Damar Hamlin medical situation
Anyone watching MNF right now? There is a terrible medical situation unfolding in which Bills LB Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle. There's an ambulance on the field and medics are administering CPR.
This does not look good. Frantic prayers.

Critical condition.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:09 PM ^
It felt weird to +1 that, but considering the alternative...
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:07 PM ^
ESPN just announce he is in critical condition at the hospital. I am taking that as good news and praying he will improve.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:16 PM ^
Need that "but stable" but don't seem to have it. Ugh. C'mon kid.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:27 PM ^
Agreed. Just thinking of the alternative, critical condition is the glass half full view. He is young, otherwise healthy, and now surrounded by bright and talented medical professionals. I really hope he pulls through.
I have never witnessed anything like this in sports. I’m sure many of us haven’t. But when he collapsed, it just seemed different. Heartbreaking.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:08 PM ^
NFL just made an official statement which said in part that Hamlin is "in critical condition." Horrible.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:11 PM ^
It is so very rare that I am speechless, sometimes to my detriment, (apologies for bad posts) but right now I'm completely thoughtless. Shook is the only word I can come up with and that feels like it falls way short. I can't imagine the thoughts or emotions that are going through his parents/family right now. Same with his teammates and everyone else in the organization. My heart goes out to every single one of them and also to Damar himself. This is surreal.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:12 PM ^
Local Fox affiliate is reporting that Damar was shocked twice by the AED. CPR was performed for 9 minutes on the field.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:15 PM ^
I'm just really puzzled by the ambulance waiting for his mom bit. Even if he woke up and was talking, dude just collapsed and required CPR/AED and you don't know why. He can still turn off at any second. You don't wait. You go screaming to the nearest level 1 and bring the family right after in another car like with the cops. You simply don't wait. WTF?!?!?!?!
Of course he is critical. Dude just collapsed and something is seriously wrong. Makes the waiting by the ambulance even more puzzling.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:16 PM ^
Yeah that's medical malfeasance considering the dude is intubated in the ICU now.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:23 PM ^
He's intubated? I had not heard that... damn.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:31 PM ^
If you ever get CPR, you always get intubated. At that point the doctors are going to try and take over and monitor all the critical functions.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:17 PM ^
Yup. Very odd indeed for best and worse case scenarios and everything in between. Are we sure that this actually happened, that the actually ambulance with Hamlin stopped to wait for his mother or any other reason?
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:22 PM ^
No you are right, I dont know anything beyond my quick perusal of shit being posted on twitter. so apologies if this fact is not correct.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:22 PM ^
That's from a tweet from the local Fox sports reporter. There's another local Fox reporter outside the hospital who just reiterated that they waited to get the mom in the ambulance before going to UC Hospital.
January 3rd, 2023 at 7:53 AM ^
Just trying to look at all sides, the mom probably is the person who can make medical care decisions. So having her close may speed some things up for the doctors at the hospital. I don’t know, just throwing out things here. I suspect there is more here than anyone but the people directly involved know.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:20 PM ^
The timing of his collapse literally right after he made that seemingly innocuous tackle makes me think he may have even already had some sort of internal bleeding from a prior play like a bleeding spleen or something. He collapses right after he stands up like he has orthostasis. Either that or there is some freak devastating cardiac injury to lead to acute massive loss in blood pressure like a ruptured heart or aorta. Hope it was just trauma causing arrhythmia like v-tach that they were able to pull him out of and stabilize.
I'll stop my speculating now.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:23 PM ^
This was both horrible and surreal to watch. I’m a surgeon who takes quite a bit of trauma call. My suspicion is commotio cordis, which is sudden death due to blunt force chest trauma. I hope I am wrong. My thoughts and prayers are with Damar and his family. I’m glad the league did the right thing and postponed the game.
January 3rd, 2023 at 11:29 AM ^
That was what a Dr on one of the cable channels also said it could be, basically the chest gets hit right before the heart takes the next beat, or something along those lines. He said getting the heart revived on the field was a good sign, so let's hope that ends up being true.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:26 PM ^
My offensive line coach under me in 2019 who had a pacemaker and defibrillator collapsed and fell on my ankles in the middle of the game. Thankfully for him it was just dehydration that ended up being, but seeing him motionless was what I imagine the players felt today. It really is indescribable
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:34 PM ^
Thing is if it's just dehydration, the fainting actually helps normalize the blood pressure and kinda helps correct the problem. Damar's situation is much more serious. He went down and stayed down.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:27 PM ^
The delay from collapse to CPR was abhorrent medical malpractice.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:33 PM ^
From watching, I couldn't see when it commenced.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:34 PM ^
i didn’t see the event as i happened. But I did see footage of Zeke Upshaw’s collapse shortly after he passed, now unavailable. That lack of action was malpractice. in 2018 all the talk was of concussions. Upshaw staggered around the 3 point line as he went back on defense for Grand Rapids. He fell on his face without any prior contact with anyone. trainer walks out with a towel no pulse check. paramedics walk the stretcher out from the corner of Van Andel about 2-3 minutes later with no sense of urgency. turns out they didn’t try to shock him back to rhythm until in the ambulance. so if you figure the time to strap him on a board and load him into an ambulance he was already dead. so sad.

