CC: Is Gus Malzahn the Mystery Candidate?

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on
If what Cowherd is saying is correct, Gus Malzahn makes a lot of sense. No one, outside of random names being thrown around (which is a favorite hobby of us fine folk here at mgoblog), has brought up Malzahn. Cowherd seems to be quite fond of Malzahn, and has even gone so far as to say he would end the Saban dynasty. I could make a logical argument that Cowherd could be connected to those around Malzahn; especially his agent, given how much positive publicity Cowherd gives freely. Malzahn has a low buyout, and would essentially be a cure-all for the Michigan offense.

Cowherd's sources are usually west coast so look towards there or Stoops...

Cowherd broke the Sark to USC story and Sark apparently shares an agent with ..... Jim Mora!

Just my 2 cents of speculation.

Cowherd is reporting a rumor to generate interest in his crappy but catchy (the 674 threads on his comments are proof of that) show.

That said, I do believe one or more premier candidates will be added to our current list:

  • Bob Stoops
  • Mark Richt
  • Jim Mora Jr. (I think this is the guy, partly because Foley flew to LA after he was in Colorado...who else would he have been talking to?)

We'll see...

Despite what many on this board think, UCLA is a step below Michigan.

Michigan is one of the best jobs in the country, and UCLA isn't even the best job in LA (that would be USC).  Also, Michigan is a much easier path to the CoFoPo than any school in the PAC-12 south, which may be the 2nd-best conference in football.  And maybe he just doesn't see eye-to-eye with the UCLA brass.

I think his style of coaching is also better-suited to the B1G.

All that said, I have no idea who Cowherd was talking about, just guesses.

State schools in Cali are very limited in what they are able to pay coaches, coordinators, and assistants. The previous coach at UCLA made mention of this on Sirius because he had to compete against USC which has basically bottomless pockets. If this is all true JMJr may be looking for greener pastures for him and his staff ala Bielema or he's going to be repeatedly poached for assistants. I think JMJr is only pulling in ~2m/yr currently. My concern would be as someone other than Harbaugh(s) or Miles would he be welcomed with open arms?

Uncles's little sister's kindergarten teacher's brother's barber cuts Cowherd's hair and apparently it's Dantonio who's coming to Ann Arbor.

Malzahn has one of the four or five jobs that is good enough to make me think he wouldn't jump.  He would definitely satisfy both the modern offense crowd and the neanderthal crowd.  I would be stunned if Michigan could pry him away from Auburn.  I would also be exceedingly happy.

Shane Morris would probably be the clear favorite to start next year. I don't know a lot about Malzone or Speight but I don't believe either are nearly as mobile as Morris. Shane would probably run his system best. At least at this point.

The thread title is quite clear, if you think it's "wasting peoples' time" why are you reading and commenting on it?

Maybe we disagree but I'm all about baseless speculation and fantasizing at this point.

Baseless speculation is fine, which is why we already have 5 threads devoted to this topic.  If someone starts a new thread, it should contain new information. This is just another post that is doing the exactly same thing as the 600 or so posts that were made in the previous threads.

Auburn did finish 4th in the SEC West behind Bama and the two MS schools. LSU was a little down this year, but will be better next year. A&M's QB's will have a season of experience and another off season of development. Not to mention Arkansas isn't going to be an easy victory. That would be enough motivation to want to go north.

Sure, Bama is always going to be great but every great school has a great rival. I'm looking at Arkansas, Ole Miss and MSU and saying

  1. Ole Miss is going to be buried in sanctions within 5-10 years and they can't sustain that anyway and
  2. MSU can't sustain that and Mullen is out the door soon anyway
  3. Arkansas is Arkansas and never has sustained success

It's challenging, but I doubt Malzahn feels intimidated

I personally called every coach that has been mentioned in these threads today and every one of them said they were not a candidate for the Michigan job. I guess we need to come up with some new names.

that we would contact Malzahn for sure.  I would also bet that he would see the limitations that coaching at a school which cares about academics presents.  He'll then say he is not interested.
