, Michigan still had to win over mom. Now he's decommitted, and they've clearly won her over, and now it's Aubrey they have to win over. Again.

also agree with me as well. His mom was being a douche by saying go LSU when he announced that he's going to Bama. Worked out for Collins since he's in the pro and had a breakout season.

Yes, but every family is different.  Sometimes they kids is so close to his parent & is not a "rebel" in that way, that pretty much if the parent likes a place, the kid's going to go there unless the kid absolutely HATES it.

Bottom line is sometimes if a parent likes a place, it only boosts it in the kid's eyes 10%.  Sometimes it boosts a place 90%.  And I suppose if a kid has a toxic relationship w/ a parent it could actually be a negative impact.

On the Solomon front, it seems like the parental approval/preference does weight somewhat heavily.  Even though he originally committed without her being on campus, he did call her up beforehand to get a preliminary blessing sight unseen.

I also got to think that momma Solomon is not too thrilled with her son going to GA.  If my son were hanging out with a group of friends that were involved in my son saying something that idiotic on periscope, you can bet that school would get scratched off my list.  I would want my son to be around people of high character.  I  don't know our 2017 commits personally, but if momma Solomon has met many of them and thinks very highly of their character, then I can see how this whole episode has helped us get back in it with this kid.

Oh, and one quick note on the Willie Gay/Jaylon Smith comparison. He actually stated that he's not saying he's Jaylon Smith 2.0 but is a similar type of skilled player where he couldn't believe how dominant he was at whatever position/skill he tried at. He clearly sees him as a 5* talent though, and I believe he's gone on record as saying that he sees him as the best LB prospect in the class. He's not the only Insider/Scout who feels that way.
