Chances With CBB Portal Players

Submitted by OrjiInTheEndzone on April 3rd, 2024 at 12:10 PM

I'm newer to MGoBlog so I don't know if people ever ask these questions on here lol! But with that being said, I wanted to see if anyone here has a good idea of our chances landing these players:

Vladislav Goldin (FAU Transfer)

Johnell Davis (FAU Transfer)

Danny Wolf (Yale Transfer)

Cade Tyson (Belmont Transfer)

Connor Essegian (Wisconsin Transfer)

Mike James (Louisville Transfer)

I know that these are some of the players Michigan has reached out to, but I haven't really checked if there have been any updates on any of these players. Can someone fill me in on our chances of landing any of these guys? Thanks and Go Blue!

Check the front page for Brian's thoughts/insights.

FWIW - I think M is a near "lock" for any FAU player* that is in the portal that the coach wants -- the caveat -- both FAU players you list currently that are in the portal have also declared for the draft so there is a chance they do not return to college.

* Standard M admissions restrictions apply - In general this means --- grad transfers, incoming recruits, and true freshman who don't have enough credits / advanced courses to get dinged by admissions rules.

There's little doubt in my mind that Admissions standards are going to change - nor, do I want them to.   Michigan's academic reputation is reflected in a number of ways - and, as a fan, alum, and parent of students - it's nice to see players in post game interviews actually answer questions in a coherent and thoughtful manner.   It was always a pleasure to hear JJ or Blake speak with reporters.

I'm hoping that the "conversation" between May, Manuel, and Beilein touched on academic standards and that May is proactively engaging the Admissions staff to ensure targeted players - either in high school recruiting or the portal - don't receive an "11th hour surprise".

The recruits that people have complained most about were Terrence Shannon and Caleb Love,  both seniors. Transfers with that standing are just never getting admitted to Michigan with enough transfer credits to qualify for the NCAA's definition of "remains in good academic standing."

The team recruited Shannon thinking he was going to be a grad transfer, but he ended up one class short and Texas Tech didn't have any incentive to help him graduate. I assume they thought the same about Love. The football team has not had trouble getting sophomores admitted (Josiah Stewart) and they even showed they could work with LSA/Admissions to get Miles Hinton admitted. The one notable football issue was with Xavier Worthy, who wanted to enroll early with online credits from a barely accredited charter school. Admissions rightly told him to just finish the year.

The standards are fairly clear and both admissions and LSA have shown they'll work as much as they can to allow transfers to happen, but they're not going to let someone take one class at UM and get a UM degree.

And neither does the University of Illinois grant a degree for one course, except somehow they did with Shannon.  And I'm sure others have done similar things, even 30 credits when 60 are required.  The NCAA allows a significant amount of extra benefits and such for student athletes, but academics is generally not one of them (there are exceptions, I've been involved in granting some).  An exception to grant a degree with just a course or two has not seemed an allowable academic exception to me.  I doubt the NCAA is paying any attention to this, but UM is.  And you are correct, " they're not going to let someone take one class at UM and get a UM degree."  And as an alum, I don't want them to do so.

Danny Wolf is almost done. They had an in-home visit yesterday, and he's a do-not-contact transfer -- so Michigan appears to have a huge lead.

Goldin and Davis will drag out bc they'll go through the whole pre-draft process. That might actually favor Michigan a bit, bc we won't have to "save a spot" with our multitude of open spots. Other schools might not be able to wait it out if other transfer prospects are being considered.

If Michigan lands Akeem Miskdeen (UGA asst) and/or Adam Howard (IU Grad Asst) things could really pick up in a number of different directions (Rooths, McNeeley, Nelly Davis, etc).

Also keep tabs on Boynton's players from Oklahoma State. When he was fired, his best players jumped in the portal. This included a couple top-40 (out of HS) freshmen -- Dailey & Garrison. Dailey had Michigan interest out of HS.

The dream scenario would be getting the older players from FAU, guys like Wolf & Essegian with 2 years left, a player or two from Oklahoma State with 2/3 years left, and then reeling in Rooths and/or McNeeley out of HS (possibly with help from new asst/staff hires). That would set up layers of players on different timelines, rather than just a one year stopgap of FAU transfers.

Pretty much said the same thing on the front page post. Wolf & Essigian is your 2022 class. Get Dailey and convince GW3 to come back. That is your 2023 class. Rooths and Brooks is your 2024. And given that we are already halfway through the 2025 cycle, I don't hate the idea of taking one of those flyer guys from FAU's class and redshirting them so you have a start on the 2025 class, which will need 3-5 guys.

I think the biggest thing ppl are forgetting is that yes Goldin & Davis have that direct tie to their coach and Michigan. But the blue bloods might also be in contact. Will they want that personal connection with their coach(🤞🏾) or opt for instance a UNC(👎🏾) to improve their chances of winning next season.

I’m always confused by these can we discuss this topic that’s been discussed endlessly posts. It’s important enough to start a new thread but not to read the front page article specifically about this topic? Nor the post 4 below this one? You previously didn’t care about this topic but suddenly on Wednesday at noon you got a basketball jones that needed a quick fix?

4 of the 6 are highly likely in my mind, pending admissions office and annual credits not transferring shenanigans.

Cade and Mike, not sure on.  Essegian is a life-long Michigan fan, and Danny Wolf is reported to be a strong possibility.

I think the Oakland kid is a real possibility too, but Toledo guard was hot news for awhile, but is being pursued any many others right now.

I thinks going to be raining transfer (actual) commits soon now that two Assistants are in the door.
