He followed Kelly at CMU and Cinncy. Didn't really spend enough time at either place to establish his own program. If you're a good coach that concern probably doesn't carry as much weight in the evaluation process. It appears he's starting to build something at Tennessee but the jury's still out in my opinion. Unfortunately, we don't have time on our side to see how things develop for him there. He's definitely not a can't miss, slam dunk hire, but won't be a horrible hire. Belongs on a short list for sure.

I would switch 3 and 4 but very solid
October 27th, 2014 at 10:33 PM ^
I agree 100%. Flip Les & Mullen and that list is solid as hell. But I'd take any of them over the clown show we have to endure today.
October 28th, 2014 at 3:31 PM ^
Spot on.
October 28th, 2014 at 9:08 AM ^
As the above 2 commenters mentioned - switch 3 and 4.
I'd also swap out Jim McElwain for Gary Pinkel too. I know he had a DUI issue a few years ago, but I think he's paid his dues. He's built two programs from the bottom up. I think he could do a great job at Michigan.
October 29th, 2014 at 6:22 PM ^
Pinkel is 62 goddamn years old

I think the Gary Patterson possbility is interesting

But, can J Ira and Nicki afford it?
October 28th, 2014 at 12:07 AM ^
It's an attempt to lowball him. He could likely pull down $7M in the NFL. John Harbaugh is already making that much.
October 28th, 2014 at 4:53 AM ^
5 million aint going to cut it for harbaugh...I feel you need to start at 7 for this tire fire
October 28th, 2014 at 10:59 AM ^
Remember back when the Tigers were awful and they had to really overpay guys like Pudge to come here? That's just about where Michigan is at these days. If they want Harbaugh -- a guy that has a track record of turning things around at a similar school -- then just open up the checkbook, appeal to his ego, and agree to overpay him and make him the highest paid coach in CFB. Saban makes $7.3M. Offer Harbaugh $7.31.
At the end of the day, its only $2m/yr difference and if the team gets rolling again, that will more than pay for itself.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:14 PM ^
In that order.

The amount of schandenfreude from a Tressel hire would be stunning to behold. However, he has a show-cause penalty against him ATM, which would probably make it unlikely (as if it wasn't monstrously unlikely as is)
October 27th, 2014 at 11:22 PM ^
He misses the rest of the season. We are obviously not going to a bowl game, so that issue resolves itself. All in all, if we hire Tressel today, he would be ready to coach in the spring. Problem solved.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:22 PM ^
Notwithstanding all the other issues with Tressel he is not allowed to coach next year.
October 27th, 2014 at 11:25 PM ^
He just misses some games and a bowl. Might as well hire him now because we're already missing those games as well as the bowl, already.
October 28th, 2014 at 12:34 AM ^
Tressel's penalty ends on 12/17/16. That's two regular seasons after 2014.

"Jim Tressel – The former head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Tressel was forced to resign three months before the start of the 2011 season for lying to the NCAA about student athletes receiving tattoos and cash for signed memorabilia. According to the NCAA, he had four chances to tell the truth and failed to do so. For this, he was given a five-year show-cause penalty (until December 19, 2016). If he gets another head coaching job before then, he will have to sit out the first five games of the first regular season of his return, as well as any postseason games (including conference championship games and bowl games).[2] "
October 28th, 2014 at 1:02 AM ^
"Of great concern to the committee was the fact that the former head coach became aware of these violations and decided not to report the violations..."
I want to win, but I wouldn't want to win with this guy. He cheated and he was arrogant about it. Fucking hypocrite, and it's not because he was the Governor of Ohio.
October 28th, 2014 at 8:54 AM ^
Chances are we will not win with Jim Tressel. If our current trend continues, we will not win at all. At least you can feel good about it.

I think those 4 names are considered a home run by the general fan base. If we get someone less well known, there will be unease and lackluster support from many. I think we need a big name. Open that check book wide.
I would take John Harbaugh over Jim, but I don't see it happening. I get a sinking feeling that we are gonna be calling Greg Schiano our new coach, and that does not inspire confidence for me. If we go lower than Miles who is 3rd or 4th on most lists, it shows the disconnect between what we think we are and what the rest of the country thinks we are.
Of course, I want a new AD before anything. Hoke we can keep till the last game, but if we don't move on Brandon and get an experienced and highly liked AD soon, our chances of a home run hire are fantasy.
October 28th, 2014 at 11:03 AM ^
No John. He has too many letters in his first name. We're sticking to three letters or less for the next coach, and ideally two letters. Gary, Lloyd, Rich, and Brady -- TOO MANY LETTERS. Bo just needed two letters in his name. Real Michigan Men don't fuck around with extra letters.
October 27th, 2014 at 10:20 PM ^
I don't believe this program can take the risk on an unproven coordinator who has zero HC experience. One more wrong hire and we lose a generation ala Notre Dame. So with that said:
- Jim Harbaugh
- Gary Patterson
- Todd Graham
- Dan Mullen
- Kyle Whittingham
- Les Miles
- Wildcard - pending the next 4 weeks - Mark Stoops. If he makes a game of it with Georgia and wins 2 of his last 4, he would move up to 5.
Don't think John H is "realistic".
October 28th, 2014 at 11:33 AM ^
is probably not realistic, but he'd be my #1 choice.
