Did Hunter’s shot settle the score for Ben Brust’s shot in ‘13?

Submitted by Cousin Larry on February 26th, 2023 at 10:28 PM

Brust hit the half-courter that tied the game and led to an eventual OT win for Wisconsin in 2013.  Hunter finally returned the favor for Michigan today, 10 years and 17 days later.

I believe that settles the score and kills that ghost.  And if this win gets Michigan in the tourny and/or keeps Wisconsin from making it, I believe it will take over as the biggest play in the history of the rivalry.

What say?  Are you fine now??

I wouldn't say I'm over the ben brust shot, but I'm happy today.  Wisconsin has built a laundry list of wrongs, from ridiculous buzzer beaters to injuring our players over the years to Brad Davison that it may never be over.  But today.  Today is good.

Am I fine now?  Glad for yesterday’s win.

Does that make up for all the garbage over the years in all sports?   No, it doesn’t.   I hope Michigan defeats the Badgers in each of the next 100 times the schools square off in an athletic competition.

And - academically - Wisconsin is a fine school, in a great city / town.   Their players and many of their fans are downright obnoxious / repulsive,

Nope. As I recall, Wisconsin sank Michigan on a buzzer beater in the 2010-11 season as well. Didn’t stop Michigan from making the tournament, but if memory serves, Wisconsin was or was close to a being a top-10 team, Michigan had them on the ropes and was leading in the final seconds, and Wisconsin sank a buzzer beater to win the game.

So no, this does not make up for everything. If you want to say it makes up for the 2013 shot then fine, but there’s still an outstanding debt to be paid, in my book.

I was thinking more about Josh Gasser's back board 3 point shot. My memory of that season is that my wife and I were in Tucson the 1st weekend of the tournament.  We met a couple at the hotel bar wearing Wisconsin gear -- the Badgers were playing there -- and thinking they were just fans told them how heart-breaking that banked 3 pointer at Crisler was.  Their response -- "We hope you won't hold it against us but we're Josh Gasser's parents."

nope.  wisconsin is the thuggiest program around, in literally every sport, yet somehow nobody outside the big ten realizes it.

the only way it offsets their history is if brad davison and grant newsome get to switch knees and careers.

I know this. The Badgers Media are not liking Hunter after hitting that shot. Much less crying about his physical play. I find it ironic considering the Badgers are the dirtiest team in style for the last 10 years and during the whole Brad Davison Era.

A thousand "No's" to that questions.

But, Brad Davidson U losing the way they did after Hunter violently stepped on *checks video* the ground feels very very good.

Hunters shot last night was way more detrimental to Wisconsin and their postseason hopes than Brust’s prayer in 2013. That game in 2013 seemed to cause a bit of a down spiral ending of the season but the team rallied back and made it to the National Championship. This loss to Wisconsin could very well kick them out of the field of 64. Go Blue!

Maybe you could say it settles the account for 2013. But nothing will ever settle the account of that squirrel Davison and his nut hunting. Even if Hunter's shot keeps the Badgers from making the tourney and Michigan gets in and has another Sweet 16 appearance or better, it doesn't even the score. Any coach/team that allows such dirty play has a lot to answer for.

NO.  The basketball gods still have a few to owe us from all the miracle garbage they have pulled off on us in the past.  Gasser, Brust, whatever that bank shot was yesterday, and all the Trohl Center rip offs we have had there.

Idk about that but I’m seeking karmic damage refunds for trudging through the Brad Davison decade only to turn right back around into Wisconsin’s latest villain/arch nemesis in Connor Essegian.

Kid is going to be a thorn in our ass for years.

Cousin Larry; I was thinking the same thing about the Ben Brust half court shot some 10 years ago. It seemed like Karma and payback for the Maize and Blue. Am glad you posted the comparison.

It would be great to knock Wisc out of the NCAA tourny but all of that will decided in the Big-10 tourny first. That is going to be a very wild event come March 8,9 & 10.

I think Wisconsin is up 3-2 in 'super lucky shots that decide/nearly decided this game':

Wisconsin:

-Brust half-courter

-Gasser banked-3 buzzer beater in Crisler

-Essegian banked-3 on Sunday

Michigan:

-Stauskas step-back 3 in Trohl Center

-Dickinson on Sunday

I think Michigan is still owed one for next year 😉.

I almost started a thread on this, but to me Wisconsin has become our 2nd biggest basketball rival. I think I'd rather beat them than OSU at this point in hoops.

1. MSU

2. Wisconsin

3. OSU

Am I crazy?

I unfortunately was in the Trohl Center stands on that fateful Saturday in 2013 when Brust heaved the basketball half-court to tie the game. My recollection (these days, admittedly, not what it used to be) is that Beilein sent out freshman Caris LeVert to guard Brust on the throw in. What the coach’s instructions to young LeVert were I don’t know, but might have been something like “don’t foul him.” Seems to me that if LeVert did foul, Brust could have made all three shots and tied the game. If LeVert fouled Brust and the shot still found its way into the bucket, Brust’s one additional FT could have won the game.  So FWIW, ‘ol Ben had a pretty much unopposed look when he launched the ball.

But however one slices it, the fact that the ball did find its way into the basket was near-miraculous. HD’s three-pointer yesterday was, as some have already said, an NBA-distance bomb. After he received the ball, he dribbled once, squared up, and launched. Two different efforts.

Still, the common thread is that in Madison back then, M thought it had the game won. Brust’s bomb emptied enough wind from M’s sails that it affected their overtime mojo — as it appeared to me at the time. Same with the Badgers yesterday — HD’s shot basically snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and demoralized them to the point that they weren’t quite the same team in OT. So in that sense, HD’s effort evened the score. Go Blue.

I vote YES and I commend your post on the subject.  Ben Brust has a place in michigan lore and I often recreate that shot when I find myself with a ball, a hoop, and a bit of time.
