Confessions of a Michigan Football Fan
11 Warriors has an interesting piece on their site where they "invite you (their readers) to spill your sins, real or perceived, against Ohio State athletics." It makes for a fun/entertaining read and I thought we Michigan fans probably have plenty of interesting thoughts to spill as well.
So I guess I'll start with my 3 confessions:
-I love Ann Arbor to death, but I don't think it's the best college town in the Big Ten. I think that privilege goes to Madison.
-I'm a Hoke fan, and I love Mattison and think Nussmeier was a great pick up, but State has the best all-around football staff/coaches in the Big Ten. Hands down.
-Here's my big one... Had we played Nebraska in a BCS Championship-like game back in '97, I think they would've won.
Bonus: I LOVE the movie "Rudy" and have no real negative feelings toward Notre Dame at all.

Leave out the corporate stuff from michigan Stadium. Enough Douche! Duh!
Let the UM Band play. No more piped in music. TURN UP the volume on the band.
Bring back Michigan Replay tards.
The only thing I really want to mention, and this probably applies to more fanbases than just UM, but there is nothing more upsetting to me than when I see UM fans complain about a kid that just committed to Michigan (football or basketball) for not being rated high enough by the services or questioning why the Michigan coaches would offer X recruit. As someone that played basketball at a school in the MVC after not receiving an offer from my dream school (obviously Michigan), I find these types of comments incredibly disrespectful and often times hurtful.
I catch myself humming the OSU fight song from time to time.
Oh my God. I have this same problem, as well as MSU and ND's fight song.
I have enough problems. I'm really glad I don't have yours.
And the amount of posts talking about poop is amazing. Guys bragging about players pooping on locker room floor and bird poop. I can picture them laughing like Beavis and Butthead when they are writing their comments.
One more:
I love the piped in music... They just need to change it up from the same four songs they always use.
No one in sports anywhere does that. Stadiums are like ClearChannel on steroids. Instead of the same 40 songs over and over, it's the same four.
One more:
I feel it's wrong to fault people for accidentally double posting.
You missed an opportunity here to deploy the rarely-utilized deliberate double post for the lols.
You missed an opportunity here to deploy the rarely-utilized deliberate double post for the lols.
Huh?
Another one of my pet peeves is when a 16-18 year old kid picks a school to attend for a sport but it's not YOUR school so that fan starts bashing the kid and wishing ill will towards him. I've never got how a grown man or woman could be sooo enraged about a high school teenager's decison to attend college. Some people need to get their priorities in order.
I listen to Valenti & Foster. A lot.
And sometimes I LOL
^ This. His CRAZY takes on Michigan football are not that far off sometimes which disappoints me greatly.
ridiculoulsly off the mark. There are 3 people in the world who I think I would punch for no particular reason other than the fact that they stood before me: Kim Jong-un, Justin Bieber, and Mike Valenti.
I think MSU has a great coaching staff.
I like their uniforms. I did not like them when they used that brighter ugly shade of green, but since the switched to dark green it looks pretty good.
Rose Bowl should not be the goal anymore. Goal every year should be national championship. Striving for the Rose Bowl only makes it okay to eff up non conference games. The Rose Bowl is basically meaningless in the years it's not part of the playoffs.
I hate fans that get so jacked up about recruiting. Great recruiting alone does not win you anything.
I think outside of 1997 Lloyd's teams underachieved A LOT.
Seven Nation Army sucks.
The only alternate uniforms I liked were these. I don't care if we got smashed while wearing them.
Those were sweet. I don't know why everyone hated them.
I liked those too, although I would like to see them with blue pants.
I'd rather watch a game at Yost than at Michigan Stadium. It's much more entertaining.
I have spent time on this site when I should have been doing what my wife asked me to do last month.
I have spent time posting on this site that I regret almost immediately upon posting. I feel this way pretty much everytime I post.
I love soccer. I hate soccer. I'm confused most of the time.
When I played my final high school football game - I went back to the lockeroom, sat down and cried like the baby I am - knowing I would never play another down.
I'm defined by my failures and hatreds. I hate myself for that.
I normally do too, but that one's just true.
- OSU's fight song is as mediocre as their fanbase's mean IQ, but MSU's fight song has a pretty catchy tune and gets a bonus point for use of 'Vim'
- ...but I'd get sick of it real fast if the band played it after every time their defense tallied a TFL against us.
- Columbus as an overall city is a decent, B+ place to live.
- I am seriously starting to wonder if I will ever see us win The Game in Columbus before I retire/die.
- OSU as an academic institution is actually an OK school and 75% of the alums are actually decent enough fans/people
- My goodwill towards Hoke and co. extends through 2014 but no further.
- Anyone on MGoBlog that shit-talks a (non-criminal) kid that decommits from Michigan and/or chooses another school should be banned from the site, full stop.
I often think that OSU and MSU fans are more aggessive and hateful and wonder if that is an indication of their programs as a whole and why they have rode roughshod over us for the past 5-8 years.
So were we more aggressive and hateful when we were dominating State?
I think we should have "let" Lloyd retire after 2005 and gone after Dantonio then. A former OSU assistant did wonders for this program in the '70s and I imagine Dantonio would have done the same for Michigan in the late '00s early '10s
I once killed 5 hookers and blamed Craig James.
I have had season tickets for a few years now, and I think that the Marching Band plays "The Victors" wayyyy too much. When nobody is clapping or doing the fist pump in the air thing anymore, you know it's being over done.
I fear what will happen in East Lansing this fall.
I love the pom poms especially for night games, it makes everything feel more collegiate.
I wish they would give out towels again instead of pom poms like they did for Nebraska in 2011.
- The most damning damnation of that damn Dave Brandon was re-scheduling Appy State for 2014. That alone is arguable as a firing offense for damaging the M brand. Losing to Appalachian State in 2007 is like having a sex tape leaked of you making sexytime with some homely farm girl and then you can't get it up. Scheduling Appalachian State in 2014 is like bringing a limo over to the farm girl's place in your best tux to take her to prom and show off how suave you really are.
are my hero.
2 - I cheer for all teams that wear the maize and blue, but I'm more emotionally tied in the hockey program than football/basketball. The hockey program continues with the old school collegiate team feel, even despite the horrid renovations (covering up the beautiful history of Yost Fieldhouse with steel and glass....ugh...love the windows though so pros and cons...)
3 - I'm one of those people that love the "Michigan Man" term... Not in the sense of differentiating between people, but rather in the sense of how it creates a set of standards and ideals for all those affiliated with the University to aspire to, myself included.
4 - I think Bo is overrated as the coach who made this program. Yost, Yost, Yost and more Yost. This is the guy who built the Big House, popularized the sport, innovated positions and the forward pass, and instilled that famous sense of arrogance in AA. Don't get me wrong - I love Bo - just think Yost needs more love.
Oh and one more that I forgot. I LOVE In the Big House. I don't care if it's corny. Maybe because it takes me back to Under the Lights or because 2011 was a pretty good season, but I wish we would continue to play it at games. It seemed to get the fans pumped up which is what we want. Better than Don't Stop Believing and all the other junk that we play over and over.
I don't like the song, but it got way more shit than it deserved. I hate all the piped-in music, but if you're going to play mediocre pop songs, they might as well be about Michigan.
I don't think the people who sold their tickets for that game would have helped with a home field advantage anyway. I stood for the whole game and yelled my ass off as did a lot of other sections which never happens.
I miss Lloyd.
This.
There needs to be an event where out of state students learn about the tradition or something. I'm sure it would help.
