Damar Hamlin medical situation

Submitted by FrankMurphy on January 2nd, 2023 at 9:08 PM

Anyone watching MNF right now? There is a terrible medical situation unfolding in which Bills LB Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field after making a tackle. There's an ambulance on the field and medics are administering CPR.

This does not look good. Frantic prayers.

Agreed. Just thinking of the alternative, critical condition is the glass half full view. He is young, otherwise healthy, and now surrounded by bright and talented medical professionals. I really hope he pulls through.

I have never witnessed anything like this in sports. I’m sure many of us haven’t. But when he collapsed, it just seemed different. Heartbreaking.

It is so very rare that I am speechless, sometimes to my detriment, (apologies for bad posts) but right now I'm completely thoughtless.  Shook is the only word I can come up with and that feels like it falls way short.  I can't imagine the thoughts or emotions that are going through his parents/family right now.  Same with his teammates and everyone else in the organization.   My heart goes out to every single one of them and also to Damar himself.  This is surreal.

I'm just really puzzled by the ambulance waiting for his mom bit.  Even if he woke up and was talking, dude just collapsed and required CPR/AED and you don't know why.  He can still turn off at any second. You don't wait.  You go screaming to the nearest level 1 and bring the family right after in another car like with the cops.  You simply don't wait.  WTF?!?!?!?!

Of course he is critical.   Dude just collapsed and something is seriously wrong.  Makes the waiting by the ambulance even more puzzling.

Just trying to look at all sides, the mom probably is the person who can make medical care decisions. So having her close may speed some things up for the doctors at the hospital.  I don’t know, just throwing out things here.  I suspect there is more here than anyone but the people directly involved know.

The timing of his collapse literally right after he made that seemingly innocuous tackle makes me think he may have even already had some sort of internal bleeding from a prior play like a bleeding spleen or something.  He collapses right after he stands up like he has orthostasis.  Either that or there is some freak devastating cardiac injury to lead to acute massive loss in blood pressure like a ruptured heart or aorta.   Hope it was just trauma causing arrhythmia like v-tach that they were able to pull him out of and stabilize.

I'll stop my speculating now.

This was both horrible and surreal to watch. I’m a surgeon who takes quite a bit of trauma call. My suspicion is commotio cordis, which is sudden death due to blunt force chest trauma. I hope I am wrong. My thoughts and prayers are with Damar and his family. I’m glad the league did the right thing and postponed the game.

That was what a Dr on one of the cable channels also said it could be, basically the chest gets hit right before the heart takes the next beat, or something along those lines. He said getting the heart revived on the field was a good sign, so let's hope that ends up being true.

My offensive line coach under me in 2019 who had a pacemaker and defibrillator collapsed and fell on my ankles in the middle of the game. Thankfully for him it was just dehydration that ended up being, but seeing him motionless was what I imagine the players felt today. It really is indescribable

i didn’t see the event as i happened.  But I did see footage of Zeke Upshaw’s collapse shortly after he passed, now unavailable.  That lack of action was malpractice.   in 2018 all the talk was of concussions.  Upshaw staggered around the 3 point line as he went back on defense for Grand Rapids.   He fell on his face without any prior contact with anyone.  trainer walks out with a towel no pulse check.  paramedics walk the stretcher out from the corner of Van Andel about 2-3 minutes later with no sense of urgency.  turns out they didn’t try to shock him back to rhythm until in the ambulance.   so if you figure the time to strap him on a board and load him into an ambulance he was already dead.  so sad.

Agreed that it probably took too long to initiate CPR. I don’t know what an initial survey for a sports injury entails, but my guess is that cardiac arrest is fairly low on the list of conditions or events that the medical team is considering, given the age and peak physical health of the players.

traumatic impact to the heart can cause a lethal arrhythmia.  This has been seen in martial arts, baseball, softball, hockey, lacrosse, and football.   in 2022 Lacrosse mandated NOCSAE standards for protection from Commotio Cortis for all players beyond goalie protection.  I think these standards should be adopted in all of these sports if they haven’t been already.   It seems that football pads have gotten smaller and lighter but i don’t know if they have the same standards for chest protection.

Definitely seems like comotio cordis. From timeline the broadcasters gave, it seems they started cpr within 3-4 minutes of his collapse, which is quite good. Survival has been improving form comotio cordis in recent decades, with 58% in the late 2000s which is about 10x as high as other causes of sudden cardiac arrest. Early cpr and defibrillation are associated with improved outcomes, which seems like he received.

There's a reason I'm not on it. Its a toxic cesspool that allows people to be the worst versions of themselves. It allows people to hide behind a keyboard and post some truly awful, and in some cases, very damaging material.

I understand the benefit of getting "quick hit" news updates, sports updates and the like, but otherwise, I truly believe that when the book on human history is written, Twitter (and by extension, all of social media) will have played a key part in its downfall. Or at least one of the catalysts that brought about the beginning of the end.

Even if you’ve never taken a first aid class you can save a life!!!  Identify and remember where an AED is at your school, work, place of worship & stores.   Take 2 minutes to learn how to utilize an Automatic External Defibrillator at the link below.  In a life threatening emergency the biggest error can be inaction. seconds matter, take action, whatever you do, do something - call 911, check for responsiveness, get help.
