Early season byes suck

Submitted by Moleskyn on September 12th, 2019 at 10:25 AM

Or neg me to oblivion. I don't care.

It's such a tease to have the buildup for the season, then play 2 games, and now we have to wait an extra week to be entertained again. I don't care that this team needs the extra time to prepare for Wisconsin.

The offensive performance in the first two games suggested to me that the guys weren't ready.  This early bye is good.  I don't like it either but if it helps us have more success this season then it's worth the wait.

Well, this one came at a good time and it lets me pay a bit more attention to other programs I enjoy following like

Cal (2-0) hosting North Texas.  Cal is coming off an upset over #14 Washington in Seattle.  I can also just enjoy watching games and not be freaking out in my head about the upcoming potential disaster in Madison

If it gives us time to work out our kinks on offense and perform better I'm all for it.  Although, I remember saying the same thing in 2017 prior to MSU game - and then saying WTF did they practice all week during the bye.

You know what sucks more? This weekend's schedule. Not one top 25 matchup this week, not sure how that is even possible. Syracuse getting hamblasted by Maryland took away the best opportunity for a ranked matchup against Clemson. Just terrible games this weekend. A few great games would have helped offset our bye week.

Not this year. The offesne is already beat up and out of sink. They need a week off.

We also have a second later bye, so what are you complaining about?

Would this Saturday be wife day or is the next bye week Saturday wife day? Or do we have two of those this year? My wife is gone this weekend but maybe I'll finally build that deck for her.

I wish Michigan played Rutgers this week and had a bye after the Wisconsin game, but this isn't bad. I think if Michigan had won two laughers then no one would be too antsy about this bye week.

With the injury and running a new offense, it is great timing this year.  Hopefully, we are back to full strength and able to add more to this bland offense by the time we play Wisconsin.

View it as an entire Saturday off from football - have you looked at the schedule - Woof!  I may not watch any football on a weekend in September for maybe the first time in my life.

I’d prefer to play in week zero that way we could have two byes I’d place one right in the middle of big ten play and then one right before Ohio state to have some extra in depth preparation.

After the stress of watching that Army game, this is a very welcome bye week.  So no, they do not suck.

Stress free days never suck.  Bye weeks allow me the no stress while I joyously root against the many, many teams I hate in college football.

If this offense was high flying and on a roll, I would agree with you.  However, this team has a lot to work on before Wisky.  I'm all for this bye week and an opportunity to step away from getting frustrated.

I think the first bye week is perfectly placed this year. We survived our intro into the new offense beating two fairly decent non-con foes. There are obviously some kinks to smooth over. The two week retraining period is well placed as a prelude to conference play.

I think it's a good reset button before a big 10 play, gives dinged up players a chance to be healthy, and gives coaches time to iron out issues that showed up on the field. I also like the extra week of prep before a big conference road game. Scheduling service academies sucks, I'd rather we scheduled a local MAC school, or smaller university from the state of Michigan to get them some national exposure.

Conversely I think the way the SEC does it is just dumb. Many of them start conference play on week one, and have boring cupcake games mixed in late in the season. Nobody wants to watch Alabama play Troy in November.

That's smart by the sec, though.

By the time you're in November the polls basically work like:

a) lose and drop

b) win and rise

Their strategy basically insures the entire conference rises (or at worst, individual teams stay in place) at a critical time.  Beneficial not only in the obvious way for their top tier teams, but because their rivals will be ranked higher during those late season games.

Meanwhile, the other big conferences are playing each other meaning every in-conf win is also an in-conf loss.  While the sec essentially spends a week late in the season going undefeated collectively.  Think that's by accident?

The sec has done a lot of really smart things to game first the bcs and now the playoff system.  They used to do this thing where all their ooc games were basically their strong teams vs somewhat worse teams from other p5 conferences, while their weaker teams played ooc games against g5 conf teams.  Just really smart stuff, collectively.

I mean, they've also been strong as hell, especially at the top - but a lot of maneuvering to prop up sos and decrease odds of late season losses as well.

Cheers.

Yeah its annoying but it would also suck to play Wisconsin in a couple days

This bye gives Michigan time to work on things and hopefully Wisconsin settles down

Im just going to go golfing this Saturday since I cant on the Saturdays Michigan is playing

Our defense needs to regroup after an afternoon full of cut blocks.  I shall enjoy another Saturday watching other teams lose.  I just wish ND-UGA was this week instead of next.

I think this bye week came at the exact time that we needed it. After last weeks game the wheels were coming off. We get DPJ and Runyan back while getting more time to iron out the wrinkles for Wisconsin.

This bye came at the perfect time. I get the take that you need the extra rest later in the season but what would that do if we already have an L because the offense wasn't ready early on.
