Check out this year's maize & blue Tigers hat!
Last year there was big to do about the maize and blue Tigers hat that Jim Harbaugh wore when he threw out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game in June. The hat was a giveaway that the Tigers gave at the annual Wolverines in the D event which benefits a UM Scholarship that goes to M studetns who have financial need caused by cancer in their family. Unfortunately MDen and New Era stole a little of the thunder by selling copies of the hat but the Tigers still managed to help raise early $15,000 for the scholarship.
This year's date for Wolverines in the D is set for Friday, August 19th agianst the Red Sox and the hat design is pretty cool AND will not be copied by New Era so there is only one way to get it. Here's this year's hat:

This is part of their University Days promotion. They do a day for each school just like they've done for years. Giveaway is always in the school colors and the design is always the same whether its a hat (like this year and last year) or t-shirt (which they did for the three years prior).
Have the Tigers ever done or have they ever thought about doing the university color scheme with jerseys too? There probably isn't much leeway in regards to MLB's licenseing policies but a maize and blue script Tigers jersey would look pretty sweet I bet.
It seems that the farthest MLB gets from standard colors is the pink for breast cancer awareness.
Maybe you'd like the design more if you weren't looking down your nose at it.
I love the Maize and Blue, but that is one ugly-ass hat.
Yeah... This is real, real bad. Which is pretty much par for the course with MLB alternate stuff meant for things like batting practice and promotions like this.

The fact that they are coming out with a new one, means I will probably buy it and as a result, I may be forced to become a Tigers Fan.

The hat last year is way better. Hats should be one primary color. I also hate hats that have that solid thing in it to make it stick up. I don't know what that thing is called.

Not sure about the stealing of thunder though. When was the scholarship drive the OP mentioned? When I bought mine at Foot Locker, it was in November and I had no idea they could be purchased (I rarely do brick and mortar shopping) or were an incentive to giving towards a scholarship program.
last year's was awesome and if anything it's a shame that the Tigers didn't make it a regular item in their store. But this one eh..too many hat designers focus on gimmicks and forget that there's a reason the plain navy Yankees hat is the top selling hat in the world.

This one is way better... take it from me, I've had one similar to the one released last year since Moe's first started selling them about 5 years ago and people simply can't differentiate between the dark blue of the hat and black. Adding the block M helps, but this one really drives it home.
Plus, you know, they sell more hats this way.

That hat looks like it was on sale at a gas station or car wash.
Whether that's a good thing, or a not-so-good thing is up to you.
