CC: Tom Herman

Submitted by Magga Saraivah on

As an old guy (see my avatar), I understand better than some of you young whipper snappers that we need a fresh young mind.  If we can't get a Harbaugh, why not consider OSU OC Tom Herman:

Top 10 reasons:

10) His name sounds like Tom Harmon (divine intervention ?)

9) He is a registered MENSA

8) He knows Urban Meyer's philosophies inside and out

7) He would trigger another 10-year War ala Woody-Bo

6) It would irk OSU to no end to lose him to us. We hurt OSU and help ourselves in one shot.

5) He grew up in Ohio and has strong recruiting ties there.

4) He coached at multiple Texas schools (more recruiting ties)

3) He runs a modern day spread offense which can be adapted. The dumbest thing people think is that you cant run power out of a spread.

2) He never answers a question with "Well...you know", see Item 9 above.

1) He isn't Brady Hoke

My OSU friend loves what the offense has done for Barrett,m and the on field results can't be denied. Have to excuse the Va Tech game because they were still learning what Barrett could do.

There are multiple good HC candidates who have been HCs and successful ones out there.  A few of these make $2.3-$3.4M range.  We can pay Big Bert / Butch Jones ($5.3Mish) money and make then top 5 paid in the nation and get them from their schools.

Guys like this or completely hit or miss.  The halo effect is totally randon - they may be a creation of their HC or not.  We cant take that chance IMO.  Maybe 4 years ago we could - not anymore.  If the next coach is wrong we are 12 years into a rebuild.

Can someone make a list for me of HIGHLY successful head coaches who had not 1 ounce of HC experience in their life before their success at a top 15 program?  That list for me right now is Bob Stoops and Mike Gundy.  And I am stretching that because OK State sure wasn't a top 15 program when Gundy was hired.

Next best would be Bo P who averages 4 losses a year - which in Michigan terms would be nirvana.  But those are the top 2 with a lot of misses along the way.   Maybe I am missing another 5.

Mark Richt and Charlie Strong have done a nice job too.

Would you rather go the MAC head coach route? Lots of misses each way.

I just want the best guy - good morals, high IQ, fierce competitor, good recruiter, record of success with a system that makes sense for Michgan - and don't care about if he was a HC or not.

a Harbaugh.  Mullen is most likely going to UF next season.  We're not plucking Gundy or Malzahn.  Bob Stoops is a very remote possibility.

Herman or equivilant coordinator (preferrably OC) would be our best option.  Herman might be gettable for the right $$.  The first key is Brandon being gone.  Next is an AD who doesn't want the spotlight, and then making sure the next coach wants to be here and has a plan for success that involves headsets and no clapping AND a real S & C program.

We have to get this one right because if we don't we become Purdue, Kansas or worse, if there is such a thing.

If there was a Charlie Strong or Kevin Sumlin out there for 2015, that would be the way to go. But since it doesn't look like there is, I think M really ought to look at NFL guys. Schiano is available, and a number of coordinators look like promising options (Quinn, Del Rio, McDaniels). Herman is an interesting candidate but I wouldn't want him if any of the NFL guys are interested.

No way Tom Herman accepts the HC job at Michigan. His roots are planted in Texas and he will more than likely end up at SMU, now that June Jones resigned a couple of weeks ago.

IMHO - Michigan NEEDS Jim Harbaugh. They should do whatever it takes to get him and right now it looks like this season is his last in SF. Only issue I have with Harbaugh is that no one seems to like the guy...not his players, not his bosses, not opposing coaches (see Pete Carroll flare-up on YouTube). That would be my only concern if I were a Michigan administrator. But he can flat out coach and his immediate turn-around job at Stanford was amazing.

Urban made Tom sign up for at least 2 years if he was going to be his OC. Tom stuck around this year because he wanted to finish what he started with Braxton. I don't know if Braxton will actually come back next year or not, I'm still skeptical. But I'm even more doubtful Herman sticks around, even if Braxton does.

Several teams have made a run at Herman in the off seasons. I think he probably needs to go be a HC somewhere a bit smaller first, then work his way to the Power 5 level. You might be able to get him cheap because he has no HC experience.

I'd be very scared of Michigan being run by Tom Herman because I think he's going to be a great HC. I see what he continues to do with our offense and he has great connections in Texas that has gotten us some great Texas recruits, including JT Barrett. I do wonder how much of our offensive improvement is do to the Co-OC Warriner, but I know Herman is the QB coach and Braxton and JT have both improved greatly under him.
