The Catch - 1991 Michigan Vs ND

Submitted by BoFan on

In honor of the rivalry it’s time to relive Desmond’s catch.  This has to be the greatest play of all time in the series.  You have to love what Elvis and Desmond did here.  Plus we have to thank Coach Mo for the memories by making such a gutsy call on fourth and 1.

Greatest play of all time? It was an iconic Desmond-for-Heisman play for sure and out-of-character for Michigan on a 4th-and-one, but they were already up 17-14.

How 'bout Remy Hamilton in 1994? Denard (to Gallon, then) to Roundtree in 2011? Those were game-winning plays and pretty spectacular.

I was at both the 91 and 94 games and definitely would vote for The Catch as being more iconic (though both games were amazing). The thing that sucked about both seasons was the following week (FSU in 91, Colorado in 94) was a real buzz kill, albeit in different ways.

The way we took great teams into the ND game every year for what seemed like forever and lost, the way ND inevitably had a drive in them at the end of the game, and the way Michigan was always going to run the football on a desperate 4th-and-1...

It was shocking. And amazing. And wonderful.

The UTL comeback was a better game, but this was a better play.

I still remember this play like it was yesterday. I had my seat looking straight down the end zone line and I remember how poerfectly horizontal Desmond was when he made that catch. It was like time slow down so that I can soak up all the amazingness. What a play.

Soooo.... my dad recorded this game and I found the tape.  Decided to watch it and started playing the catch over and over again.  Somehow I accidentally hit the record button during “the catch” and recorded over that exact moment.  When I realized what I had done, I started shaking, put the tape away, and never said anything to my dad.  Still hope he doesn’t find out?

I got married that day....We had to wait until the end of the game until we could walk down the aisle. Still saw lots of people with transistor radios in their ears. Still how I remember our anniversary....

Anybody who doesn’t understand what a great coach Gary Moeller was, and what a badass he was as an OC, needs to watch the video with the amazing, historic headset audio.

If you’ve never heard it before, you might not believe your ears.

Kudos to the OP.