Agreed that it probably took too long to initiate CPR. I don’t know what an initial survey for a sports injury entails, but my guess is that cardiac arrest is fairly low on the list of conditions or events that the medical team is considering, given the age and peak physical health of the players.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:44 PM ^
Yeah. He seemed to have his faculties about him for a few seconds. TBI would be the first thing I would think of upon arrival.
January 2nd, 2023 at 10:44 PM ^
What are you referring to, trainers were out there immediately. They would be the first to start CPR.
January 5th, 2023 at 2:29 AM ^
Wow, you’re a dumbass

Brought back my memory of Celtics Reggie Lewis collapsing..scary scene

traumatic impact to the heart can cause a lethal arrhythmia. This has been seen in martial arts, baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, and football. in 2022 Lacrosse mandated NOCSAE standards for protection from Commotio Cortis for all players beyond goalie protection. I think these standards should be adopted in all of these sports if they haven’t been already. It seems that football pads have gotten smaller and lighter but i don’t know if they have the same standards for chest protection.

maybe that's good, or at least better than some of the worst possible outcomes?
January 3rd, 2023 at 12:27 AM ^
Weird -- the NFL said they weren't giving any updates tonight. Who is Jordon Rooney?
January 3rd, 2023 at 9:24 AM ^
I believe this is his marketing manager.

Definitely seems like comotio cordis. From timeline the broadcasters gave, it seems they started cpr within 3-4 minutes of his collapse, which is quite good. Survival has been improving form comotio cordis in recent decades, with 58% in the late 2000s which is about 10x as high as other causes of sudden cardiac arrest. Early cpr and defibrillation are associated with improved outcomes, which seems like he received.

This was my thought too. Seems like they got to him quickly enough. Fingers crossed.
January 3rd, 2023 at 12:38 AM ^
The only question is that his breathing never returned. Once the heart restarted why was he not able to breathe. I hope he can make it back to full health.

Local Fox reporting that the Bills are leaving Cincinnati and heading back to Buffalo for what it's worth.
January 3rd, 2023 at 2:39 AM ^
I’d think after experiencing all that they have, they know they can’t all fit in an ICU and weren’t planning to stay tonight anyway. I’d imagine they’d like to be home with their families if they cannot be bedside.

Anyone see this?
https://www.gofundme.com/f/mxksc-the-chasing-ms-foundation-community-toy-drive
Hamlin has a GoFundMe for his Chasing M's Foundation he does (they did a community toy drive, for example) and it's getting heavy action right now. It's going to pass $1 million tonight on a $2,500 goal.
January 3rd, 2023 at 1:05 AM ^
Uh, did I say $1 mil? It's heading to $3 mil right now.
I hope he recovers soon and gets to enjoy the "problem" of how on Earth his foundation is going to use $3-5 million.

That's amazing!

I think we can all agree on one thing after tonight: Twitter is the worst.
January 2nd, 2023 at 11:31 PM ^
I would've agreed on that long before tonight, but point taken.
January 3rd, 2023 at 9:11 AM ^
There's a reason I'm not on it. Its a toxic cesspool that allows people to be the worst versions of themselves. It allows people to hide behind a keyboard and post some truly awful, and in some cases, very damaging material.
I understand the benefit of getting "quick hit" news updates, sports updates and the like, but otherwise, I truly believe that when the book on human history is written, Twitter (and by extension, all of social media) will have played a key part in its downfall. Or at least one of the catalysts that brought about the beginning of the end.

Even if you’ve never taken a first aid class you can save a life!!! Identify and remember where an AED is at your school, work, place of worship & stores. Take 2 minutes to learn how to utilize an Automatic External Defibrillator at the link below. In a life threatening emergency the biggest error can be inaction. seconds matter, take action, whatever you do, do something - call 911, check for responsiveness, get help.
