David Peters (Brandon's father) on Shea Patterson per Sam Webb

Submitted by Blue in Paradise on

Sam Webb interviewed David Peters (Brandon's father) in regards to the Shea Patterson transfer and discussed on his show this morning.

Summary

  • The Patterson family were the ones to reach out to Michigan (we already knew that)
  • Harbaugh sat down with each of the QBs and commits to explain the situation
  • Michigan initially passed on Shea as they did not have a roster spot open at QB
  • After Wilton informed the staff about his grad transfer, Harbaugh reconsidered Patterson's interest to transfer
  • David Peters said that Michigan NEEDED ANOTHER QB for depth so of course they should go after the best available
  • David Peters said that his son was raised to compete and not run from a challenge
  • Brandon said that he doesn't care if they bring in 30 more QBs, nobody is taking the job from him

I hope this shuts up all the doom and gloomers and ends their concern trolling that Peters is going to transfer now that the Patterson transfer is official.  I never thought once that Peters was going to transfer in 2018 based on Patterson (2019 could be another story based on how the competition plays out).

Sam didn't mention McCaffrey but I can't imagine (given his family background) that he is scared of competition either - besides Patterson is two eligibility classes away from DCaff so that makes no sense in any case.

I am irrationally excited about 2018 and can't wait to see 3 stud QBs battle it out to be the starter next year.

I think both MSU and OSU are concerned. The weakest position at Michigan since Carr retired has been QB. That glaring deficit is being fixed. Niyo has a good article at the Detroit News, applauding the move to bring Patterson in.

LINK:  Can Patterson help Michigan win arms race?

In comparing QB's at the 3 schools, Niyo makes this observation:

By contrast, Michigan State has had a future NFL quarterback starting every season but one since 2007, going from Brian Hoyer to Kirk Cousins to Connor Cook. Now they’ve got Brian Lewerke, who looks like he might be one, too. Ohio State has enjoyed a similar run, going from Terrelle Pryor to Braxton Miller to J.T. Barrett, with a Cardale Jones cameo thrown in for good measure.

Michigan now has three guys on the roster, and two coming in, who are highly ranked, and could quite possibly head to the NFL. That hasn't been the case for a while. And with one year under Harbaugh, Rudock has at least earned a spot as a backup QB. Kids notice those kinds of things.

As of today, Peters has no need to transfer. He still has the bowl game and spring practice to prove himself. If he throws 4 interceptions in the Outback Bowl or looks how Speight looked in last year's Spring game if he actually gets blitzed this time, this fan base will take a flaming dump on Peters. Peters wouldn't be a true transfer candidate until after spring practice.

Love it. Get after it Brandon. Can't wait to see him light it up in the bowl game.

Not to mention that it wasn't long ago a team won the MNC with a 3rd-string QB.

People saying we don't need three viable QBs are fooling themselves.  Harbaugh knows he's got produce his best season in 2018, and he can't make excuses--even if we're down two QBs.

Can't imagine a better response from Peters and his family.  I had some misgivings about the situation, but it has great positive potential, as well.  Attitude of the three young men involved along with guidance by the coaches are pointing strongly towards the positive.

...is that I'm starting to see "DCaff" as if that is an acceptable nickname or abbreviateion.

It is not.  Veto.

P-Bis, get it?  Because my first initial is P and my last lame begins with "Bis".

McCaffrey's last name doesn't begin with "Caff".  It begins with "Mc".  DCaff is forced, sounds stupid and doesn't fit the rules of nicknaming.

I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

(Having fun yet?)

How about DMC?  I think that meets your criterion.  Yet, Darren McFadden is/was already DMC, so maybe the originator of DCaff was on to something.

My gripe is that I don't want a toned-down version of a starting QB.  I want the fully caffeinated Dylan when he is under center.

I don't have Twitter, but isn't his Twitter handle dcaff something or other? I believe he already had that nickname before Michigan. so if that's what he likes, I'm good with it.

Of course McCaffrey isn't scared of the extra competition when he has two full years of eligibility remaining when Patterson exits, assuming Patterson gets his waiver to play immediately.

I don't understand the McCaffrey fear much. He was already going to be behind Peters (at least in an eligibility sense), so it doesn't make a huge difference if he's now behind a junior Patterson AND Peters. If things play out like we usually expect, McCaffrey was destined to be a backup for a few years, anyway.

I won't lie, this makes me feel more warm and fuzzy about the situation not that it matters at all..  I'm glad Harbaugh sat down with everyone to explain the situation.  We should be loaded at QB for the foreseeable future.  I have a feeling we hurt some of the teams we don't like very very badly next season.  The schedule is tough but the talent on the roster is undeniable.

But how will this affect bowl ticket sales? Can somebody start a thread? Seriously, this is good news. Sounds like Brandon’s parents have instilled values that will serve him well, regardless of how the competition goes. Also good to hear that the coaching staff communicated their intentions to the other QBs.

Hell yeah, that's what I like to hear.

I was thinking about this the other day, and we obviously needed another QB for depth after Speight left. I wondered if some of the people here who were hesitant about bringing in Shea would've felt more comfortable if it was someone less highly rated coming out of high school. Like if was some former 3 star guy for depth, I'm sure no one would have had any objections.

But like Mr. Peters said, of course you should go out and get the very best guy possible.

People would complain more if a QB gets hurt and has to sit out a game... and the next guy up has not taken a snap in a live game.  People complain that OSU has a backup ready to go.

We have depth now, difficult to see any downside!

Gotta believe that young QBs are not afraid of competition and moreover...  gotta believe these guys like the idea of being on a team that, you know... wins...

This is great. Also, Harbaugh showed how this situation will be handled based on what played out this year and last. OKorn transferred here and no one expected Harbaugh to name Speight the starter over him, but he did. There was a sense that Harbaugh must have promised OKorn the job for him to transfer. Harbaugh showed that he will start the best player, period.
