Everyone getting an extra year of eligibility kinda adds to that crunch as well I would assume. Obviously not everyone’s extra year will be utilized, but anyone who does impacts scholarship counts. Unless the NCAA finally amended a rule where the CoVidshirt year doesn’t count against scholarship totals.

As it stands, we flipped a couple guys we didn’t think we’d get and are pursuing a couple guys in the portal we didn’t know would be there. The CoVidshirt is an added factor to a situation where numbers would already be getting tight.

If a player is that stupid to allow his coach to steer him away from a school like Michigan because the coach has personal issues, maybe it's best he doesn't go to Michigan, even if he is number one in the state. Parents will wake up to how detrimental this coache is to their children's future.   In future years, their kid going to Michigan will probably make more money from NiL income every year than the parents combined.  If the parents are going to allow the coach to influence they're kid from playing at Michigan, then the kid needs new parents and a new coach

Yeah the shortsightedness is what seems a little perplexing to me. Also not to mention all the time and energy the staff, and Harbaugh personally spent trying to mend that broken relationship in the first place with Crowell and his staff. To burn it all down again a couple months later makes no sense, and at this point have to assume it will not be repaired.

It’s true Belleville kids haven’t lived up to their lofty rankings oftentimes under Crowell’s program, but at the same time they do produce a lot of P5 talent and you never know what the future holds; a future that Michigan probably isn’t going to be a part of.

hopefully the staff kept it real with A2 and let him know this could be a possibility. And it’s just sour grapes from Crowell (who seems like a bit of a drama queen if you ask me). I’m sure we’ll here what happened exactly in the coming weeks.

Always down for negs but I believe he was processed or not given a committable offer when it was time to cash in the chips. It sucks and no one ever likes to admit it but the writing is kind of on the wall. Lower-rated recruit who jumped at the chance to join the team and as a result of yesterday’s flips, ultimately wasn’t a take.

Similar to Swenson a few years ago but in that case I felt like the staff just didn’t like the fit for him and should’ve cut ties earlier. Whereas I think Alexander would’ve made it if not for the last second rush and numbers crunch. We don’t know what conversations were had and hopefully some transparency was established. Best of luck to the young man! The most positive outlook here is that with the early signing period, some team (possibly a P5 one at that) should be willing to pick him up.

No negs needed in your response but what’s your take on any recruit that gives you his verbal and then flips on the date of the early signing period, without notifying any school?  Can you see?  Is there any perfect way to recruit? Do you really believe that they told a player you’re high on our board, but could you wait a little while?  Most times it’s so easy to be speculative and side with stories when we don’t know, but once again, do you believe that we’d actually recruit a player to hang them out to dry, on purpose?

I think both players and coaches have accountability and need more transparency/honesty. For example, Will Johnson, a 5* star recruit with talent galore can commit at any time and he's a take and further yet, you make the room to take players like him. There are no strings attached.

On the flip side (no pun intended), a lower 3* can commit under the notion that the staff wants to see certain aspects of his game improve or more production at the HS level. It's up to the student to decide if they want to commit under that premise but everyone needs to be honest and up front. Maybe not all offers are created equal and if we're all honest with each other, that's ok. It's risk/reward for both sides but again we don't know the level of transparency here. From the sounds of his message, it looks like he has some respect for the coaches so hopefully some decorum was practiced. As stated in the great poker movie, Rounders: Always leave yourself an out.

My assumption as well. From a simply relationship management perspective though, it does seem odd to process a kid from the program you spent a better part of 2 years trying to mend your relationship with, finally get to a good place with one another, just to burn it all down again (and all but for good this time). That part I don’t really understand.

Crowell does seem like a prima donna a little bit, but he is a well connected guy in MHSAA coaching circles and he does have P5 level talent come thru his program on a yearly basis. Burning that relationship completely to the ground as opposed to figuring out some way to get Alexander in the class one way or another is a risky maneuver from my admittedly uninformed perspective.

I’m sure at some point whatever happened will hit the recruiting beat.

You know what? If Michigan wins the NC and dominates in 2022 and beyond, Michigan won't have to worry about Belleville, imo. Yes, ALL big ifs, but one can wish really hard for it.

You are absolutely right and Michigan holds the keys to their destiny at this point. Having a bad relationship with a strong H.S. football team in your own back yard, where you would usually have better than a 50/50 chance at their players is not a good look. These players play with a chip on their shoulder and come back to bite you in the ass when they play you. I hope they repair the rift and good luck to the kid.

The tea leaves and his note referencing things suggests the staff reached out and told him they weren't going to send him papers and asked him to wait until February. Seems unlikely we will get the full story but it does feel like a numbers crunch put Alexander in a bad spot. And this outcome is exactly why the early signing period is necessary, it forced the staff to be honest about where he stood in the class and now gives Alexander 3 months to find a landing spot that is a good fit.

