BYU Dirty? Utah player thinks so.

Is BYU dirty? According to Utah DT Viliseni Fauonuku, they are.

At an event for the upcoming Las Vegas Bowl, the Utah player called the opposing team dirty for their tendency to add extracurricular activity to plays. "BYU, y'all are a good team," he said, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. "But you're a dirty team. Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'."

This destroys any image you might have had about BYU being a school with a very conservative image that sends students on two year LDS missions.

The article goes on to mention that Fauonuku was arrested as a 16 yr old for holding up two people at gunpoint. All things considered, I will take my chances with a team that punches people in a game and not one where its players are charged with aggravated robbery.

I'm posting this because both teams were common opponents this year. The teams usually play each other in a game called the Holy War but did not play yet and are meeting for the first time in a bowl and not the regular season. Maybe it should be called the Dirty War? (apologies to my Argentinian friends)

FWIW, I was at the BYU game and didn't see anything that led me to believe they were anything but inept.

I seem to recall quite a bit of discussion before we played them that said that BYU plays dirty.

I agree, it didn't seem to be too bad when we played, but then going down 31-0 by halftime will tend to take the fight out of you.

BYU/Utah rivalry is pretty vicious right now. Is BYU dirty? Maybe. Has there been a lot that's happened in the past couple of years where BYU players could've taken the higher road? Sure. Does it happen lots of places? Sure. Does that excuse it? No. Will fans of rival schools like Utah make a bigger deal of it than should be made? Yup. Is it easier to jump on the religious school when they fail to live up to their values? Obviously. That's always more fun. Are these self-answered questions getting annoying. Yup.

FYI I grew up in Michigan and have been a lifelong Michigan fan. Went to BYU for school so I now root for both schools.

Go Blue!

It's been more than the past couple years... The "BYU players are dirty/racist" comments have been coming from other teams for decades. I first remember hearing the comments in the early 1980s. As the anecdotes continued through the 80s and 90s I simply accepted that there must be some truth to it.

The past couple years have provided some "striking" examples, but it has been a thing for a long time.

Where you can get suspended for having pre-marital sex because of their terrible "code of conduct" yet punching someone in the stones is not a suspension (at least I don't think he was suspended).

GA Tech players said after the BYU series in 2012 and 2013 that, by far, they were the dirtiest team they played over that time.

In the Michigan game this year, which I was fortunate enough to attend, they did try their post-whistle garbage early in the game, but they were being flagged for it.  I remember a late hit out of bounds early in the game that was flagged on BYU, and I specifically remember during a timeout that an official specifically went to Kai Nacua and had a discussion with him for several minutes after that late hit and a couple other borderline shoving incidents from the BYU players.  After that, and after their heads were getting beat in, BYU quit that nonsense.  But every game is a new day for them to bring that crap back out.

I think this will be an awesome bowl game to watch. Bravo, Las Vegas Bowl. The Fiesta Bowl would have had a field day with a Michigan / Notre Dame Fiesta Bowl if we would have beaten Ohio State.

There was much concern here over BYU's dirty ways going into our game with them.  But then...31-0 happened.  And all was forgotten.

If I could bottle the feeling after that game, I would have.  There's nothing better than seeing your team play lightyears better against an opponent than what you actually expected.

has crazy Polynesians and Mormon golden boys (going to BYU in itself is like a big deal for middle-class LDS types and going to BYU to play football is the cherry on top)..of course they're going to be on the chippy side.
