DPJ is overwhelming

don’t remember the user that started the negative thread about DPJ being underwhelming but let’s give him a chance to come on here and be contrite.

This is an overreaction after a game against a weak opponent. Peoples-Jones didn't do anything amazing today. He was running wide open against a team with a bad secondary. He did make a nice adjustment on the back-shoulder fade in the endzone, but the routes he was running today and the plays he made didn't require a ton of talent to pull them off. Grant Perry could have scored at least two of those touchdowns (maybe not the back-shoulder throw), or virtually any of the other scholarship receivers, too.

except nobody said anything about whether this staff would maximize his talent. way to change the topic just to be contrarian.

the point of the post was to shame aaamichigan fan for his stupid hottakes but congrats, you found a way to minimize dpj’s best game of his collegiate career (so far)

Right...I did.

Whether you like it or not, DPJ's performance/production has been less than expected so far for a 5-star receiver. Even with his big day yesterday, he's averaging 11.36 yards/catch. For a comparison, the two other 5-star receivers in his class (Tee Higgins, Jerry Jeudy) are averaging 21 and 26 yards per catch, respectively, and both have more receiving yardage.

(Full disclosure: USC signed 5-star Joseph Lewis in 2017, but Lewis got in some legal trouble and isn't on USC's roster anymore.)

EDIT: As further evidence, of receivers with 10+ catches this year, Peoples-Jones is #10 in the Big Ten in yards per reception. None of the nine guys ahead of him were 5-star recruits.

whether you like it or not, you’re not any sort of authority about football. you’re a jv high school coach who’s cherry picking stats to fit your narrative.

those receivers played at clemson and alabama, respectively.  they weren’t saddled with john o’korn for most of their freshman year and a terrible o-line for their entire career

jok couldnt hit wide open receivers 10 yards downfield and the line couldn’t block a stunt all year, but yeah we should totally throw dpj under the bus because he couldn’t block, throw the ball and then catch it himself for more than 10 yards a pop

No. Not every WR can score on all of those—because not every WR is getting open on all of those, nor does every WR have his talent. It is nonesense to state that when we haven’t had a WR since Chesson do anything near that. In the offense with a QB, DPJ has shown his talent. Last year he would consistently get open and have Okorn whiff. We had 0 WR tds last year because Speight went down before DPJ moved into the lineup.

And you wrote it yourself—the back shoulder adjustment—that takes body control and reaction time, and hands. Kekoa would’ve botched two of those. Perry would’ve been caught on one and dropped the back shoulder.

I know some people on here see you as some master evaluator, but there is no need to downplay what DPJ and what skills today showed. Even if the opposing secondary is not that good, doesn’t mean scoring three TDs on them is a given. We have all of last year to prove that QB play matters in how good WRs can be shown to be. And let’s not forget DPJs TD last week, which was a talented catch that proves DPJ can live up to the expectations, given a QB.

Or, we can go with your criticism to invalidate what we saw and still believe as the fan yesterday, that DPJ is a dud.

It's odd to me that you reference Chesson in this, who had Jake Rudock as a QB, but then you say no receiver has done that since...

...and then you talk about the bad QB play over the past year or two.

So which is it? Is it the bad QB play that's suddenly good again? Or is it because Peoples-Jones is a supremely talented WR?

I never said Peoples-Jones is a dud. You're putting words in my mouth. I said his production has been underwhelming, and I said the other scholarship wide receivers could have made most of the plays he did yesterday (other than perhaps the back-shoulder fade TD). I predicted a breakout game for him on Friday on TTB (I said 100+ yards and 1 TD), so I don't know what you're upset about.

While he has picked up his play the last two weeks, please remember it was against WMU and SMU.  Definitely not top caliber opponents.  He has a huge physical advantage vs those teams.  On a bight note though the adjustment he made on the back shoulder throw in the end zone was outstanding.  To be come a "playmaker" or "dude" you have to start somewhere.  This is a very good sign.

Unfortunately he cannot play offensive line.

The only hope for this team on offense is for DPJ (and Nico) to keep providing that deep threat. I just don't see them running the ball consistently against the better teams.
