CFB Risk Episode 25 - In West Philadelphia, Born and Raised (F*ck OSU)

Pre-Recap Announcements:

  • Here are the ways for how you can choose your level of involvement with the team – use only one method within the same turn:
    • Michigan Rebel Base:If you would like to see/discuss overall strategy and choose your daily mission from a list of approved targets, use the Discord link (https://discord.gg/DRQyjp56kP)
      • Note: if already using Discord, please do not change to another method.
    • If you want a simple order to follow, use the new orders distribution website (http://www.whataremyorders.com/).
    • And for anybody who wants to choose their own adventure (or the above links don't work), feel free to hit any of these territories tonight to help the cause!
      • Ohio State
        • Ann Arbor
        • Bowling Green
        • Chicago
        • West Point
      • Wisconsin
        • Regina

First, let's point out the obvious -- none of the targets above are Texas A&M. Yes, we know. And you want to know why? Because if you look at the leaderboard, ourselves, A&M, and OSU have 1 region between the three of us, and it belongs to OHIO STATE.

OSU and Georgia Tech have been playing footsie, and now Ohio State has the makings of a Bucky Death Star in my backyard!!!!

As a Native Philadelphian, I've been content to let my city suffer under Buckeye rule as Michigan swept south. NO LONGER. Ohio State has become too powerful, and it's time to retake my homeland! Oh, and what color is Ann Arbor? Buckeye Grey! The f*ck???

Unfortunately, we can't take Philly back tonight, but we can bring the full force of the Rebel Army to retake Ann Arbor and key parts of the Midwest as well as crash into the Tri-State area. SO LET'S F*CKING DO IT.

To be clear, the Aggies are still a problem, and we're not going to withdraw from the South just because the Buckeyes are eating cheesesteaks. But we need to refocus ourselves, because this chart is scary as hell...

Chart? YES CHART!

OSU's regional bonus means their power this turn is almost equal to our own. And they are within striking distance of FOUR MORE. If we aren't careful, they are going to build a Bucky Death Star that makes the Aggie Death Star look positively quaint in comparison.

We have the raw star and player advantage and we need every bit of that AND MORE. Unfortunately, though, our powerful Rebel Army -- including the Michigan Rogue Force -- will not be able to win if OSU is operating at 350% power. And so, we must turn our attention east....

MAP. MAP INDEED!!!!

Elsewhere on the Map...

  • Caribbean: Oh, did I forget to mention that OSU is two territories away from claiming THIS region? We could be looking at Buckey operating at 400%(!!??)
  • Southeast: It appears OSU's bunk buddy GT has dispatched Florida. RIP Gators.
  • Southwest: Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, and Iowa State are fighting each other in California, the Rockies, and the Sun Belt -- all trying to survive.
  • Northwest: Wisconsin. Anakin. There's a reason they are our only non-OSU target today. 'Nuff said.

Now, can we please liberate Ann Arbor and Philly? I know most of you don't care about the latter, but we have some really good food, and I promise to treat y'all to a Wawa meal once we retake it.

Go Blue and F*CK OSU!

The general in charge needs to be fired or demoted. We should have moved on Ohio State from the beginning; instead, the people in charge were like, "let's align with them" cause BIG TEN!

I have a hunch that soldiers not following the general's orders may be a bigger issue.  I joined the game and Discord a few days ago and just made a quick count of responses on Discord for today's orders -- only about 25% of the team appears to be using Discord and clearly carrying out the orders. I have no idea how many other players are using whataremyorders.

Lots of chatter on Discord about making pacts with other teams.  We've got nearly twice as many players as next largest team - OSU.  Simply making a pact amongst ourselves to carry out the orders might be the most effective pact we can make.

I think someone on Discord said there were ~200 people who used the whataremyorders website, about 90% followed through, and they know who the 10% were who did something else. That's a pretty good # in addition to the discord folks...  hopefully that option helps things pick up steam.

Think it would be helpful if there were more transparency on the discord with a breakdown of the website orders vs. the discord ones just in case there are lurkers/rogues / people who think they "know better" since more info could help inform better strategy for them, assuming they aren't going to take orders either place.

I lurk the discord chat groups but just to figure out what I'm doing. I would NOT equate participation with reading on there.

. I feel like we're being too passive against osu and wisconsin.  I feel like we're hammering away at territories ATM owns so we can get pushed out of the regions we're in. I don't really agree with the general strategy here. And since we have wisconsin and OSU between us and ATM, we should get back our territories by pushing wisconsin and osu out and worry about ATM when future survival is guaranteed. We should not be fighting on 8 fronts because we're concerned about an enemy a dozen turns from now.

I don't think we've been passive against Wisconsin. We've been after them for several turns, but we have had ridiculously bad RNG luck. Night after night, they keep winning territories in Canada and the Pacific Northwest with like a 20-25% chance of victory. There were three of those yesterday.

We did ignore what OSU was doing in eastern Canada for a while, and that cost us a bit.

Maybe not requiring people who want to participate to have/use Discord causing them to go rogue until week 3... they had the orders website last year, no reason not to use it this year.

