The way I see it is, Harbaugh wanted immunity from the NCAA investigations. UofM said ok, we want you locked in and committed. No more talking to the NFL. Harbaugh wouldn't commit to that. At the last minute UofM dropped the no NFL clause but it was too late.

If Harbaugh really wanted to be here, he would be and wouldn't have talked to other teams every year since arriving in Ann Arbor. His heart was never with Michigan. Michigan was a stop to build his resume

How can Michigan have spent "months" rejecting contract terms that were "proposed in late 2023"?

Jim wanted to go back to the NFL for a while (I realize the folly of trusting what's left of the Fourth Estate but there was credible reporting two years ago that indicated he'd thought the Vikings job was his).

My first choice would've been keeping him for another 10 years, but there's something to be said for the final coaching memories consisting of 15-0, hoisting the trophy, the parade, etc.

I mean, I think Harbaugh was leaving to go to the NFL.  Michigan was going to make him the highest paid coach in the country but that still wasn't enough for him to "feel loved"?  I don't blame Harbaugh for wanting immunity for whatever the investigations find, but I also don't blame the university for taking some issue with it.  "Love" doesn't mean blanket immunity for possible transgressions.  But there was no reason to not give in to it than offer it in the final hours.

All that said, I think the immunity requirement was a red herring.  He got offered a contract making him the highest paid coach in the college football and turned it down for more money and a chance to compete for a Super Bowl, which are completely understandable reasons to take the Chargers job and leave Michigan.

When parties want something done they find a way.  Jim wants to win a Super Bowl but needed and NFL team to give him what he wanted.  They did and he’s gone.

Michigan is Defending National Champions and 3x consecutive, undisputed B1G Champion.  Thank you, Jim and everyone on the Team.

yeah...this smells a fishy as warde leaking out the "we made him the top paid guy" at the 11th hour.

It's seems both are doing some cya/agent speak. So is life...

I f-ing knew it!

Outrageous!

They completely blew it.

Is it through sheer incompetence, or intentional?  A bureaucratic pile of moronic bunglers, or a cesspool of despicable scheming saboteurs?

I'm wondering if there are anti-Harbaugh regents.  And/or anti-football regents.  People who would be way happier if Michigan had a football program like Yale, which would be inconsequential and know its place.

If this is true, there should be a bunch of people shit canned over this.

Damned enraging!

"A detail about the Harbaugh contract negotiations."

Sheesh.

"Reported that Michigan catastrophically mishandled Harbaugh contract negotiations" more like it.
