CC and impact on assistants

Submitted by mi93 on

Is it possible that given Mattison's relationship with John Harbaugh, known recruiting prowess, etc., the next HC (esp. if it's Jim) would keep Mattison?  Would you want to keep him?

Same goes for Nussmeier.  Have we seen enough of Nuss to know what he's truly capable of building given the talent and if able to reshape the O assistants?

My (distant) take is that both Coordinators are keepers (based on track record, not just this year) but the rest of the staff needs some shaking up and the leadership at the top has to be more demanding.  I'm interested in what any insiders may be hearing / thinking.  Would you all clean house?

Personally, I say clean house. I'm sure Nussmeier will find success elsewhere. Mattison, while still a solid coach, I think is starting to show signs of aging out of coaching.

More than anything, the program has gotten a kind of institutional rot to it at the moment. I say use the opportunity of having both a new AD and new HC to really give the culture around the football program something of a jolt. And hopefully the past 7 years will have taught the community around the program not to attack the new HC the way they did RR when he tried to change the culture.

and recruiting purposes, I could see a couple of the assitstants being retained under a new coach. Whether Mattison, who has family coaching ties to the Harbaughs, both Jack and John, I'm not sure whether he'd stay on or not, given his relationship with Hoke. I have no opinion on Nussmier whose work this season as a play-caller has not made me a strong supporter of his coaching ability.

However, because of all the change this program has faced over recent times, I think there needs to be some connection to current staff going forward. The retention of any coaches would obviously depend on their ability to connect with a new coach and whether their background and personality matches both philosophy and vision.

In theory, I can see the benefit of retaining some assistants. But outside of Roy Manning (provided he no longer be allowed to coach DBs), I'm not sure who else I'd want to stick around. No position group on the offensive side of the ball has looked good this season (otherwise, Hecklinski would be my first choice). The only position group on defense that I'd be interested in would be LB, but that's Mattison's domain, and I think both coordinators need to go.

Suppose the planets do align, and the OTC comes to Michigan, how likely is it that he can convince his NFL coordinators to follow? Harbaugh may or may not be long for the NFL, but what about his assistants? Moreover, how much does Michigan need the DC, OC and HC as a package deal?

I'd clean house, get rid of everybody. The defense is not as bad as the offense but there close. Giving up big plays not getting turnovers giving up over a hundred yards rushing to App st. back, Minnesota, Michigan St. probably everyone else. Made Gary Novalook like Tom Brady fergodsakes. Everyone out!

I guess that's obvious, but there isn't going to be any insider info at this stage. It's generally helpful to keep someone from the previous staff. Manning is the only likely choice for that role. I don't get the Nussmeier love. What's the most impressive thing he's done here? It sure isn't developing Shane Morris or fixing Gardner's problems. Maybe the new coach will talk to him, more likely he'll have his own guy in mind. I like Mattison, but a coach near the end of his career is unlikely to appeal to someone taking over, John Harbaugh excepted.

Needs to do whatever he thinks needs to be done. In theory one of the reasons we hire the guy is that he knows how to put together a winning staff. Pressuring him to keep guys due to their attachment to the program will start things off on the wrong foot

im not sure how well Jim harbaughs relationship is with his current staff but my guess would be that harbaugh will clean house. Maybe keep one assistant but thats about it. i would bring in wheatley on this staff just saying

Until last year. The defense gives up too many rushing yards, the secondary still gives up big pass plays and DL never generates a pass rush.  The linebackers are the only ones who play decent on the defense!

Nuss has been a big disappointment. I actually like Borge's play calling better. Never seen the offense this boring in my entire life of watching Michigan football!

Mattison is overrated and continues to get a pass around here. He needs to go. I'm not convinced Nuss is bad his recent track record is good but I wouldn't be opposed depending on his replacement.

Michigan has shown that it's the place for coordinator and coaches come to underperform. Don't know why that is but once many of these coaches leave, they do well in other places. Maybe they buried radioactive waste under A2 and the city is keeping it quiet which would explain they piss poor results (sans 2011) over a 7 year stretch.

that emerge when stakeholder pressure gets in the way of coaching choices. I don't know how much pressure there was on RR or Hoke to keep Jackson as RB's coach, since he was the only holdover to survive in continuous employ since Lloyd Carr retired. I thinking keeping a coaching contact for the present roster whom a new coach would be able to consult on certain issues makes sense. But obviously that would depend on the coach and what he wants to do, and whether there is a good personality and recruiting fit, and that guy didn't want to leave.

Having said that, I am all for giving the HC complete autonomy and authority to hire the people he needs to get the job done.

I think mattison is done, nussmeier I have said for a couple weeks that even if home is retained, he is leAving. Mattison would be nice for 1 year as a recruiter or just so we don't see kids leave but I haven't been impressed with him the past two years, he is given too many passes IMO.

Give the new HC free reign to assess talent and pick his own people.

I think Manning is great for recruiting and I still believe in Nuss, but the new coach should be free to choose.

I'm with the clean house crowd. Mattison has been solid, but new blood may be needed to get the D one step closer to championship material. The offense has been terrible under Nuss, so no need to keep him around.

Geezuz.... They need to get rid of Nussmeier.  He has been horrible.   "Can" the OL, WR, RB, LB, DL, DB and DC.....cut them all loose.  Mattison is overrated.

I don't think Mattison would come back even if offered. The only reason he came back was because of Hoke. With Hoke being shown the door, he'll either follow him to his next gig or retire. I would like to have someone from the south as a coordinator. That might help recruiting in SEC country. Someone who the kids can relate to. Keep manning as the LB coach maybe.

If its Harbaugh, I dont expect anyone to be retained. He's an egomaniac, in a good way. Almost any other coach might opt to keep one. Get an insight into the team, who is good at what, who works hard, etc. The only option seems to be Manning.
