Draft: Further Evidence of Harbaugh’s Greatness

Submitted by UNCWolverine on

While watching the draft I couldn’t help but notice how many players from our rival teams/big ten were taken before our first player was taken. If you didn’t watch/track the draft very closely here is a quick rundown of the number of players taken before Glasgow was selected at #95.

OSU – 10 players (5,2,3)

ND – 6 players (2,2,2)

MSU – 3 players (2,0,1)

PSU – 3 players (0,2,1)

Other big ten – 7 (0,4,3)

PS: Connor Cook is still waiting by the phone.

It’s pretty incredible to see these numbers considering we were only really outplayed by one team all season. I can’t see this happening again for a very long time.

PPS: Connor Cook, still not drafted...

Edited:

OK, Cook has now been drafted.

I understand Lewis/Butt could have gone early and been drafted prior to Glasgow. My point in writing this wasn't to analyze it from a micro level. It's to show from a marcro level just how far behind our roster was from a talent level and still basically only lost one game all season. Really the Utah, MSU, IU, Minney games were coin flips.

This draft is a huge pivot point for our program. OSU just had their 11th (!!!) player taken in the first 3.5 rounds. MSU just lost the best QB they've ever had. Meanwhile our roster is as strong as ever. That's my whole point, guess I should have taken more time to explain this when I wrote it last night.

It's a good thing we don't have any first round draft picks in this draft. That means Butt and Lewis are still on the team.

Exactly. I have come across a lot of Buckeye fans who were bragging about how many guys have been chosen in the first, second, and third rounds. That just means they are not coming back next season in college. Yes, that is great for their recruiting, but I don't care about that considering the staff that Michigan has. Michigan will get their guys drafted under Jim Harbaugh.

Could convince itself that having 94 players taken before one of your own is a positive credit to your HC. I'm sure that the coaches that actually have national championship rings would see that as a failure. But you guys just keep thinking like you have been......Maybe one day many years from now you will have some senior players that actually know what it feels like to win a game against your rivals. It's doubtful, but maybe

I have the largest man crush ever on Harbaugh, but do we really need this thread? I mean, we have a ton of talent that decided to return to school. Using the draft as a measurement is silly in my eyes.

the first team on the list that had substantially more players taken so far did actually take us behind the woodshed. ND on the list is irrelevant to the point.  They were very talented last year, and also better than us. The next team on the list that we actually played beat us as well.

I love me some Harbaugh, and we had a great season, but give the kids some credit too.  We had a good amount of first, second and third round talent on the team this year, they just decided to come back to school.

What would you rather talk about? I understand disagreeing. But, shit...it's the off-season. People who choose what threads are worthy and which aren't need to get out of their ivory tower and join us "little" people.

the draft numbers and not circle it back to Harbaugh's greatness? I mean, it's not like the team was the little sisters of the poor that Jim magically coached to 10-3. Jabrill Peppers and Jourdan Lewis are future 1st rounders, Jake Butt is a borderline first rounder, half the defensive line has a future in the NFL and a ton of these kids are former highly recruited prospects. The talent was there. Saying that this draft shows how great Harbaugh is, kind of misleading, no?

This team won 5 games the year before. It was pretty amazing that we got to 10 wins this year. They weren't the little sisters of the poor and it wasn't magic, but this season can absolutely be used to show how great Harbaugh is. Having talent on the team does not mean automatic wins. Also, I find it funny that you are fine with the pointing out of statistics in a post, but don't want the analysis. I'm sure this board would be way better with more stats that are easy to look up and less analysis

my agreement with the prior post was not that this shouldn't be a thread. My agreement was with the previous post pointing out the abusrdity of the OP's faulty logic and conclusion that somehow the data presented points to Harbaugh being great.

The OP is, of course, more than welcome to post anything, and we are all similarly more than welcome to rip apart such poorly reasoned posts.  Because just as you say, what else are we to talk about during the offseason?

But I feel like this is like the annual list of weight changes for football players.

If they gained weight it's muscle, if they lost weight, it's conditioning.

Had Michigan had 10 players drafted in the first round, everyone (including me) would be crowing about how great a coach he is and how this bodes well for recruits.

Don't misunderstand me, I completely agree with you. Last year's squad was excellent, and the lack of early round players (exception of Butt and Lewis) demonstrates good coaches and good team cohision.

The reason osu had some many go this year is because it was their first full cycle of recruiting under urbz.

They had zero first rounders after his first year. Which is to be expected after a coaching change.

I can think of one guy already who is most likely going to be in the 2019 draft after his junior season.

precisely.

It's funny how people create straw man arguments.

Think I'll include this in an edit.

I agree with all but Speight. He's going into his junior year and looks the part, but he'll need 4 years of college ball and I'm stil not sold on his arm strength and leadership skills. Maybe another OLineman sneaks in, and maybe Taco...Dymonte...Jeremy Clark. It'll be great PR but we're losing a ton. Good thing we have the coaches that can develop talent quick and reload.

Still shocked Cook has been unclaimed. The fact that someone took Hackenberg (even if it's the friggin Jets) before Cook must mean that most every team really got rubbed the wrong way by Cook. I didn't think his character issues were THAT bad.

I figured he'd be off the board by the second round at the latest. Now he'll have to fight just to make a roster spot.
