CC: Sam Webb says Addazio and Schiano are rising up the board

Submitted by pfholland on

Sam Webb is stating that Greg Schiano is, "generating the majority of buzz," and the BC's Steve Addazio's name is, "being mentioned more and more in Ann Arbor."  Apparently Addazio's style of play and BC academics are the primary reasons.

As an aside, Sam has made the decision to be the sole voice on coaching search updates over at the Michigan Scout premium board, effectively censoring Tom Beaver.  Sam and Tom's information hasn't been agreeing (Tom has been far more optimistic on Harbaugh) but until now both viewpoints were presented.  No more.  I would typically never post premium content elsewhere (and never have before), but after this move along with Sam's locking of the thread where subscribers were crticizing his decision he can go fuck himself.

Don't worry too much, You likely have as much inside info as Sam Webb. Remember the week before Brandon was fired Webb was still saying Brandon would survive. With recruiting, he gets the goods, with coaching and AD, he has been lost. And I do know he had Hoke getting fired an hour before Hoke got fired, but everyone knew that was happening

It is quite funny to read all of these posts bashing Sam over the Brandon stuff when it is obvious only bits and pieces of his reporting only make it here. He always said that the chances of Home and or Brandon surviving are quite slim, but they did have some power brokers backing them. He said when Ross made his comments in the WSJ that would probably be the death nail. And as soon as the clock struck zero on the Maryland game that would probably do it for Hoke. It isn't fair to Sam when AA torch & pitchfork only brings part of his reporting over.

I'm watching GaTech-FSU, and a guy just converted a 4th & 1, they said he'd NEVER had a negative yard run...why don't we ever mention Paul Johnson? It didn't take him all that long to get his system installed at GT as I recall. Or am I wrong? Top notch DC, he had Megatron, so he'll throw if he's got players. Discuss...

But he's 57, and just signed an extension through 2020 with Georgia Tech.

If that's the offense that impresses you, the guy you'd want to look at is Troy Calhoun at the Air Force Academy.

He both played in and coached in the NFL (OC for the Texans) so he has that on his resume, he's running an offense similar to GT at the AFA but can implement more pro style elements if/when needed or personnel skillsets demand it.

And he's 48, makes a little over $1 million/year, and his deal is up after next season.

Imagine that offense, with Shane Morris, Derrick Green, Ty Isaac, and DeVeon Smith/Drake Johnson in the backfield...

coached at Rutgers I mean Rutgers for god sakes and he won games there a lot of college coaches fail in the NFL that negative experience could benefit him as a coach moving forward I'll take him over that freaking hack Les Miles the rest of you guys want

He had one good year and a few above average years. Yes it was Rutgers but he never able to make the leap. I think at his peak in 2006(?) he still finished 2nd or 3rd in the big east. His resume isn't all that different from Hoke 4 yrs ago. If the best we can do is hire a slightly above middling coach, what is the point?

Go look at his record at Rutgers. You are not familiar with it at all if you can post what you did. Schiano is well down my list but it is a simple fact that he did a good job at Rutgers and that isn't debateable. Look at their record before and after he was there. He did fairly well in NEW JERSEY and developed many NFL players.

Here is his record the 11-2 year and after:

2006 Rutgers 11–2 5–2 T–2nd W Texas 12 12
2007 Rutgers 8–5 3–4 T–5th W International
2008 Rutgers 8–5 5–2 T–2nd W Papajohns.com
2009 Rutgers 9–4 3–4 T–4th W St. Petersburg
2010 Rutgers 4–8 1–6 8th
2011 Rutgers 9–4 4–3 T–4th W Pinstripe

It is simply not true that he had 'one good year and that his record after '06 is terrible. This record was accmplished at one of the worst possible places to coach too.

Again, I want several others before him. But this dismissal by many of his Rutgers job is simply wrong, and disagreed with by most in the coaching profession. there is a reason he was a hot candidate for other jobs as well as the NFL--because he did a good job at Rutgers.

a good job at rutgers which means what exactly? How hard is it to get to 8 or 9 wins when you are playing 3 or for terrible nonconference teams and then the big east. To me that is no more impressive then the 2 rebuilding jobs Hoke did before he got here. Then he got chance in the pros and was a complete disaster. Yes some good coaches fail in the pros but noot the way Schiano failed..there is no good comparrison for what he did

Look at Rutgers before him--awful, invisible. BSU before Hoke was mediocre, and stayed that way with one great year mixed in.Rutgers went from truly awful to good during his time. And doing in in New Jersey, recruiting players to a school with no natural advantages was a WAY more impressive job than what Hoke did, which IMO barely qualifies as improvement. I won't argue with you about his flame out in the pros, (though I disagree) I do agree it was awful.

I read the chart and still stand by my statement that he one good year and a bunch of above avg years. Even including 06, he finished 2nd in the Big East twice Nd had 3 or more conference losses four times. That is middling at best.

I don't get the Schiano hatred either. He was a good coach at a disaster of school. Also, everyone brings up Mullen's record as OC at Florida under Urban but no one brings up Schiano's record as the DC at Miami(YTM) for 2 seasons(99-00). Those defenses that he coordinated were filthy! The 99 defense was 13th nationally and the 00 defense was 5th nationally. He helped recruit and develop Ed Reed, Ray Lewis, Sean Taylor, etc. Why doesn't anyone mention this about him?

from being a dumpster fire. I'd go say far as to say it was a pretty good job and that's why he stayed. They are in a good position for recruiting and had several pretty good years in a row. What was Schiano able to achieve from that? Not much on the field. If he had left after 2006 or 2007 and his replacement compiled that record, he'd be considered a failed hire.

If I'm considering him for a job, I'd want to know why those last five years at Rutgers were so mediocre. Mediocre in the Big East = terrible resume. I'm not hiring anyone based mainly on what they did a decade ago.

Much cheaper, we'd keep Mattison, possibly guys like Funchess and the recruits...other than that, it's basically the same thing. Yeah. If the field of prospective coaches meant Schiano was ever that high up on the list, I'd definitely keep Hoke another year.

Get Jim Harbaugh

December 6th, 2014 at 9:42 PM ^

Yup, like the tweet about Lloyd Carr. The way his tweet sounded, you'd think that Carr was against Harbaugh, but in fact Lloyd said that Jim is his first choice to be the new coach. This is why I hate those stupid pay for information sites and will never get an account with them. I still don't understand why people pay for that shit.

Sometimes when I hear things about candidates "generating buzz" or names "being mentioned" etc I seriously wonder what that even means.  AFAIK there is one man making this decision.  How does stuff like that even happen when that is the case?
