Chris Balas on Brandon Peters: "There are recruiting mistakes, and this appears to have been a big one."

Meanwhile Michigan had 4 passing yards in the 2nd half vs IU. I don't really know what to say about this if true, but thought it was extremely noteworthy.

The competetion in offseason was legit.  The coaching staff was very impressed with Wilton going to CA still on the mend and working with other top qb's and coaches in country.  When the team returned from Rome it was all still up in the air.  They rolled the balls out and Speight was the top choice.  However, only by the smallest margin over o'korn.  Don't forget O'korn best friend is Jake Rudock who is around the team on a monthly basis and also speaks to JOK and coach weekly.   We all know one thing with coach and that is he's a very loyal guy.  This upset Peters and although he may not be a very local guy, his father is not as quiet.  (Any of you who were around the team the past 5 years think Morris' father, maybe worse).

Peters is your quasi great practice guy.  Wins all the drills, most accurate, and so on.  However most the time it's against the 2's or 3's, and when the lights come on it's not always the same precision (full pad scrimmage). With all that being said, the past 3 weeks you can see him getting more engaged.  Last Wednesday him and coach Pep were working together for over 2 hours and in film he's coming along as well.  I firmly believe we will see Peters versus Rutgers and Maryland at a min. The coaches need to see for themselves if he's one of these kids who just has a lightbulb go off and preform their best on the biggest stage.  A very rare occurance, but something that they need to find out, and the only way that happens is getting him into real game snaps.  The coaches know this, they also thought if they coach up Speight and Okorn and they preform we have a chance at being in the playoff with this defense.  Either way, from what I understand the line has been drawn in the sand.  If Dmac is in front of Peters on depth chart next year, and WS on the team Brandon will leave, and most likely with a degree, and be eligible immedately.  I highly doubt it, but some of my friends think coach shakes Wilton hand at end of the season as well.  In that scenario I believe BP stays whether he's the one or the two based on their commitment in letting Wilton go. Lastly, PSU under the lights is no place to roll out Peters.  Malzone is behind Dmac, so anyone asking he will be graduating in Spring and not back next year. Go Blue beat PSU! In coach I trust

This is some good information, and I'm inclined to believe it because its stuff that makes sense.   And what makes sense is more likely true than some out of the blue hawt take we so see so much of.  But question - can you tell us what access you have, or how you've gained this information?  Not asking for names, or position, or any details, just a general feel for where it came from.

PSU under the lights is no place to roll out Peters

If the issue is uncertainty whether Peters is ready to handle the heat of the kitchen, then this is absolutely true.  PSU under the lights is second only to OSU in the Shoe.

Interesting. As far as Peter's dad being a factor, I heard somewhere recently that BP's parents have a place up in Ann Arbor. Don't know if they means they moved up full time or if it's just a small condo or something for frequent trips.

Hopefully it's a pure meritocracy, but coaches are human too. Wouldn't shock me if annoying or pushy behavior from a kids parent could at least play a marginal role in the decisions if the players were close in ability in practice.

Plus we had/have an offense that is young. It's possible some of this is the raw WR and OL. Once those start to look more reliable then putting one of the young guys out at QB seems to be less risky.

I appreciate the information and detail. I also envy your access to the team! I'm sure it's a great experience!

Admittedly, though, your post frustrated me more than made me feel better! Peters sounds like the clear, most-talented player; yet, when game time comes he struggles. I mean, we've already gone through two QBs that pretty much do the same thing. So, is there a way to coach up the guy who is by all accounts the best QB on the roster to becoming the best game-time QB on the roster too?! I guess I just don't get it...

This is what's so incredibly frustrating. If he isn't a good QB I get it. But if he is the most physically talented QB we have then he needs to see the field. He had the best QB performance in the spring game too. What is really going on? Is it some sort of grudge match between the personalities of Harbaugh and Peters?

O'Korn was 3rd string and didn't even get consistent snaps until less than 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter. Sessa almost got as many snaps as O'Korn. 80% of the plays went to Speight and Peters. The pick 6 was definitely a bad decision but the receiver saw the defender and suddenly stopped his route, literally letting the defender catch it uncontested. If Eubanks puts any effort there it should end up a pass break up. I read Peters didn't look bad in Rome.

First off I got negged for agreeing with a guy who was saying the same as you guys are about JOK. I guess we used a bad word or something. It is just about his play, he is a good dude. I don't know how knowledgable everyone is on here but you can see the difference in talent and stature between JOK and Peters. Peters should be playing period. He delivered one simple pass and I could see the difference in just how he looks out there. I am thinking this is something else other than who is better.

This is a very pecular statement from Balas as I believe in a interveiw he agreed Peters should get the start. I may be wrong, he was interveiwing Doug Skene I believe. Jason Peters is by far the most talented QB on this roster, with d-mac also very talented but younger. Harbaugh doesn't like his leadership as far as how voiceterous he is calling plays. Someone said something about intangeables and I think you are spot on. As far as talent though it isnt even close so don't understand Balas at all. I am sure this is as frustrating for everyone as it is to me.

So why is he third on the depth chart and would be 4th if DM was not red shirting? Is his footwork better? Plays well under pressure or duress? Leadership or mastery of the offense? An open competition for the spot and he did not win it in fall camp and the staff is wrong? You may get your wish if things don't improve. Just be careful what you wish for....

Sam Webb says Peters is the most talented QB on the team and that the notion he would be behind McCaffrey is not true. Not saying you're not right, but there is clearly conflicting info out there right now and someone is wrong.

What happened to Meritocracy? Seems more like the Good Ole Boy Network and the NFL fraternity protecting each other.  They don't want Peters to get a leg up on McCaffrey while he redshirts.

I'm going with Sam on this as well. And also the eye test. It doesn't take a genius to see which guy has the most talent. Peters has the tools. JOK does not. McCaffrey does have the tools as well but he is just tiny right now. He will get bigger and be fine.

I think it was Brock Huard yesterday that said while on the sideline, Peters "just looked different than the other QB's" and he said that in a very complimentary way.  I think JOK has the physical tools as well, but he doesn't see the field well and thus does not make good decisions.  We dominated that game yesterday in spite of the poor QB play including 2 delay of game penalties.  The 16 penalties and not getting the ball snapped on the shovel pass to Hill were what allowed that game to go to OT.  Otherwise we win comfortably even with the 25.6 QBR.

Clearly the fan base has spoken and it's all of those things. You're inside information is wrong. The fans are at the games and can see Peters. Based on this, we've concluded that he's taller, throws excellent balls in warmups, and would surely lead us to the Super Bowl if he were just allowed to start.

It sure seems like a major recruiting miss or the staff has failed to develop him. He’s had almost two full years on campus but still can’t beat out a true freshman and a guy who just threw for 58 yards.

That's the million dollar question we all want answered.  What is it that is keeping him from playing?  We all watch a lot of football and know the difference between great, average, lousy QB play and everything in between.  Our eyes are saying "hey...surely there must be a better option in one of the young QB's and if not, what is the reason".  That is all we want to know.  Until then, these QB threads will run rampant.
