Could Michigan win tomorrow with me as the QB?

Submitted by 1464 on

Seeing as Jake Rudddock may or may not be healthy enough to start tomorrow, I felt this would be an appropriate question.

If I were to start as the QB for Michigan tomorrow and play the entirety of the game, would Michigan still win?

I guess in this exercise, my abilities as a QB are probably pretty inconsequential.  For a random person off the street, I'd be a 8.5/10 in terms of QB abilities.  You probably wouldn't mind having me on your flag football team, but I wouldn't wow anyone either.  In terms of a college QB, though, I would be a -6/10.  I don't know the scheme.  I haven't played organized football in 13 years (and 50 lbs).

The real point of this post is to determine whether people think that Michigan can pull off a win despite any and all shortcomings at the QB position.  Should we be worried if Jake is in street clothes, or should we still be able to shrug it off and expect a comfortable win?

Probably not. They would bring the house on every down knowing that the chances of you completing a pass are about as good as you throwing an interception, considering you have zero knowledge of the offensive playbook and you haven't been coached on any film.
That being said, I would be willing to bet that the best QB on the sidelines tomorrow will be the old guy in Khakis, but he doesn't have any more eligibility.

We have a popgun offense that has great difficulty scoring when it doesn't start drives in its opponents' territory, and we just escaped with the ugliest of victories against a big underdog.  I'm not feeling especially cocky.

You can say what you want about Rudock, but his job is to win games.  With the exception of Utah, he's done everything required for us to be 7-1 given this teams composition (I don't put MSU on him...that was a disruption in the football space-time continuum).

Sure, I'd like him to land the long bomb occassionally.  But he has been doing pretty much what is asked of him to date.

Our defense and special teams are very good, and they were the main reason we had that lead over MSU.  Our offense isn't very good; that's the reality.  It has struggled frequently this season.  Thankfully, we regularly win the field position battle to help it out.  If for whatever reason we don't win that battle, we could end up in a close game.  We have had trouble mounting extended drives pretty much all season.

With you, No.  With Speight, or Morris, or probably even one of the true freshmen, yes.  Rudock will play by all indications, Speight got a confidence builder and will feel more comfortable whenever he gets in again, so qb things are looking up.

Morris situation is a head scratcher for me, but I trust JH to know the right way to select a qb, including the right way to handle Morris, and for whatever reason, Morris is just not part of the mix this year.  Speight came through in the clutch, after looking Bellomy-esque for a while, and I applaud him for that.  I don't blame Bellomy, I blame the people who engineered that state of qb problems.

For tomorrow, I am glad we have Rudock because that is JH's choice.  Longer term, I know we are going to see someone better than Rudock, but I am certainly grateful he became Blue.

If I ever suited up at QB against any D1 defensive line I would have to wear my brown pants underneath the Maize ones but since this is against Rutgers i'd predict Michigan 73 Rutgers -4.

Doesn't this somewhat depend on who the RB will be?  If Smith is dinged up then it could be more interesting.

Better question, can you throw a deep ball better than Rudock?  We know he can't and that kind of cost us a couple games....

Now I'm sad because I remembered those losses...

And my ability to play QB is similar to Peppers, except I cannot throw except sidearm and am not nearly as fast.  I'm more like fast for a FB with a WR build.  In other words I'd get murdered if I did anything but hand off for my boy Drakey J.

I have ran through drywall before though, messy but doable as long as you know where the studs are to avoid.

To answer the question: No. I took it serious, too! I found it amusing as my brother and I have always joke that if we were born with genetics that made us 6-2+ we'd have been All-Americans lol. I took it seriously but the answer is no. Finally, we fans shouldn't overlook ANYONE this much with the offense we have. We are literally below average - average in every offensive capability this season. Why is that important? When you're simply lining it up and playing muscle on muscle you give inferior talent a chance. EVERY TEAM has strong players. They may not be talented but they can generally knock heads with you and create a stalemate if you're not playing very well. We don't stress a defense in any way at the moment and that allows bad teams to have a much greater chance. I think we'll win but I'm done looking at any opponent like we all did Minnesota and everyone the last decade. If our defense has another bad game and our offense is as blegh as we've been all year, Rutgers has a chance. Small but a chance. We're not Baylor, TCU, Bama or osu. We go muscle on muscle with a mediocre offense.

No, if you take anyone off the street and we don't only lose, but lose bad. Putting aside that you don't know the plays, which is kind of important. The defense would put 9 guys in the box, OL would be overwhelmed and the running game would go backwards all day. May actually get some RBs hurt. Any attempt to throw would have a better chance of being picked off then anything else, trying to throw against a D1 CB is a bit different than flag football with friends. It would be 3 and outs and pick sixes all day. Our defense would eventually tire and start giving up points in chunks.

The defense would adjust with 11 men in the box and take their chances.

If I can respectfully state the thing I wish our offense could find is the dagger.  We needed that against MSU and it wasn't there.  Too many 3&outs put them in position to do what they did.

I had the same sick feeling when Rudock got hurt.  Kudos to Speight for finding the mojo but lucky to have a short field.

Would like to come out and take Rutgers to task early and mentally break them before halftime.  First stringers need a rest due to 2 road games + Ohio St.

Maryland was not good at the football; we beat them handily. Minnesota was not good at the offense; we did not beat them handily. Rutgers is not good at the football; we shall see tomorrow if we can beat them handily.

I think you could and I definitely think I could if I was able to practice with the team all week. The only problem is if I get hit. I only weigh 180 and if I got hit by a DT I would be down for the count.