Just have to hope they've been honest with him for a while and so the numbers crunch affecting his offer wasn't new news, just the crunch happening was due to the flips of Saab, Clemons, etc. If that were the case could be some initial anger when it goes down but overall understanding. Still don't love the idea of the staff accepting the commitment of a kid they aren't going to guarantee a spot for and hope if they did run out of room and ask him to hold off they do a better job of not accepting lower rated kids as placeholders to process out going forward.

Me neither.  But we have been on the other side of this too.  This cycle in fact.

"Committing" does not mean anything anymore, to anybody.

At least everyone is used to that by now.  I hope.

This. The early signing period is the early signing period. It's not like they processed a guy on the eve of NSD. They gave him 3 months to find another spot, which seems reasonable to me.

Now if they'd told a commit in February that they re-evaluated and he's no longer welcome, that's a different story.

But this ignores the fact that most schools fill up most of their roster during the "early" signing period.  Yes he can go out and look for another landing spot but now he's got far fewer options because many schools have taken full/near-full classes.  And so instead of going on official visits and getting to know other staffs he relied on getting a letter from UM and now he doesn't.

What I don't get is this ongoing undercurrent (and not saying this is you OP) that the HS kids need to just roll with the punches because some millionaire coaches screwed them over to some degree.  Again, don't offer in June if you aren't willing to take the commitment.

As usual we won’t get the full story on this either way. I do feel like in the past the understanding was that post-Swenson, Harbaugh staffs have been careful to give kids on the fence a clear expectation of where things might go when it’s not a sure thing. Hope that hasn’t changed but sounds like either way we pissed off Belleville again here…sigh

Yeah, my issue was them offering so early if he wasn't a take.  Alexander was always a fringe candidate and UM was always likely to be able to get him late if the scholarship number shook out differently and they had a spot.  It made no sense to me to offer him in June and then say "but remember, we might not take you if we don't have enough spots" because there's only downside in that situation.  Not that I particularly care about Belleville as a talent pipeline but this is still shitty for Alexander and the staff should know better.  This won't be a huge story because it happens a bunch but Harbaugh deserves blame for letting it happen.

Let’s think about this too…

When was the last time he visited Michigan or went to a game despite his proximity?

Do we really think that Crowell wouldn’t be screaming from the rooftops and singling out Michigan by name if his tweet was about them?  Rowser didn’t sign yesterday either, along with almost anyone else from Belleville.

Something feels off here.

Does anybody know what AA was told about his offer being contingent? Or do we always going to speculate on what we think went down and then turn that speculation into fact because of boredom?

Nobody here thinks JH should have pulled an offer with no indications, I would assume. So why do we speculate that it was the case because the HS coach sends out a cryptic rant?

Ever think, if it was UM, he names Harbaugh and then it allow JH to respond with a clear explanation of how it went down w/o naming the student?

I remember seeing a story about an in-state commit or recruit who was struggling to qualify academically. A poster noted that the school and teachers let him down, and the path forward was to build an academic progress plan. Was it Aaron or someone else?

December 16th, 2021 at 3:28 PM ^

This is the type of guy that ends up at MSU with a major disrespek chip on his shoulder.

Hopefully this doesn't hurt our recruiting pipeline at all, but this happens all the time with all schools....seems only UM gets shit on, however, for the realities of the modern CFB recruiting process.

Blau

Everybody is in an uproar over this whole "pipeline" thing but a player can chose wherever the hell he wants to go and has an offer to. Sure having a coach in your corner sing your praises helps and relationships go far but at the end of the day, it's not going to stop UM from recruiting a player in Michigan or across the country. When you combine the academic and athletic opportunities that UM provides and then have a HS coach or program say "Don't go to that college... They once didn't take a 3* prep kid of mine years ago", than the pipeline isn't really needed anymore.

No one has any idea what the reason is at this time, he doesn’t seem upset. There is a possibility the decision was on his end and not ours.  The sky is NOT falling, to think we did this and now we won’t get any more recruits from the state is a little much.

And once again it appears that we have stepped on our dicks with a Belleville kid.   In state recruiting has been weird enough without adding more drama to the mix.   This needs to be fixed.

I'm sorry, I thought this was an internet message board.  And apparently you have missed every single other post in here which also speculates.  And apparently you missed the tweet from the Belleville coach complaining about programs pulling offers.   It is almost impossible to spin this in a positive light, but knock yourself out.

Again we are never going to know the real story unless one of the recruiting guys is going to tell it, but odds of that actually happening are slim. We all know that the HS coach and players in situations like this hold all of the power because they can say whatever they want because the college and coaches cannot say anything publicly. so it is a lose lose for the college coaches...

However if you go and look at Crowell's twitter feed and on December 8th he posted Alexander's highlights from the State Championship game and tagged a bunch of schools in a reply one of  them being Michigan. To me that makes it seem like all parties involved knew something was up a week or so before and Crowell was trying to help him find a landing spot...
