From ESPN Boston:  “Per ESPN's Field Yates: The Patriots have signed third-round draft pick DE Chase Winovich, per a source. The deal is four years and totals $3,827,312, with a $997,312 signing bonus.”

I wish I could get a signing bonus when obtaining

It's highly overrated.  It's taxed at 35% rather than regular payroll.  I'd rather have the bump in salary.

Also, relocation expenses are for employment aren't tax deductable like they used to be.

A lot of companies are using, ahem, sign on bonuses as a retention mechanism.

I worked for a shithole of a firm that gave me a large bonus.  You have to pay it back if you leave after 1 to 2 years... depending on offer letter wording.  Hypothetically let's say you get a 10K bonus.  You only see $6,500.  But if you leave you have to fork out the $3,500 out of your own pocket.

I wanted to leave after the first month.  It was clear they grossly misrepresented the job to me and lied their asses off to get me.  I tried to deny payment of the bonus and OGC was having none of that.  I even hired an employment lawyer.  Which in turn OGC just kept on with stalling and paperwork tactics to make me burn through me retainer.  So I ended up having to do a year with that firm before I left.

That really sucks about the paying back the bonus part but your idea that your bonus was taxed at a different rate than regular income is totally incorrect. Bonus income is standard w2 income. Your employer may have withheld 35% but bonus is not magically taxed different when your w2 comes out at the end of the year.

Dude, you’re not paying attention. The check may have had X amount withheld but come tax time all your gross w2 income is treated the same. So if too much was paid to the irs on that check you would get that money back as a tax refund when you filed taxes. If that happens again you can have your employer withhold less by filling out a new w4 form with more exemption boxes checked.

Or or you can be dumb and think the bonus check is taxed differently. Read the article you linked. Withheld is not the same as taxed.

He'll play well throughout the contract and get a much bigger offer from another team when it's time to re-up. Probably the Lions.

Very cool. Think he will fit in well with their system. On the other side, they are noted for drafting system fit at a higher weight than "top of the board" sensibilities, so it has to be flattering and certainly excited to get picked up and paid by their organization.

He'll be a household name soon enough... I'm sure other endorsements will come along as he begins playing. That charisma will get him just as far as his performance on the field.

Mo money!

Welcome to Boston Chase.  He's going to instantly be a favor favorite and regular on Inside Track (Boston version of Page Six).  Tough place is Boston, been 109 days since we've celebrated a professional championship!  Guess 3 out 4 ain't bad, right Kyrie!!!

Hope he puts $2MM in an index fund. However, he is just as likely to make a big donation to ChadTough. Or maybe make a Praire Dog sanctuary/amusement park in his backyard.

SI had an article a while ago on how pro ath lose their money. I forgot who, but a well known NBA players lost $100K(?) on his friend's business--which was selling little life rafts that you store under your couch. So that, if your house floods, it inflates and saves your couch.
