Committee says Michigan better than MSU

"At the end of the day, we felt Michigan was a better team and to be ranked ahead of Michigan State," Iowa athletic director and playoff committee chair Gary Barta said on ESPN after the rankings were revealed.

The facts don't lie and MSU passing defense is the worst. The Committee knew Sparty had lots of help winning that game against Michigan by the refs.

While the next three weeks will see things shake out for Sparty, Michigan and even Penn State and OSU, it's nice to see justice was served against MSU. It was a nice of saying overrated to them.

I have conflicting thoughts.

If I were ranking the teams, I'd probably still have MSU over UM right now. Like Joel Klatt says, at some point the actual results on the field have to matter. It shouldn't just be a test of which team is better...it should be a test of which team has the better resume and has won games

That being said, I don't think having UM over MSU is egregious or indefensible. I think far too many people overvalue H2H in a ranking like this - because most teams don't even play each other anyway, and why should a ranking of two teams be distilled into the results of one game? I mean nobody's putting Purdue ahead of MSU just because Purdue beat them. That would be silly.  So yeah, it's OK to have OSU over Oregon, because while Oregon won in Columbus and that's a big deal, their loss is terrible and they've been in a lot of close games in a crappy conference. Of course, OSU hasn't been that much better necessarily, but they haven't really had a scare since that Oregon game and that probably counts for something. Same thing with UM - obviously MSU has the better win, and the fact that it was H2H does count for a little bit...but they also have a far worse loss than Michigan, and Michigan isn't exactly devoid of good wins either (the dominating win at Camp Randall looks better and better every week).

And who knows maybe the committee agrees that Michigan was hosed by the refs in that game. MSU fans should be just as upset about officiating - their one marquee win is tainted by the refs. They had a breakout Heisman-like performance, and people aren't remembering the game for that.

The problem with the CFP is they make up reasons as they go, and seem to value one reason over another arbitrarily.

The best part of all of this is that national consensus appears to be that Michigan is the better team despite losing that game. I love that. Absolute best case scenario in a heartbreaking loss. I think too many people have lizard brains of "if team A beats team B then team A is better". That's not how sports have worked, like, ever.

David Pollack, Paul Finebaum hating this morning

Let's hope this adds even more fuel to the fire for the team. The HaterAid is strong for Michigan when they do well and there is crazy talk if Alabama loses to Georgia they should still warrant consideration for the CFP.

Win out and this noise goes away.

What will MGoBlog b*tch about once Harbaugh and company make the CFP?

:-)

I mean losing a single H2H matchup by 4 amid that disgusting slew of overturned calls, the statistical reality, and the massive turd MSU shat with the Boilermakers - I agree.

Michigan wins that contest 80 times out of 100, I have no doubt. On a neutral field it's more like 95, and it would be more of a slaughter than a close win in those games.

Michigan outplayed MSU and though I rarely make this argument, was also screwed by the refs on the strip sack/fumble/TD.  Michigan deserves to leapfrog Sparty.  Also, Mel Tucker looks dumb in camo.

I haven't seen a single one of these talking head bitch-fests about the ranking EVEN MENTION the Purdue loss.  Which I think is JUST AS IMPORTANT as the 4 pt loss head to head.  It's absolute insanity to completely ignore the Purdue game, just to focus on the head to head.  And the fact that the committee chairman didn't bring it up either, only fuels the fire.  Head to head, it was within a touchdown.  MSU got blown off the field by an UNRANKED PURDUE TEAM!!!  I understand that head to head games should matter, but so should their complete implosion against a team, according to their ranking, should have demolished.
