Devin & Jeremy in Japan: Nojima Rise Game 2

Submitted by Carcajou on

Devin Gardner ran for one TD, and threw to Jeremey Gallon for two more, in a 24-21 overtime loss to the Lixil Deers.

Gardner was 28-41 and 399 yards plus another 35 yards on the ground, but unfortunately threw 4 interceptions in the game, one as they were driving for a go ahead score in the 4th quarter, and one in overtime.

The Rise is now 0-2.

More details later.

Can someone explain this league to me? I know they have a cap on American players (4/team, IIRC), so who makes up the rest? I can't imagine the talent level for Japanese players can be that high across the board...

Japanese players, generally ones who played at the university level, are quite good, though not as big. While the overall talent level is generally maybe not Division 1A, it's fairly high. As I mentioned previously, there were several Japanese players in NFL-Europe when it existed, and also in the Arena League. They have several players who were at NFL camps and even a couple who have made practice squads over the years.

Perhaps you didn't know there is a World Cup of American Football held every four years, since 1999. The Japanese won the first two (before the US sent a team), and lost the 2007 championship to the US team in double overtime. (The next one is scheduled to be in 2019). They are generally right up there with Mexico, trailing the US and Canada, in international competitions.

Sorry to thread jack, didn't feel this needed its own thread: JD is out again today. I think he'd be ready to go next week, still don't think it's really serious. Add in potentially slick field & there's no real reason to put him out there.

It was interesting reading about the league, it's been around for quite some time. American players in the league honestly praise the Japanese players skill and athleticism. It's a faster paced game, but without the same bulk in the trenches. A sort of a revolution in game play happened when teams recently started using their foreign player spots on quarterbacks. Scoring records were shattered, because american qbs are american qbs, spread the field more, and open up the game.

I was looking at the roster of Devin and Jeremy's teams.  They have a LB who is like 46 years old.  Gives me hope!