That blew it from the beginning, could've had multiple regions and dominated.

1. The general has done a great job rallying troops and posting - give them huge props for organization. Also, I have no idea how the discord works but they got that orders website up which is exactly what I needed and huge props for that too.

2. Strategically, some constructive criticism probably is helpful. We haven't prioritized using our enormous star advantage to lock down full territories (we didn't prioritize this nearly early at all, which was a significant strategic error). We to keep trying to spread ourselves thin with lesser priorities, messing with TAMU, Wisco, OSU, etc. If we let TAMU get strong, they will go after OSU as the next closest strong opponent. They're natural bordering enemies. By trying to disrupt them both at the same time, we have failed to solidify our own base, leaving us exposed.

The adjustment they're making now is late, but is the right one. Ignore TAMU, let's use our star advantage to lock down our own territories, and attack our nearest geographical competitor - OSU. If we play the game they way its meant to be played we'll be on top within 4 turns, have 2 territories, and be unstoppable.

Locking down our territories is good in theory, but much harder in practice.

This isn't like real war where you maintain a solid front and push forward. Because of RNG, Wisconsin's shotgun approach keeps resulting in them grabbing chunks of land every round. And you can put a bunch more stars in a given territory, but it's never guaranteed.

It was the same thing in the last 2 seasons -- we always have the biggest numbers, but RNG and diplomacy are key drivers of the end result.

Yeah locking down territories would require like 75% of users to click defend. I don’t see who did what, but I’m guessing like nearly all of the rouge force is clicking to attack an OSU territory, cause that’s “more fun”.

as to going after both A&M and OSU, Michigan has to prevent any team from controlling a territory cause territories are OP. No other teams in the game seemed to care about A&M getting 3 territories until Michigan attacked them.

what would Bo do

February 17th, 2023 at 2:04 PM ^

Underperforming RNG 3 straight nights, combined with OSU's incredible +2.3 sigma roll two nights ago is the biggest difference between us at the moment.  We've missed region bonuses the last few nights because we've lost a territory we've had an 80+% chance of winning.  At some point, our luck will turn, we just need to do everything in our power to stop OSU from accumulating region bonuses in the interim.

4th phase

February 17th, 2023 at 2:13 PM ^

The biggest issue is that OSU's region is safe from Michigan. So it relies on Tenn and GT to do something about it. And they probably won't, because my wild guess is that those 3 have decided to divide up the regions on the east coast in a treaty. Tenn gets west appalachia, osu gets east appalachia, and GT gets carolinas.

Discord is best, whataremyorders is next, then just going by territories listed in these posts, and finally just doing whatever you want.

At the end of the day - anything is better than nothing.  If you choose one of the "formal" methods, stick with it so that people can plan on having you in their numbers.

Discord's great to be able to engage with the rest of the Wolverines while you make your move.

The orders site is great for quick "I want to do my part but I don't want to make it my entire life" folks.

There are pros and cons to both, and the orders that are assigned to each are more or less distinct.  If you want to be social, join the Discord and come have fun with the rest of us over there!  If you're just looking to lend your support but don't have a lot of time, use the site!

There is a good chance that we're going to be asking folks on Discord to start using the site in the near future, since we're relatively happy with how it's been performing the last few nights.  But please don't take that as an indication that you shouldn't join our Discord!

When i look at this map, i am compelled to think that you all should go after and completely eliminate Wisconsin first, then turn all your attention towards OSU after Wiscy is eliminated.

pz

February 17th, 2023 at 2:38 PM ^

If you want to do that, maybe just defend Dallas or Sinaloa to prevent them from getting region bonuses in Texas or Mexico? If there aren't many others attacking down there, might be a wasted turn otherwise...

bet you $ there is one or more spies in the discord.  no other explanation for a team with huge numbers advantage who night-after-night is getting it's proverbial head handed to it.  ain't no 'RNG' bad luck, we've got a mole!

i have no idea how to play.  i tried it years ago.  no good.  tried this year and got some message about there was already an account under my email.  i freely admit i'm fred flintstone as it relates to computers and that is a road block i won't be able to surmount.  it'll have to be some other brave soul.  like you, pz, like you.

Last night Wisky won 5 territories with the following odds in each:

35%
28%
28%
22%
20%
twinning all those had a 0.12% not only that, they won 7 out of 22 where they were underdogs. That’s expected. The lucky parts is the particular territories they won. If you bothered to do the stats there are over 170k combinations of 7 out of 22. Their combination was certainly better than over 120k other possible combinations. That’s what you call a lucky roll.

Welp. The game is a giant clusterfuck right now. On tonight's roll, every team had bots making moves for them. OSU had the most bots but we had a bunch also.

The game mods are discussing whether to re-do the roll because so many players were bots. For now, nobody is allowed to make any moves and the game is paused.

Why would anyone go to the trouble of creating bots to make moves in College Football Risk, ffs.

I was all over North East Philly this morning, no OSU militia in sight. They must have ran with their tail between their legs when the Philly started showing in the Philly wolverines.
