CB George Johnson III to the transfer portal
Backup cornerback George Johnson III announced on Twitter that he's entering the transfer portal (LINK).
There was talk from some of the receivers that he was the toughest cornerback to shake in the off-season, but obviously that didn't translate to the game field. He seems like a really good kid, but the writing was on the wall.

The guys who have entered the transfer portal so far are guys who would have transferred in just about any year. If you've been around for about three years and can barely get on the field, this is what happens.

Transfers are necessary to get to 85 scholarships with the recruiting class we brought in, and I'm assuming the staff was aware of all of these so far. Every transfer that happens that isn't a contributor or high ranked young player with potential should be taken as a sigh of relief.

Agree. We all knew there would be quite a few departures. Still a bummer. I thought he was going to be a major contributor at some point in his career.

Can’t have it both ways. I’m not calling you out personally, just stating the facts. Every year people get excited about the recruiting class and say “it’ll work itself out” when we are 10 or 12 players over the limit. It does work itself out, guys who aren’t seeing the field transfer for more playing time. We can’t be “disappointed”. Now if Corum or someone like that is hitting the portal, that’s cause for disappointment.

You are not the emotional police. People can be both excited for recruiting and disappointed by transfers.

Considering the free COVID year, it's totally possible some of these kids hitting the portal after three seasons are leaving with a UM degree & three years of eligibility remaining. Which is mos def a win-win.

Good luck to him. It looks like we have some good players coming in at DB this year. It still always stinks to see a player leave.
